“Like a dream!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 August 2009

During our recent trip through the south of France, we booked only B&Bs because of their cultural advantages. We had difficulty finding a place near the medieval town of Carcassonne, and we chose La Rougeanne solely on the basis of a referral from a popular inn that was already booked. (It was not at that time listed on Trip Advisor). We were not quite sure what to expect, so we were prepared for the possibility of being disappointed. However, our concerns were quickly put to rest the moment we arrived.

We drove north from Carcassonne for a few miles to a little village by the name of Moussloulens. We drove down some very narrow streets, and then turned into the walled parking lot on the grounds of La Rougeanne. What a pleasant surprise! We were immediately struck by the beauty of the inn's facade, which has maintained all of its character and charm from the days that it was a winegrower's mansion. We were promptly greeted by our gracious hostess, Monique, who brought beverages for all five of us to enjoy by the pool. Monique's English and knowledge of the area are excellent. We couldn't believe how lucky we were to find this unknown gem!

The view of the countryside from the pool and the grounds in front of the mansion is like something out of a movie, and the location was so quiet you heard only the birds chirping (there are no major roads nearby to generate noise). We were further impressed when we entered the building and saw how meticulous the rooms and common areas were maintained. Monique and Paul-Andre clearly take great pride in maintaining their home. The photos I took barely do it justice. My wife and I were led to a beautiful room with beautiful views and beautiful furnishings. Everything was spotless and fresh, and reflected Monique's exquisite taste. I could not stop taking photos. The room for our three teenagers (two of whom are 6'1" and 6'3") was furnished with two twins and a double, providing excellent sleeping arrangements. The room was very attractive, and, and two of the beds were in a loft, which our kids found to be a neat arrangement.

Although Monique serves dinner to her guests who request it, she was more than happy to give us a recommendation for a wonderful restaurant inside the stone walls of Carcassonne. The restaurant (St. Jean's) was at the foot of the massive towers of the castle and the food was excellent. The next morning I woke up early to enjoy a jog through the wonderful little town of Moussoulens, and I enjoyed just watching the people in this friendly little town begin their day (don't miss the great view from the WWI memorial). We returned to tour Carcassonne for a second day, but after a while we were yearning to get back to our sumptuous accommodations. Breakfast each morning was wonderful, with fresh fruit grown at La Rougeanne, and the setting by the pool could not have been more beautiful (I keep using that word).

Considering the quality and tranquility of this special place, the price (about 90 Euros per night per room) was a terrific value.

Like us, you will not be disappointed.
