A stay of four days in a delux room gave an experience that will be remembered with lessons on how to pick-up a hotel and a room. Initially we wanted to move into a suite. But after seeing it we decided otherwise. The suite was a room without any space and resembled a dungeon. Then I asked the hotel to give me a room where I will not have reasons to complain. They showed a room that changed by the time I took the keys. This larger room had an attached toilet (small in size without any window or aeration). Hot water is not available throughout in the bath tap, and is restricted to the morning unless you tell them to put the geyser switch on. The wash basin does not have a hot water mixer. Power points in the bath are disabled while those in the room are behind the cot.
The bed was large but hard. The pillows were also hard. The bed sheet supposed to be white was dirty white. The reason, I was explained was hand washing of the sheet and pillow covers, using water from the borewell. The blanket was smelly. The split AC had to be tuned and the nonfunctional remote had to be replaced. The colour TV was old with a poor quality local cable connection. As we got ready to sleep we saw lizards creeping out from the wardrobe. And bed bugs in the cot made our life miserable. Housekeeping was the worst and did not respond to get rid of these pests.
Complimentary breakfast in the restaurant "Caryota" comprised of oily poori, idli, bread and poor quality chutney. Coffee tasted like water. Dinner of rotis and dhal was tasteless. No wonder all of us had a stomach upset. Room service was unhygienic. All dishes were brought in open containers exposed to the environment. The bearers wore dirty clothes and had bad breath.
As the hotel had a function hall there were disturbances. The bar had visitors till late in the night and the cars moving in and moving out was a bigger disturbance.
There was no travel desk and cars were outsourced. Hiring charges were very high.
The behaviour of the hotel staff was very bad. Bookings through email were never responded. It is better to book over phone, and then confirm and reconfirm. And do not forget to tell the reception not to permit housekeeping to enter the room in your absence.
