“Good, basic, clean and ideal location”
Reviewed 28 March 2012

You have to remember reviews (mine) are in accordance to the level/standard/rating of the hotel. So, don't expect any outstanding facilities. The previous reviews mentioned lacking customer service and they were right. On checking in, paying for your room and key deposit, we were pointed to across the road (not beach side) with our toilet paper in hand :(

We were travelling as 2 couples, in two rooms and one of our companions laughed that reception didn't seem to want to hand over an extra roll, 2 days into our 3 night stay.

The rooms are very spacious, clean and cool, with nice bathrooms - Asian style. Our rooms were side by side, with adjoining double internal doors...so we could open them to make one room.

There seem to be various configurations of rooms, like ours, single cabins and normal multi level hotel style, side by side rooms. But all have their own porch or verandah.

The TV reception was terrible, with English programs, some of the time. There is no room service or inroom safe.

No breakfast on site, so turn left (from the road side part of the motel) and walk to the next corner and you'll see Man's Cafe. The lovely lady who runs this place, serves nice food at reasonable prices, with a smile.

We stayed here for one night only. The rooms were basic with old fashioned bed and decor. The bathroom too was basic but fine. We only spent a few hours in the room to sleep, so for us it was OK. I found the staff the be friendly and helpful. The location is good, but this is definitely a backpacker place and nothing more.

We checked into the AB Motel in Feb'12 for 2 Nights. The best part of the Hotel is the location..bang on pantai cenang and right on the beach. The Hotel has 2 parts - 1 on the beach and the other across the road away from the beach but 2 min walk to the beach.
The staff at the reception was very rude and unpleasant. The room service was just for the name sake and not at all prompt and again very rude. The rooms are more of a back-packer kind rather than a hotel or motel. The bathroom was worse, very small more of a cabin bathroom categ. There are some deluxe rooms as well which seem ok from outside. Beach is connected to the hotel or the hotel is right on the beach.

The Hotel location is the best part. Right on the busy Pantai Cenang beach with eateries and shops lined up nearby. Langkawi underwater aquarium is 5 min walk.

Room Tip: Select deluxe rooms closer to the beach.

Langkawai is a very beautiful island yet is inadequately served with decent mid class hotels. I struggled to find accommodation upon arrival and out of desperation booked in at AB. The reception staff are rude and totally unhelpful, it's a case of take it or leave it and here's the key and go find your room yourself(not easy because the numbering system is unique!) however my view was overlooking the beach front and this compensated for the tired and dirty room. I arrived on the island with out pre booking(not a good idea). Make sure you do your research and book in advance. Ps the poor service in the motel is equally matched in all the restaurants, you get the feeling that non Muslims are not particularly welcome.

Ok. Mixed reviews for this place, but it was one of the best places I stayed at on my trip. As people say, there are 2 sites, (1) on the beach, noisy, and (2) across the road, more peaceful.
The across the road rooms are in 2 buildings, and this means 3 categories. Category 1 is the downstairs rooms in the 2 story building (this building is designated 'E') which are cell like, but appeal to the young and the frugal with their 60RM price tag. Category 2 is upstairs in this same building : 100 RM for a room with one large bed and 1 small one, (a/c, fridge, hot water) and this is a good deal, but it seems to appeal particularly to those who are taking advantage of the cheap alcohol on the island and who want to kick on by partying into the wee hours on the varandah outside their room with their close personal friends.
If you are such a person, please remember that there are others close by who are trying to sleep.
Better by far for the less gregarious is category 3, aka the 'D' units, a series of freestanding pairs of single story units on the left hand side when viewed from the road costing a very reasonable 80 RM. Units D3 - D10 are a comfortable distance from the road.
Good points - a big room, a/c + a fan, a fridge, hot water, queen size bed, peace and quiet.
If you're picky - no remote for the 3 local channel TV, you have to ask for toilet paper (all of 80 sen in any nearby store), and, the windows are clear glass. This latter quibble is only for the non exhibitionists.
Summary : great location, good prices.
Warning - the liquor choices at the duty free stores at the port and in the main town are far wider that those in the stores at Canang. If you want the 2 litres of JW Black for USD45, no problems, but if you're looking for something more exotic, the shops in the town should be your first port of call.

Good place to stay, there is cheaper but not anywhere I stayed as nice as AB. Some people complain others don't, i guess it depends on your attitude and a little to do with luck. I stayed there for about 2 weeks and didnt have any complaints. The resort is popular because it's reliable. As two young girls travelling we found it very welcoming and found that we wanted to stay a little longer because the routine became welcomed for a while. The beach is nice but is becoming increasingly touristy.
'Tomato' restaurant is fantastic, lovely staff and cheap cheap brilliant food. ALSO for lunch there is a lovely older lady on a stall selling all sorts of goodies.
Langkawi is a lovely retreat and I believe AB is definitely worth it...

Room Tip: AC is good across the road, no need to be on the beach and pay more if you dont mind.

Have been travelling to Asia and especially Langkawi for several years and stopped at AB several times. After this years visit and stay at AB Motel in January & February 2012, l will never stop here again!. Firstly the positive point, if your willing to pay 120 Ringgit for a terrace bungalow on the beach side of the road you may get a balcony with a great sea view!.
Thats where the positives end!, the negatives are as follows:-
1. Staff attitude customers is awfull & you get the feeling because AB is always busy, they no longer have to make any effort for your business. There attitude seems especially worse towards western visitors!.
2. Rooms are clean but very basic, no toilet rolls provided, no water!. Lack of power points!.
3. Beds are just exceptable but with what appears to be sand bags for pillows!.
4. Had prolem with constant running water in bathroom for several nights, attempts by maintence men failed & had to wear headphones to block out noise & try to sleep!. Staff attitude was basically we dont care!
5. Cenang beach has developed very fast over the past few years, it is becoming very expensive & hectic!, you can liken it to Aonangs demise in Krabi, Thailand!.
