Used a Living Social voucher for a weekend away with my mum, sister and auntie and was quite disappointed when we drove up to the hotel. We hadn't appreciated it was right next to the A1! We parked round the back and had to walk past a collapsing greenhouse with broken panes, and external peeling paint, so first impressions weren't good. However, the reception staff were very friendly, the rooms clean and modern, the bar meals delicious & reasonably priced, service was good. In the morning the breakfast was really good and a nice range of things to eat. We all slept well despite being near the A1. All in all it was an enjoyable experience but could do with a bit of TLC outside.

The photograph on the website is very misleading. This is motel in a service station just off the A1(M). The property, inside and out, looks 'tired' and 'well worn'. The floors throughout creak when walked on and it's in a service station. Don't expect much sleep! The bed was comfortable and the sheets were clean. The shower just about worked.

Lovely hotel, staff were very helpful and friendly. The room and ensuite was clean and tidy, plenty of room for a travel cot too. The kids were happy they had cartoons to watch on the television too. Breakfast was yum, loads of choice defiantly something for everyone and again staff very helpful friendly and polite. I would highly recommend for a one night stop over to a few days defiantly everything you need.

Room Tip: Best to ring to book

I booked a room at the Lodge as a stopover during a business journey north. The criteria i used:

A. Room/good night's sleep.
B. Wifi signal so I could work
C. Ideally a local venue rather than a corporate
D. Decent catering

The hotel is well located, serviceable and hugely dated, not that the latter matters. The charm of the 1970's theme is quite attractive, once you get used to it.

However, annoyingly the wifi did not work (to start with), despite being told when I booked earlier in the day that it was fine. As it transpired, they had been experiencing problems with it for 2 days. I wish the receptionist had told me when I called to book.

That said, the signal did work later on but not when i needed it.

The heater in my room exploded into life at about 230 am. Clearly there was something seriously wrong with it as it made a deafening engine-like noise. It also meant I didnt get back to sleep till around 530 am.

I did tell the recptionist bookingout, but I have to question whether electrical checks are being carried out properly. A dodgy heater is a pretty serious statement of lack of care, process and H&S.

To their credit the staff were really nice. The hotel has a pleasant bar, good beer too. Dinner was better than I anticipated. The chinese style loin of pork was pretty decent. Although breakfast was a little dissapointing. The Lodge likes to mention 'local' sourcing. However unless Richmond sausages are actually made in Richmond down the road, which I guess would therefore class them as being local, they did not appear to be anything more than standard cater pack sausages. I admit that I did not ask the servers, but it's pretty easy to know the difference between artisan and mass produced.

When I consider the purpose of staying there and my rationale for booking the lodge rather than a Day's Inn, I have to say that the overall experience was terrible, despite the good points. A poor wifi signal and the issue with the heater cause me to judge the stay as being terrible. I won't be staying there again.

Room Tip: I can only suggest that you don't stay here. There is a Day's Inn in Wetherby, not far away.

We stopped at this service station, expecting overpriced food and uninterested staff. We couldn't have been made wrong. This place is an absolutely gem. They have two menus, but are happy to rustle up a bacon butty if that is all you want. The portions are generous and the staff incredibly friendly. This will definitely be a regular motorway stop for my family.
