The Lion Inn is an absolute must stop for all Coast to Coasters! It is a family run 16th Century free house located on remote Blakey Ridge at the highest point of the North York Moors National Park. If you are lucky enough to make the walk from Clay Bank on a clear day, the moors are gorgeous in their bleakness and you will see some breathtaking views. This walk is part of the c2c, so you will come upon the Lion Inn and if you are not stopping here for the night, you must at least stop for lunch and a brew if you wish. The food is fabulous, offering a huge variety and the bar has won numerous awards for its great selection of drinks and ales. The place is absolutely packed every time we have ever been here, which attests to it's popularity. The Inn oozes with ambience and has a fascinating history. The manager, Paul, and all his staff, could not be nicer or more helpful. This a superbly run business and just a great place to stay and/or eat.

Stayed here on our c2c walk. Loverly isolated location, great to sit outside with a beer at lunchtime. En-suite room good with plenty of hot water for a bath. Plenty of choice for evening meal, massive portions and well cooked. Breakfast good and staff friendly.Would stay here again.

If you are in the area and feeling cold, hungry and in need of refreshment, this is exactly the kind of place to go. friendly, busy, warm and welcoming. Proper pub grub and plenty more. The portions are big and satisfying, good selection of beers and other drinks and plenty of space to park even when there are gatherings of runners, cyclists or others. Well behaved dogs are welcome and the views of the moors are great, as you would expect of "Gods own country".

Don't be tempted to drive past.

We stayed here on our coast to coast trip. we booked the cheapest room, which we thought was exceptional value at £48 including breakfast. it was a quirky tiny room with two single beds with a staircase that you had to duck under to get too. All reminiscent of an old smugglers pub .The bathroom was separate but a delight as unlimited boiling hot water eased our aching joints. we dined at the pub ( no option really) and found the food amazing and in huge quantities with a fantastic olde worlde atmosphere . The room was incredibly hot which we had to keep ventilating through opening the tiny windows but its understandable as the bleak cold winds make the Lion inn a haven after a cold walk in March. Breakfast was sumptuous and the packed. Lunch at only £5 each was very good. Value and. Kept us. Going all day. Overall we found the experience memorable

Myself and my partner have started to come here for lunch when we're in the area, all I can say is if you come for lunch don't have a big breakfast, I have a big appetite and even I was struggling. Steak & mushroom pie, lots of meat and a mountain of real homemade chips, not skinny frozen fries. While we have never stopped the night, we can recommend the food here. The only reason I haven't given 5/5 is that it is slightly pricey.

we have been here for a meal a few times before but this was the first time we had stayed and it will not be the last we stayed on a Saturday night after exploring the local area after having a relaxing bath we went for our meal in the bar area with a real coal fire and real ale Black sheep which was gorgeous i had fillet steak and my wife had scampi and both were excellent after a good few pints sat in front of the open fire we eventually went to bed the rooms are really nice and the beds are comfy with all that you would need for a weekend stay breakfast was also really nice and you are spoilt for choice with fresh juice , cereal and a full english breakfast the only thing that was missing for me was beans with my breakfast apart from that it was spot on, also the staff are very helpfull and make you feel very welcome.

What an absolutely delightful C2C moment it is to emerge from a bend and cutting on the old railway and see the Lion Inn standing high and proud above the next curve in the track. You're going to work a bit more to get up there but, my word, you're going to appreciate it when you do.

The Lion's secret is that it is much bigger than it looks. They've done clever Tardis-like expansion so that actually it's quite a big place but manages to retain its lovely cottagey, small-pub feel. We had lovely comfy rooms and an absolutely terrific view out over the moors - you really do feel like you're pretty much on the roof of the national park here. Dinner was good if not world-class and the service was cheerful and quick. Terrific beer.

It was a great feeling to stay at the Lion and we would strongly recommend it as an essential North York Moors experience.

Room Tip: Get a moorland view! (Might be impossible not to ...)
