Reviewed 15 March 2014 for a stay in March 2014

Just returned from a 5 night stay not new to the area as we have been going for a few years(more than care to remember ) brilliant time could not fault weather were so lucky. Acorns is really nice and relaxing, with the sun coming throughout he patio doors my hubby had the odd few forty winks. Enough space for us 2 . Peaceful location and enjoyed the 15 min walk to the Malian hotel were we ate each night , but could easily have cooked at Acorns just lazy I guess!

experience was good and will definitely return as the weather picks up, really nice cottage in a good location quiet and friendly. owners there if you need them.

“Extremely comfortable and surprisingly spacious accommodation”

We enjoyed a superb "half-term" break in this property and found it comfortable, and well laid out; loved the fact that the two bedrooms were well separated! The kitchen area was well equipped with everything needed for 4 people. The seating in the lounge was fine, as were the beds. Despite some chilly nights the property was easy to keep warm.
Although the property lacks a meaningful garden, the whole village of Goathland is
itself a green zone with plenty of paths to and along the nearby beck or maybe to the Railway Station for the NYMR, about a 10 minute stroll away. Goathland also doubles as Heartbeat's Aidensfield if that sort of thing impresses you!

“Return autumn visit - just as good as last year!”
Reviewed 11 October 2013 for a stay in October 2013

Just had a week at Acorns, having enjoyed a stay there at a similar time last year.

On both occasions I have been impressed with the condition and cleanliness of the property considering it is 'end of season'. Walking through the front door, I got the impression that we were the first people to stay there: it was spotless.

The Welcome file giving details of the property was clear, helpful and comprehensive.

Having a small (and very well-behaved !) dog, the facilities were ideal.

Sleeping in the twin room, I can say that I had the best nights' sleeps in a very comfortable bed. No doubt the good fresh air of the N Yorks Moors was a contributory factor.

The dimensions of the kitchen are small, but this presents no problem since we took it in turn to do the various tasks. Apart from preparing meals, I successfully baked bread in the oven: I would not have expected to find a loaf tin so I took my own: all other possible utensils for preparation of food were available.

I am perplexed to see a recent posting which states that basics were lacking. The 'flat plates' referred to had presumably warped before our visit since they had a surrounding lip!! They are from a modern IKEA range and are well able to contain gravy, sauce etc. Bowls for soup, or other runny dishes, are provided. Likewise, all windows and doors opened without difficulty - or oil - (and did so last year).

It has to be said that the weather conditions in this area can change dramatically from day to day, but the facilities at Acorns (given the advice in the Welcome file) enable a comfortable warm/cool stay.

Liked best: The location and surrounding area. The 'home from home' feel. The personal accessibility of the owners - not an agency. Good food at the Mallyan.
Liked least: Lack of basic provision requirements at local shops - all they seem to concentrate on is Heartbeat souvenirs. However, good provisions can be bought in Sleights

We have stayed in goathland many times it is handy for the steam trains and the shops. good walks too. Very quiet at night too.
We found this property lacking in basics. We know it was a hot summer. I am not normaly a picky person .
there was only one small window in the kitchen which i had to oil to get open, the fridge froze the salad stuff in the bottom, the dinner plates were unsutable for purposethey were flat. I had to buy some proper plates.also lacking in kitchen utensils. Being out all day we like to cook a proper meal when we get back. it is self catering.
The patio door in the lounge would not open properley the catch had to be freed up and the runners oiled.
The main bed was very hard ,also one tiny window in the room. The twin room only one window opened.
There was no bath mat to stand on in the shower and no where to hang anything like soap. There was no where to put anything in the bathroom lack of shelves, the push plug in the sink was black had to clean it.
The washing machine draw was black i had to clean that.
we were provided with a fan by the lady who looked after the property but that was replaced by a fan heater by the owner which was not good at all.
There seems be a lack of maintenance.

Management Response
17 Oct 2013
We acknowledge your review of 'Acorns'.

Firstly may I thank you for bringing to our attention the faulty fridge. The thermostat had failed and a new fridge has now been installed. We were however perplexed by your comments re inadequate ventilation: The bungalow contains six opening windows, front and back doors and two large sets of patio doors, all serviced and maintained! We have never needed or suggested that we would provide a fan. However we did when asked. We find your comments on the black plug misleading as it was actually the underside of a mechanically lever operated plug which was only visible once removed. We pride ourselves on the cleanliness of our property and have never had a previous complaint, but have added the plug underside to our cleaning routine! The range of utensils and cleanliness conforms to our 4 star Tourist Board rating. We were dismayed to hear of the difficulty in using the dinner plates. They are of a standard design with a rim, and have been satisfactory for previous guests. We were also disappointed to find the kitchen blind had been broken during your stay but not reported to us. We repaired it immediately without notifying you in our spirit of immediate repairs for the comfort of our next guests.

“Nice place, good location”

A very nice, clean accommodation. Good location for walks on the moors and handy for Whitby. Plenty to see and do in area.
Owners were located in the village and were very friendly.
If we are up in Yorkshire again we would definitely stay here again.

“Home from home”
Reviewed 23 June 2013 for a stay in June 2013

Stayed at Acorns with my family and enjoyed every minute. The cottage is spotlessly clean and has everything needed for a relaxing break. Very comfortable accommodation, nice garden with a bbq all in a great location. Acorns is in Goathland which is a great base from which to explore this beautiful part of Yorkshire. The cottage is in the village so visitors can enjoy a brief stroll to enjoy a pint and food in the Goathland Hotel (Aidensfield Arms) or the Mayallan Spout Hotel. The owner is very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Highly recommend Acorns Cottage.

“Excellent base for surrounding area”
Reviewed 10 May 2013 for a stay in December 2012

Stayed here on more than 1 occasion and have always enjoyed our time immensely.
The property is ideally suited to explore the local area and the north yorks railway, goathland station only 5 minutes walk.
Always clean and comfortable in a quiet part of the village we always look forward to returning.
