“Lovely Devon thatched hideway with boutique rooms.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 May 2014

This hotel suffered a major fire a few years ago and has recently been completely rebuilt to a very high standard. It is situated in the middle of Devon and is a great base to explore this wonderful County. The town of Hatherleigh is fairly quaint, some would say a bit scruffy, but it is worth visiting particularly on a market day.
The George Hotel has some lovely rooms which are very well and stylishly fitted out and fully deserve the description of boutique rooms. The bar and restaurant areas are a little more basic, but the whole establishment is kept very clean indeed. All the staff were very nice people and keen to provide excellent service.
We were on a two night B&B package (booked direct with The George) with dinner included on the second night at just £129 for the two of us which was something of a bargain.
The menu choice was fairly limited and was really only of a basic pub standard, but the prices were reasonable as were the wines, and as we were on a super deal we had no real complaint. If we visit again, and we plan to, we will choose their even better value alternative £99 B&B rate for two nights for two people, which even includes a bottle of wine, and eat out in a rather more upmarket restaurant.
For such a nice hotel they really would benefit from employing a really good chef and offering a far more extensive menu even though it will have to cost rather more.

Room Tip: Some premium rooms would be a little better if they have a nicer outlook, but our standard room was...

First things first:
Very friendly and cheerful staff from arrival to departure.
Our rooms were excellent and very clean.
The layout is very pleasant and modern upstairs with the bedroom corridors overlooking the courtyard and downstairs is more olde worlde with character for a pub - a nice blend.
As somewhere to stay a few nights I cant fault it.
I've awarded only three stars because:
I don't feel the menu does the hotel justice. Too many items were battered, crumbed or deep fried. A little attention to the the menu could really elevate the George to a higher level.
Like others, we wandered over to the pub opposite on the first night as we found the menu more appealing.
On the second night a table was reserved for us.
(The village is a little remote if you don't want to drive at night.)
The table wasn't in the dining area, it was very close to the roaring fire where a couple sat in the two armchairs just a few feet away with their two labradors.
The dogs were well behaved but naturally took an interest in the food in very close proximity
I love dogs but not right next to the dinner table.
Lastly, a small point but a strange one.
After ordering a cooked breakfast the next day one of our party, suffering from a heavy cold, had a change of heart. Her husband wandered over to cancel the breakfast but was told "Sorry, it's already plated up." and so it was served to us a minute or so later and wasted.
What a strange policy given that cooked breakfasts can easily be kept warm and served in the next order.
But.... for the price we paid, on a Groupon deal, we enjoyed our stay.

Did not stay at the hotel, but met family here recently for an evening meal in the restaurant as it was conveniently half-way between us. Found the car park round the back thanks to previous reviewers - turn left at the co-op and then right and the sheep roundabout. The refurbished rear of the hotel is easy to find and is a nice entrance to the pleasant interior and the bar.

Restaurant service was generally slow and inattentive throughout the evening e.g. after waiting ages for mains plates to be cleared we than had to ask after another 20 mins or so for the dessert menu.

We did not feel there was a great deal of variety on the menu or specials board unless you like fish or spicy additions to your food. However, what we had in terms of starters and mains were OK if not great. The big disappointment was the desserts - of the 4 desserts we had, 2 had to be returned as being inedible. We complained and were grateful to receive an apology of sorts "desserts are brought in, not homemade" but this is still not a good enough standard in the kitchen. The rock-hard crumble and soggy disgusting pastry on the lemon tart should have been spotted and not sent out to table. We were offered alternatives, but declined, and did have the items removed from our bill and complimentary coffees so staff did do what they can to recover.

maybe we were just unlucky, but will try elsewhere in future.

Stayed 7 to 9 April 2014, The car park is at the back of the hotel and you need to turn at the Co-op shop and turn right at the roundabout with the three men and sheep, go up the slight hill and the hotel car park is ahead to the right. We had a standard room which was pristine, a good size, very clean and well appointed with a good size flat screen TV, the usual tea & coffee making, a reasonable amount of storage. Our room (# 6) overlooked a courtyard, so no view but it was quiet at all times apart from a noisy fan, however this stopped before bedtime. The bathroom was great with a large double ended bath, toiletries replaced daily. Very hot water!
The staff were very friendly and helpful, although when checking in we had a long wait as the only member of staff also had to look after the bar. Breakfast was OK, but lacking in fruit salad and toast was pre-buttered and delivered with the cooked breakfast, not an issue for us but not to everyones liking. The food was good but not exceptional, they keep a very good pint of Courage Directors, The hotel was warm, although our room was cool, not sure how warm it would be in cold weather
We also ate at the Red Room, which is near to the Tally Ho pub, excellent pizzas.
If staying on Tuesday, well worth visiting the town market, held next to the public car park behind the George

my wife and 2 young boys (18 months and 4yr old) stayed there on Mother's Day, all the staff were so nice and helpful, they made up an air bed and put a cot in the room, nothing was to much trouble, we hadn't been away with both boys before and my wife was a little worried, but they were so good and the hotel, bedrooms , and restraunt was so nice, a real relaxing atmosphere, with a log fire and a guests 2 Labradors relaxing in the bar,
Really enjoyed our stay, thank you!

Room Tip: We stayed in room 4 , fantastic

Went there 21 -24th March 2014 had a room at the back of hotel ,overlooking car park and fields in the distance. Was very quite at night and during early morning .
The room is a basic room a good size with a good bathroom and a great shower hot water every time, had a smell of stale water when first arrived but that disappeared after we had a shower.
Must say for a Hotel/pub they had done a fantastic re-build it does have the old character about it with beams and feel .
Some complain of locals around the bar area but if not for locals lots of pubs would close in the quite period and this is located in a village and we are the visitors plus there is ample areas for visitors to sit .
The only down side is the breakfast I had to send my breakfast back as found a brush hair and also dirty cup but all was replaced very quickly and professionally .The breakfast is not one of the best I have had seems very small amounts especially when my wife had poached eggs & beans thought a few more beans was needed and full breakfast is a bit like a cafe style .
Never had a meal in the evening so cant comment on this but it is a very relaxing around the bar area but be aware of locals having a chuckle or two .
There is another pub near The George just up road about 50m and this is a nice place to go to for drink & food it has that Olde world local feel .

Room Tip: Parking hard to find , turn at the coop store and at the Sheep round about take the turning top r...
