“Avoid room 7!!”
Reviewed 8 November 2013

We stayed for two nights in October booked through superbreaks, I am sure you get put in worst rooms booking through them. Room 7 was really small no windows and tiny bath room bit like a prison cell and was very dusty could not stop sneezing in mornings. The food and service and everything else was lovely and would go back but would defo upgrade room.Staff were brilliant.

I cannot understand some of the reviews I have read about the Parsonage. We have just returned from a 2 night stay and we found it to be very well organised, clean and very well run. We were booked into the annexe which we found quiet, spacious and vey clean. The bed was very comfy and the shower very powerful and hot. The waiter and waitresses were very courteous and efficient both at dinner and breakfast which was excellent. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone. Due to time we were unable to use the spa facilities but we did look and they looked very good. Will use them next time we visit which we definitely will.

Room Tip: We asked for an upper, quiet room which we got, the only noise was from the laundry cupboard and the...

Had a three night stay with my girlfriend during half term to unwind and use spa and do a little sight seeing. Overall we enjoyed our stay and here is our feedback...
Positives:
Really friendly staff
A nice size room with lovely bathroom
Beautiful setting and building
Really good spa facilities
Ample parking
Free wi-fi
Good breakfast selection
Negatives:
Restaurant food was not very good and service was poor
Room not hoovered during our stay
Showers in the spa were TERRIBLE
Not enough signs telling people to shower in the spa - you wouldn't believe how many people think it's okay to build up a sweat in sauna and then get straight into jacuzzi
Rooms not soundproof
Tried to double charge us for dinner in final bill

On the plus side we found great food at a pub called the white swan in Deighton (3 minute drive or 10 minute walk)

Room Tip: We stayed in the coach house and view wasn't great plus they did not Hoover it.

I had booked the Parsonage hotel as a suprise for myself and boyfriends (now fiance) 3rd anniversary. After a really tough touristy week in London, we were really excited to get to the hotel and enjoy what seemed to be a very high standard hotel and amazing spa area (the spa is definitely high standard, really lovely clean facilities and lovely staff). We arrived in York at 11.15am and decided to go straight to the hotel, we were told check in wasnt until 2pm, which was fine with us as we headed straight over to the spa to relax for a bit. We came back in to the hotel at 2pm to be told our room wasnt ready and could we wait in the lounge. 40 minutes later and we were still waiting, eventually a member of staff came over and asked if we would like tea or coffee (expecting it to be on the house) we said yes, then the staff member came over and handed us a receipt to be charged to our phantom room. Eventually I got a little frustrated waiting and went to the reception (after an hour of waiting) to ask when the room was going to be ready, the receptionist did say 'actually it is ready for you'. We were taken down to our room to find the bed hadnt actually been changed, i did ask the member of staff if the room had actually been touched by the housekeeping staff, to which she replied, 'im not sure i will check'. ten minutes later the girl returned with a housekeeping girl and we were taken back up to the lounge area while the room was serviced. Within two minutes of us waiting at the lounge we were told our room was now ready, i can only assume the pillow cases were changed and that was it. We sat in the room and mulled over the situation, while sitting there i noticed a few more cracks...the curtain area was full of cobwebs and there was a big stain on the wall (the rooms need a good spring clean and a lick of paint) We then decided to book somewhere else in York and explained the situation to the manager at the reception, the reason for the late check in was because they were busy the day before and didnt get to catch up on the rooms, to which i promptly replied 'that is not our problem and i dont see why we should of had to wait, it is a totally lame excuse'! The receptionist also said if we had told her sooner, we could of got a bottle of wine or something for the room... although we did say to her colleague who showed us in to the room the first time around that we werent happy and she did say she would discuss the situation with her manager...lack of communication between staff and manager...again not our problem. As this was a surprise and a special weekend, I was understandably really disappointed and upset to have this whole situation happen.

In conclusion, really bad customer service, no valid reason for having us waiting around and the room wasnt even cleaned.

Room Tip: Tip from me is do not stay here!! If you want to sight see around York, it will cost you £18 in a ta...

Group of 6 ladies booked for the overnight pamper package, spa very clean, lovely relaxing rooms but nowhere near enough sun loungers in pool area, 6 of us had to squash onto 3 & even then other guests were asking when we would be leaving so they could use them, felt very uncomfortable as there was nowhere else to sit unless you went back upstairs to the afternoon tea area. One of our party complained about her treatment being noisy from the tea room so unable to relax & the therapist acknowledged the comment but did nothing about it!
The hotel room couldn't be better, airy clean & the bed was so comfortable. Evening meal, absolutely delicious & top notch! Breakfast also was of a high standard & choice. All in all a great hotel let down by spa facilities, maybe because it was a weekend & too busy!

Plus points: Lovely, professional young staff, good breakfast with Tiptree jam etc. in glass jars, delicious cooked breakfast, lovely building, setting and grounds, lots of hot water, huge towels.

Minus points: dated room decor, black mould round bath, double bed which is far too small for most couples, (Premier Inn always have kingsize), duvet well past its sell-buy date, it kept sliding out of its cover which had no poppers or buttons, hard bed and pillows (polyester), but worst of all, we did not get to sleep till gone 2 due to doors slamming repeatedly and people talking loudly in corridor until 2 am. The sound proofing is non-existent in annexe which is of poor build quality. In the morning, we discovered that there was a fire door next to our room so we can only think that it was this door that kept slamming. No reply when rang reception at 1 am. In addition, our ground floor room in annexe had french windows to garden but no windows so room was hot and stuffy despite turning off heater.

Not a good night's sleep and no discount offered when we complained in the morning. As I say, the staff are young, very professional and very polite but they are being let down by the management.

Room Tip: Do not accept any room in annexe. The sound proofing is non-existent.

I stayed at The Parsonage with two friends for an overnight break to enjoy the spa facilities and a relaxed evening of good food whilst catching up. The hotel is set is some lovely grounds, is easy to find and although a bit dated now in it's decor, was clean and reasonably well equipped. There were plentiful supplies for tea and coffee making in the room, and nice toiletries in the bathroom.

However - we arrived at 1.30pm after our long journeys from opposite ends of the country to a somewhat frosty reception. Our rooms were not ready (fair enough, they do say from 2pm on the website) but rather than ask us if we had had a good journey, could they get us anything to eat or drink whilst we waited etc. we were simply shown a room where we could put our bags and told to sit in the lounge until they could deal with us. I asked for some coffee and tea - but this took over 25 minutes to arrive and once we had finished our drinks we assumed we could then make our way to our rooms - but no - they still weren't ready. No explanations were offered as to the delay and unfortunately we couldn't go direct to the spa as that would have required a complete repacking of our bags to find our swimsuits! (Helpful hint - pack swimsuit in a separate bag next time!). We finally got taken to our rooms sometime after 3pm. I was frustrated to have lost an hour of my afternoon in the spa waiting around.

The afternoon in the spa was a wonderful experience - all very clean and fresh and the lady on reception was charming. Our afternoon tea was good - albeit the cakes were squares of tray bakes, rather than the refined dainties I had hoped for - but they were fresh and plentiful.

But yet again - our experience in the evening when we came down for dinner was mixed. We had rung down to book our table for 8.15. On arrival at reception we were 'parked' in the corner of the bar - but no menus given nor any order for pre-dinner drinks taken (and there was no one manning the bar). We sat and waited for a good ten to fifteen minutes before we were brought the menus, and even then no mention was made of 'can I get you a drink'. We were shown to our table around 9pm. The meal was good - but it is a limited menu (even if you include the a la carte). The wrong bottle of wine was brought first of all which thankfully we spotted. We were happy to have a leisurely meal but we were the last people left in the restaurant before we got our deserts - the couple on a neighbouring table gave up waiting for theirs having given their order some time before us.

Our rooms were over in the Coach House - which is convenient for the spa, but some distance to walk in the pouring rain to get to the main hotel for breakfast and dinner. There were no umbrellas we could use and poor lighting so I managed to get a soaked foot by stepping in a puddle on my way to dinner.

Overall - this is a good hotel - it has great facilities with the spa, a beautiful location so I can see how good it would be for weddings. The food was good - not wow - but tasty and well presented. But - there are a few areas where they could improve. It has a touch of the Basil Fawlty about it where the customer is made to feel like an inconvenience or that they are getting in the way of the staff by just being there. The greeting on arrival could have been vastly improved - and information about where to go for breakfast, dinner, do we need to reserve a table etc given out and generally made to feel welcome and comfortable! Likewise at checkout - rather than just take the money it would have been nice to have been asked if we had enjoyed our stay. This needs attention - it should be the whole experience that makes the guests feel welcome, special, and totally relaxed not just in the spa!
