After a long hard section of coast to coast (21 miles) we arrived to a very welcoming place. The stuff were excellent and very friendly and helpful. The food was excellent and very good value - huge portions!
The room was very good, clean and comfortable and what an amazing location!

Thank 85walker

I imagine if you've been for a long walk on the moors this pub must be a very welcoming sight, cosy , warm and a hearty meal. But this place is not just for walkers. The view is spectacular from the ridge so worth a drive to there too. 12 of us did just that and had a tremendous meal. The portions are very generous and the steak and ale pie should be a signature dish it's so delicious. Overall a really good experience

The Lion Inn is situated high in the Yorkshire Moors and is a walkers' paradise.

Come in Winter and there are roaring fires, can be howling winds and snow. Come in the summer and the welcome is just as warm, the food delicious as ever and a range of beers second to none. Speaking of which the Lion Inn always has Theakstones' Old Peculiar, which is worth the journey just on its own. But, just word of warming Old Peculiar is only to be consumed after the walk.

We have visited the Lion Inn, both in winter and summer, as couple or with friends, out for the day or with a group of walkers.

The pub/restaurant/hotel, its location, its ambience, the food, the beers, the staff and the welcome.

Brilliant! If you have never been, you have literally no idea what you are missing.

We have eaten here on several occasions whilst on days out, however, as the main driver hubby never gets to sample the ales (of which there is a great selection), so as a treat we decided to stay overnight. The pub is great, traditional, with stone walls, wooden beams, low ceilings and open fires and has a great friendly atmosphere. It welcomes all whether you are a walker in muddy boots, a day tripper or having a familiy celebration. We have eaten in the pub area before and the dining room, but this time as we were staying over we decided to eat in the restaurant. I have read on some of the reviews posted here that people have been disappointed with the food, all I can say is they must be extremely picky or very hard to please. The food is FANTASTIC, the portions are HUGE and its good value, my only complaint is that the portions are so big, its impossible to eat it all and definitely no room for pud. Hubby and I both had the garlic breaded mushrooms to start, a reasonable amount of mushrooms and side salad and garlic mayo, for the main course I had chicken supreme with chips and veg (peas and carrots) and hubby had the breaded fish medley (scampi, scallops, white fish pieces) with chips, peas and salad. Both portions were massive and neither of us could eat it all. Honestly the fish medley could have fed two people easily, thats how big it was! and cost a reasonable £40.05 for the 2 of us. After eating we retired to the pub and sampled the ales, and my memory is a bit vague after that :-) The room we had was in the new bit, room 12 on the ground floor, which was actually a family room so it was plenty big enough for the two of us, large bathroom with bath and shower, all very clean and modern and very warm, so definitely no complaints there. Breakfast next day was served 8.00am - 9.30am and again was very good, the usual choice of cereals and fruit juices, prunes, grapefruit, yogurt, toast and jams, tea or coffee and then a choice of cooked breakfast, full english, vegetarian, kippers, beans on toast, eggs on toast, and the list goes on. Again a very generous portion and I failed to managed all mine. Yes this place is in the middle of nowhere and yes its a long winding road full of sheep, but it is well worth the journey and I would highly recommend it. Will I be returning? DEFINITELY!
