“disappointed”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 September 2012

Recently called here for lunch with friends. One of the group had been here a few months before and praised it highly. I ordered the beef brisket which in my mind should be tender and it was extremely tough in the sense where i could not get my knife through part of it, the sauce was luke warm and tasteless. The others had simple bar food and said it was OK. I did not mention it to the waitress i just left it, this usually signifies something wrong. I know i should have said something but felt a bit embarassed about saying something when the chef surely should have known not to send it out in this state. Wonder if the reason was because they are advertising head chef job? Hope so then it means it would be worth trying again ! On the up side the staff were very friendly and the building is beautiful.

Firstly please accept my apologies for the meal you had with us last week as I gather from your review it was not as it should have been. I really wish you had said something at the time as we could have replaced it for you with no fuss what so ever! Please, I ask anyone reading this review to always say if they are not 100% happy at the time as after the fact it really is impossible to put it right. We do try our best at all times to look after all of our guests and make each and every one feel welcome and at home.

We recently visited Goathland and decided to visit the Mallyan on the way home for evening meal. The place looks realy nice and I must say the staff were very nice. We decided to have a meal in the lounge bar and selected from the menu. The food arrived promt , we had staters and main course. The quality of the meals were poor with the vegetables being just warm and bland.

I am very dismayed to read your review. As you can see from other guest reviews this is not the "norm" for The Mallyan and please accept my sincere apologies if the food you received was sub-standard. If you can I would really appreciate you contacting The Hotel and giving me more information as I know nothing about your displeasure and after checking with my staff it seems you made no comment to them on the day you made your visit, had you done we would have replaced your food immediately. Again many apologies

fantastic hotel that definitely should be 4*, not 3, the staff are friendly and exceed all expectations, nothing is too much bother, the service, the food and the great weather made it a excelllent long weekend break. We ate in the restaurant each night and we were not disappointed, the standard of food and service was exceptional. We would definitely go back but would recommend that anyone over 6' avoids a top floor room, as the overhead beams (which were very quaint) and a shower (head) which was static and not suitable for my husband who is 6' 3", but after speaking to reception they moved us to a different room for our second/third night. Despite the church bells, which you can hear but I took some earplugs and was fine. Lovely surroundings and gardens very tranquil and makes you totally relax, plus its a great location to visit other areas.............definitley recommend this hotel to others, you wont be disappointed and we are ready to book again for next year.

Room Tip: just mention if you are tall, that you ask NOT to be placed in the 'attic' rooms, very restr...

My wife and I spent two lovely days at this hotel. I only have praise for this hotel. Lovely welcoming staff, a friendly bar serving fresh tasty food and an excellent restaurant. The bedroom was large are comfortable and spotlessly clean. It is set in a lovely clean and tidy village and not too far from other places of interest in the local area. In our opinion this hotel shows how a hotel can be run, other hotels we have visited in the past should take a look at this one.
We both would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to visit North Yorkshire Moors and the surrounding area.

Room Tip: The room we stayed in was a Superior Double Room, well worth it. I cannot comment on other rooms in...

Just spent 4 nights at the gorgeous Mallyan Spout. Ignore the 3 star rating for this hotel, it is one of the best places I have stayed in for a long time and just spent 3 weeks in 5 stars in Australia. The staff are the most helpful, friendly team I have ever come across, nothing was too difficult. We had booked the NYM train for the Friday night to go for the meal on the pullman, we were running really late as the traffic was terrible. Arrived at the hotel at 7.05pm (train due to leave at 7.15pm)......no problem, they contacted the train for us, told us to get our glad rags on and gave us a lift to the station (Thanks Joe), Gothland Station (Harry Potter station), the train then stopped for us and allowed us to join. Made my weekend, as was one of the main reasons for going.

Breakfast was delicious, gorgeous cooked Yorkshire breakfast.

Ate in the full restaurant on 2 occasions had the best steak and peppercorn sauce I have ever eaten and the chips were heavenly. Starters of asparagus was lovely and king prawns were perfection. The lamb shank was cooked so the meat just fell off the bone. Desserts were massive, the Eaton mess was just too big.

Wine list was varied and sensible prices.

Ate one night in the bar, which again was lovely. Great service and hearty good.

Room 19 was a good size, nice view of the gardens and bathroom was huge. Cleanest hotel room I have stayed in in the UK for a while. My only comment would be it would be nice to replenish the mineral water each day.

The staff made this stay for us and if we are back in the area will definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Ask for one with the view of the moors or the garden......mind you, you are in the middle of no wher...

Converting a very large and elderly house into a hotel will always result in compromises but also provides a place with a quirky style that has retained many hints of its country house past. Our room, number 19, was big, well furnished and comfortable. There were a few elements in need of attention but these did not detract from the quality of the accommodation.

The staff were very friendly and very helpful but as they cover many front of house duties throughout the hotel the speed of service was a little lacking on one occasion.

We took dinner on our first evening and were very pleased at the quality and quantity of the food. The steaks were cooked to perfection, moist, very tender and very tasty. There was a good selection of vegetables, well presented and cooked just right. The breakfast choice is comprehensive and, like the dinner menu, includes lots of local produce.

The location of the hotel is ideal for touring the North York Moors and visiting in August we had the added bonus of the seeing the heather in full bloom.
