“A horrible experience to forget...”
Reviewed 29 July 2013

This hotel is best avoided... Some of the staff are very rude, including the manager of the Massage parlor at the central area of the hotel, who accused me and my wife of lying. The Chef of the restaurant Spices yelled at me, after I told him I had soy allergies and that the dish I ordered and started eating did not have soy sauce (in which it was swimming) listed among the ingredients in the menu. What I got from his screams was that it was my responsibility to advise the waiters in advance of any food allergies. He and the restaurant even had the nerve to charge me for a dish I barely touched and which caused me major health problems. Overall, everything in the resort is unbelievably overpriced, with no alternatives in the area. Avoid this hotel, if you don't want your vacation to be ruined!!!

What a great relaxing resort! We had a beach view room (definitely worth the extra money) and stayed for 4 nights. The rooms are basic, but comfortable and with air-con; and great view from the balcony's.
The beach and water is very relaxing and not busy at all (which we thought was strange because it was really beautiful here).
There isn't much to do other than relax and enjoy the peaceful environment. Although there are water sports at the resort next door (which you have to pay extra for - we didn't bother).
Staying anywhere at Nirwana Gardens, you can wonder around all the resorts and eat/drink at any of the restaurants. The food is delicious (but be prepared to pay Singapore prices).
The pool at Nirwana Resort Hotel is huge and very enjoyable! TIP: definitely join in their Friday night BBQ's - great food and entertainment (at Nirwana Resort Hotel - a short walk or get the free shuttle from Mayang Sari).
We enjoyed our stay for a short beach break whilst visiting Singapore.

We stayed with our 2yo daugther.
The location is stunning, right on the beach and very private.

The staff was very friendly and helpful.

The restaurant has a good variety of food and is quiet good and not overpriced.

The chalet was right on the beach, our daughter could just wander on her own and play on the beach. The water is clear blue, clean and very shallow. Perfect for us.

Our room was a bit run down but ok. However the bathroom is very bad, not pleasant. But it did not make our stay bad.

Beautiful spot if you want just to relax by the beach. There is no pool.

Room Tip: For ultimate privacy choose room #4 Starfish

Just a quick 2 night break from Singapore. Its true that the accommodation is dated, but that adds to the charm. If they updated the bathrooms it would be perfectly acceptable. The staff are gracious, friendly and very helpful. We stayed in Dolphin which was close to the beach but would suggest if you have a choice go for a room at either end rather than the middle as the centre rooms have adjoining terraces and are not so private.
The rooms are light, spacious and airy and the air con works well. Its bliss to wake to the sound of the sea. Spices restaurant served wonderfully fresh cuisine, absolutely delicious and the breakfasts are great too.
The beach is private with clear waters and white sand. Storms bring in debris but as soon as the storm is over the staff go out to clean the beach, as they do early each morning.
This resort is perfect for young families and couples or singles. We loved it and would certainly go again if not for one incident. A group of German teenage lads were staying in the room next to ours and were out each night on the terrace next to ours acting like young teenage lads do. We did ask to be moved but it seems nothing else was available. I would ask the management to consider not renting to 3 or 4 lads in a room in this resort as it spoils what could be an almost perfect getaway.

Room Tip: Dolphin are almost on the beach. Ask for a room at either end of the row of 4 as the two central roo...

I was at Bintan for a 2D1N trip and we chose to stay at MayangSari. Its quite a dated, chalet style resort - which was quite deserted in mid May. We arrived at the ferry terminal from SG and was ushered to the hotel by the Nirvana shuttle buses.

Nirvana owns a chain of resorts with different "styles" of accommodations - which I learnt from the bartender by the beach. There's a hotel, chalet, appt, villa style accommodation; all under the same umbrella. The good thing about staying at MayangSari was that we got a free shuttle to all the other resorts under the Nirwana brand name - which was kinda fun, considering that there's nothing much to do at night.

The rooms were big and we had 2 single beds. However, the interior wasn't as clean as expected - it was a little dusty and there were lizard droppings here and there. Worst being the window in the toilet had no curtains - which meant that anyone whom walks past and decided to peak through might just get a free show. Mind you that the ceilings were quite low. We ended up showering outside the bath tub area. MayangSari should really take this into account, considering that a chalet is on the ground floor and its really inconvenient to take a shower or be in the toilet at all!

The beach was good though, MayangSari being the less crowded compared to the other hotels under the chain. Absolutely nothing to do at night, so remember to bring your own booze or entertainment! :) There is no pool in this resort. I would return to Bintan again but would probably try the hotel style accommodation instead.

On a side note, opt for the in-room massage services as its cheaper than going to any of the massage places in the Nirwana vicinity.

Rooms are dated, but they are beginning to renovate. The shuttle bus to the Nirvana Resort (where the swimming pool is) and the activity centre for bowling and shopping and Kelong restaurant runs every 30 minutes. Breakfast quality is not great, but food in evening is good quality (not cheap but not expensive either). During the week occupancy is low so very quiet, whereas the resort is full on friday and saturday, but still relatively quiet compared to the hotel. ferry is full at weekend so one has to book in advance. Some of the rooms are right on the beach and highly recommended. Some of the rooms are set back from the beach and are cheaper and great if your budget is restricted.
See attached resort map for location of rooms and recommendations:
Stingray 1,2,3,4 right on the beach, furthest from reception but closest to beachclub so some noise at weekends (recommended)
Octopus 1,2,3,4 right on the beach (recommended)
Dolphin 1,2,3,4 right on the beach (recommended)
Lobster 2,3,4 beach views
Seahorse 1,2,3,4 beach views and closest to main building so noisier
Bumblebee 1,2,3,4 not classed as sea view but 2 and 3 have seaview. 2 is renovated (recommended)
Blackant 1 partial seaview, 2 partial seaview and renovated, 3 partial seaview, 4 adjacent to housekeeping unit
Ladybug 1-4 not classed as sea view but have partial views
Bonefish 1-4 beachviews but next to restaurant (4 not recommended due to noise)
Seaturtle 1-4 beachviews
Starfish 1-4 right on beach
Butterfly 1-4 no view of the beach
Dragonfly 1-4 no view of beach (not recommended due to noise from the restaurant

Room Tip: See room guide above. Avoid bonefish and dragonfly

I organised a 3D2N stay at the Mayang Sari for a group of 25 pax. Arrived on the island 9:10am and arranged for massage at the Bintan Idol Massage since we are too early for check in. We were picked u from the jetty terminal. Had lunch after massage at Bintan Idol Cafe. Set lunch was good and our group opt to return again on our day of checking out.

Although we arrived at 2pm at Mayang Sari, we were soon given our rooms. Although service was efficient, we were disappointed that the 12 rooms we requested for months before at the Sea-turtle block area was not given to us. Instead we were give chalets spreading all over the resort. The 2 sea-view chalets which we paid extra for, were even more disappointing. Although at the front row, the 2 chalets at Sea-horse block was facing the grass patch outside the reception and not directly to the sea. We requested for a change of chalet and there was only one other sea-view chalet available. Much to our delight, at the Sting-ray, the view was the best and we are only steps away to the sea.
Activities:
We booked courts for badminton at the Nirwana Resort Centre @$8/hr/court and for table tennis game which was inside the bowling area. We all had a game of bowling each, extra game at S$4 a game. The next day, we had lunch at Makan Makan, a food court just next to the bowling alley. Walked out to the back of the block and take the steps down to the Archery and Air-rifle area, you'll be greeted with a beautiful scenic view of the area and the sea from a higher view. I paid for 1 session of Archery @$9 for 25 arrows.
Dinner:
The first evening, Helen the coordinator of the resort, walked us around the Nirwana Resort Hotel main block and suggested the 3 outlets we could have our dinner. We chose the Coffeeshop restaurant. Dinner service was rather slow despite the few customers, but since we are on vacation, we tell ourselves to relax and slow down. We ordered Ala Carte and most had the Satay, Fried Kuay Teow and Nasi Goreng. After dinner, we were pleasantly surprised by the appearance of a band of 5 with guitar, bass and a congo drum. Although Indonesians, they entertained us with Mandarin & Hokkien songs and even a Cantonese "Seong Hoi Tan" ! (Shanghai beach). We were thrilled. They returned after their break and offered us more Spanish songs, delightful!
The 2nd night, we ate at the Kelong restaurant. We had their dinner set and the food and service was also wonderful. The view of the sea at the Kelong was also splendid!
Rooms:
The rooms all looked the same, except for the Queen or Twins beds. Some had ants crawling all over. The housekeeper only came with a can of insecticide but the ants still appear elsewhere. We were extra careful with our opened drinks and snacks. The room was spacious and bed was comfy. If you want the sea-view and do not want to pay for the extra, opt for Bumblebee 2 & 3 and Black Ant 2 & 3. These 4 units are behind and in between the sea-view blocks, so you could also see the sea from your porch, although from a further distance.
Stingray 1 offers the shortest distance to the sea. Best view!
Things to do:
To see the sun-rise. Since the row of chalets face North-West, you'll need to go to an open area facing the East. Wake before 5:30am. Take a stroll to the right of the beach, almost 120M you'll reach the end of this private beach area, walk through the rocks at ankle-deep water, depending on the tide. No worries here, cause the water is crystal clear and you could see the steps you're taking. Take a turn to the right, you'll be greeted with the best sun-rise you can imagine! Make sure you are there by 6am. Those of us that made the effort, were awed! Wade back to the main beach and you can walk out almost 40M towards the sea and the water is still only knee deep. Sink yourself into the beautiful sea water and enjoy! The sand is white and fine.
Since we came as a group, we arranged for morning stretching exercise. We were greeted by a lovely Ms Ratna, who led us for both mornings with aerobics and zumba moves to nice hip hop and up beat songs. By the end of the 20 mins session, we were all sweaty and hungry for breakfast.

Overall, we had an enjoyable time at the resort. The service were good and always with a smile. Transfer by coach all over the resort was efficient and they were so accommodating.
A big thank you to all staff at Mayang Sari Beach Resort!
