“Lovely stay in a great location”
Reviewed 5 October 2013

My wife and I stayed here on the C2C hike. The setting is tremendous and the inn is quite spacious. The room was very nice with a good size bathroom. We ate lunch in the pub and dinner in the restaurant. Meals were all good, accompanied by some fine ales. Our room was ready upon an "early arrival" as well. This is a lovely area of England and the Lion Inn is a very nice property. Highly recommended!

Visited for the first time with friends and family to celebrate a birthday. Its position on the North Yorkshire Moors is stunning, and it is obviously a very popular place. The bedrooms I saw were lovely - maybe new extensions or recently upgraded, and all were en-suite. The beds were comfortable. The food is good standard 'pub grub'. My fish was delicious, but I was told the steak was tough although came as rare as requested. The bar is well stocked with beers, spirits and liqueurs, but I was disappointed with the white wines. The staff were friendly and efficient, especially considering the business of the venue. It is a place I would recommend.

Room Tip: Only one room has a walk-in shower. This is a double shower in the form of a 'wet room'.

We stayed in Gillamoor for 4 days and visited the Lion twice.
Amazed that on a Monday night there were over a hundred diners in there , yet the service was excellent.Returned on the Wednesday when passing and again good value.

I came to the lion inn with my family this week and although the setting is lovely, we feel the place has really gone downhill. As a group we have been coming to the restaurant for the last 30 years and were very disappointed with the service this year. We were sitting for at least half an hour before we were asked for our starters order and all in all we were there for three hours before we finished our pudding! We didn't even get any apology from the staff either as to how long everything was taking. We also felt the food was overpriced and were upset to see that the normal pudding table we usually look forward to is no longer there! In summary, the setting is lovely and the food was nice but we will possibly consider somewhere else next year which is a shame after having come here for so many years.

Day 10 of the coast to coast. Arrived at around 5pm on a Saturday. Place was heaving but well staffed so no wait to check in, get a beer and arrange a table. Two of us had a family room. Modern décor and plenty of space with well appointed bathroom. View from bedroom window was awesome. Large restaurant good portions at dinner and breakfast. Will definitely return to this pub.

Despite being in the middle of nowhere, it is a supper busy place and surprisingly large. The staff nonetheless are friendly and attentive. The rooms are good (note some of the cheapest rooms are very small along with the beds) but all are spotlessly clean. The food is excellent and good value.

Room Tip: Go for a more expensive room if you want some comfort
