We popped into Bedale off the A1 on a long journey north hoping for a lovely Yorkshire Dales pub lunch, parked up and spotted the Waggon and Horses and in this case, beware, appearances are very deceptive. Presents well initially with a Black Sheep served here sign on the windows and door poster; on arrival at the bar, which is festooned with Black Sheep bar mats and a Black Sheep pump, we foolishly asked for a pint and a half of Black Sheep, ..... why wouldn't we? Barmaid says, we don't serve Black Sheep, the landlord wont keep it, the locals don't like it! Take the signs down then i cry inside, but as we are hungry and of Polite British origin, we stay and order the Haddock and chips for lunch and a pint of Theakstons and a diet coke. Both were flat. To be fair, the barmaid did warn us that the fish would be a frozen piece, but i had expected fresh batter on a piece of frozen fillet; unfortunately it was an awful, pre-battered frozen abomination. To add insult to injury it had eyes and a tail printed on the frozen batter. Add a few under-cooked frozen chips and peas and salad, and hey-ho, you have probably the worst meal I have been served in a long time. We left Bedale disappointed and hungry, ..... should have read TA first.

I eat here quite often and you can not fault the food. There is a no pushchairs sign on the door but only due to lack if space as it is a small pub but cosy all the same.
The menu has a great variety on it and even though it does not have a children's menu the staff can do smaller portions of most things and quite happy to sort out a smaller meal for the kids.
The mixed grill is huge and a you can't fault portion sizes! They also have sandwiches, baguettes, Sunday dinners, a specials menu, lasagne, burgers and Allsorts.
It is all priced really well and our Sunday dinner normally comes to about £25 and that's for 2 adults, a child and a few drinks as well.

My Husband and I decided to go out for a meal. We went to this pub/restaurant in Bedale. The food was excellent, plates are full of food so you don't leave hungry. No Kids Menu but we ordered a sandwich and bowl of chips for our Daughter. The only thing we must say is there is no high chairs available so would advise to take your own booster chair. Staff polite, and always wiling to help.

Thank Georgina A

Went to this pub looking for lunch as a fairly large party including our 18month old daughter. Once we'd got past the 'no pushchairs' sign and sat at a table we were told bluntly that they don't have highchairs and food would be at least 30 minutes. We quickly left and enjoyed a meal at one of the other pubs in Bedale. A shame that they are so family un-friendly as we'd heard good things about the food.
