I go on many vacations a year and the experience at Meritus Pelangi was wonderful. The room, the swimming pools, the beach are all very very nice. The candle light barbecue dinner at beach side was so romantic. We will remember our stay at Meritus Pelangi for many years to come.

Firstly, I would like to thank Kuoni UK, Rooms 4 U and the Renaissance Hotel at Heathrow for their flexibility, help and support following the disruption of the Volcanic Ash Cloud. Thank you to all of them.

Our flight with Malaysian Airlines was superb, luckily the flight was not full, so my wife and I shared 4 seats centre isle. Again, the arrangements by Kuoni for our holiday, needless to say, went as smooth as silk. They, to me are the only company to use for Far Eastern Holidays.

Reception Staff at the Pelangi Beach Hotel were helpful, happy, smart and pleasant, in fact as were all of the staff at the Hotel.

Rooms we found were a little jaded, but spotlessly clean, ie bed linen, and towels which were changed daily. However one downside was the poor sound insulation between guest rooms. Not a place to keep secrets, as you could quite clearly hear what was being said from your next door neighbours. We did encounter a screaming baby, who seemed to scream non stop, luckily they were not there very long.

The gardens and the pool areas were very impressive with no shortage of sun loungers, although some of the loungers urgently needed replacing, as were the parasols. Seemingly if something broke, no-one seemed to notice, or to fix it.

Beach was clean and had a white ground down shell sand, which was quite sharp underfoot. One needed to wear flip flops at least. The sea was never clear, in fact it was always murky and when we asked why that was, we were told it was because there were so many mangroves surrounding the island.

We found the Hotel to be expensive for food and drinks and in particular breakfast. This was not a strong feature of the Hotel, Fine if you like beef bacon, or turkey sausages. It was certainly not worth the price the Hotel was charging.

One downside for us was that both the Loos by the Pool and the ones in the lobby were no better than many average public toilets at home. They were not dirty, but just scruffy. No nice touches like flowers, smellies etc.

We ate out every night, mostly at Jimmy's in the Paddy Field. If you go out of the main Hotel entrance, turn right, go across the road and walk up a short way to what looks like a large car park, go through that car park and in to Jimmy''s. You won't be disappointed. Food is first class and the service superb. We did eat at a few other Restaurants, but out of our 16 days there, we ate at Jimmys for at least 12 of them. If they offer you a good old fashioned sponge - its my recipe cooked by his lovely wife Sophie.

Langkawi itself was a huge disappointment to us, as we have travelled extensively in the Far East. We hired a car direct from the Hotel and toured around. The only thing worth visiting was the Cable Car and the Bridge. I think the cost of the cable car worked out at about £6 per person. The other thing to possibly see would be the Eagle at Eagle Square in the capital.

Just to give you an example why we were disappointed, we travelled to the top of the Island only to find that, the waterfall, featured on the itinery of the travel companies, was in fact made out of fibreglass, and to top it all, it had no water either. We stopped at a beach for what was going to be our picnic, but had to retreat sharply, as it was absolutely disgusting. It was littered with old tyres, used nappies, bottles and cans .

On saying all of the above, we did have a good Holiday, and met some lovely people there too. We did make the best of the strong points of the Holiday and ignored the poor.

We stayed at Maritus Pelangi Beach Resort for a joint birthday celebration and although the resort is lovely and great location to the beach, they cannot justify the rates they charge, it's a 3 star resort certainly not 5 star. 2 couples in our party had 7 or 8 bats in their rooms who were unfortunately using their bed as a toilet. The staff tried to move the bats with nets but tried this for 2 hours before offering to move them to another room. The air con in our bedroom was also very noisy and we could also hear the slightest sound from neighbouring chalets. This resort needs huge enovation to command the rates they're charging. I'd like to add that I never normally write review but having read the review on this hotel before the reviews on this hotel having read them before booking are not in my mind a true indication of

We arrived after a long flight, only to be welcomed by Isamal who drove us by buggy to our room. What a character,he was great and so enthusiastic .
The room itself was very spacious and with the much needed air conditioning. We could step out and practically walk into the pool,
Every morning ,we were welcomed by the local cats ,which we regularly fed.We didn't eat at the hotel as it was pricey,so we would walk down to the restaurants in town about 10 mins away.Thoroughly recommend the Red tomoto ,left side of road.Only one downfall i can think of,and thats the sea,it can be murkey,so you cant see the fish .

Stayed at the hotel for 10 nights on our Honeymoon, it was amazing!, lots to do and service was amazing, staff always attended to our needs, even as far as cooking things to our own specification in restaurants on site.

Beach very nice and watersports activities are available(Jet Ski's, Boat Rides, Banana Boat etc etc), recomend to swim in the protected part of the beach due to jellyfishes.

Hotel itself was very very nice, we had the Deluxe Chalet overlooking the pool, with a nice spacious terrace balcony, the place was nicely air-conditioned and you can just the remote to control air-con lazying in the bed, including a bedside electronic remote unit which will let you control all the lights and the overhead fan(good for lazy mode), the rooms were really clean and didnt appear tired at all, room service is always available for cleaning etc etc, just ring 'em up!

Staff was very friendly and very helpful, they were always willing to do whatever they can to make your stay comfy, some reviews I read were shocking and people must have been smoking crack before writing some reviews because this place really exceeded expectations for me and I was there for 10 nights

Right, now to speak about the insects, if you are scared of house spiders and small house lizards then just dont go to South East Asia period. they were bugs there but staff will always be available if you need to get rid of any unwanted bugs, personally I am not scared of spiders, just scared of lizards, so I kept the windows and doors shut even if one came in the room you can call room service and they'll send someone to get rid of them. as soon as sun has gone down, expect the bugs to be about and lizards are very common, these lizards are harmless and are only chasing mosquitos which is good, but me being scared of lizards could easily enjoy my holiday!, In the day you hardly see the lizards anyway.

Few tips - restaurants on site are a lil pricey, same as UK prices, there are however plenty of cheaper restaurants if you pop out and have 5-10 min walk down from the resort, you can also walk on the beach and then just cut through on to the road.

all in all - I definatley recommend this hotel, please ignore the overly exagurated negative reviews I know how it feels when these negative reviews put you off. nothing to be worried about at all, its a brilliant and friendly place to be, everyone speaks english in and off the resort, Taxis are available everwhere and its very safe to travel around Langkawi, there are 2 shopping malls, both are in Kuah Town 10 mins within each other but 20 mins taxi ride away from the resort and Taxis are very cheap, also the exchange rate is better at the resort than in UK! so dont exchange all of the money from UK.

I have plenty more positive things to say about the resort, staff and Langkawi so if anyone wants to know more, just drop me an e-mail. MCMLXXXV_SSR@yahoo.co.uk

hope this has helped

Enjoy :)
