Second visit this year, not disappointed. From the moment we arrived to our departure we were looked after so well by all the staff at Matfen Hall.
The awards the hotel have won for the 'Library Restaurant' are thoroughly deserved. Delicious food, beautifully presented.
Rooms very comfortable (ours was a Classic room, booked as a deal through 'Secret Escapes').well appointed and spotless.
Looking forward to going again in 2014.

Room Tip: We were in room 49, spacious, quiet - overlooked churchyard.

After a visit with friends around 9 months ago, my wife and I visited for four days to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We enjoyed our first visit but this was even better. All the food was excellent. Service by everyone could not be faulted. Christmas decorations we're ing put up and they looked spectacular. OK it is not cheap but if you want to spoil anyone special, then this is just the place to do it.y

Room Tip: Every room looks good.

If you like visiting stately homes, then you will love this building. Eating breakfast in the library was very enjoyable, with a good selection and a great view over the golf course and into the distant hills. This isn't your ordinary new-build, but a lovely old building with lots of character and quirkiness. Nice touch is a fridge in the bedroom. We'd definitely go again. Ideal for touring Northumberland, close to Hadrian's Wall. Swimming pool excellent, open till 9 p.m.

Room Tip: As it's a stately home, you may find two or three unexpected stairs getting into your room, so i...

Attended as wedding guest, didn't stay overnight. Great wedding venue. Excellent meal but portions a bit on small side. Didn't use any hotel facilities so can't comment. Drinks prices reasonable for a hotel. Golf course looked great, and overlooked from conservatory. Great place to pop in for coffee/afternoon tea!

We booked one night through secret escapes which included bed, breakfast and £32 towards your evening meal (per person). Upon arrival all staff are friendly and helpful. The pool area and spa facilities are open until late and very clean. Our room was a classic room but with a modern bathroom and a massive bed. We were probably the youngest couple there (we are both early 20s) but all were welcoming.

I must say the evening meal was better than anywhere we had eaten before. Fine dining at its best! Amazing! Recommend to anyone who fancies a picturesque comfortable night away!

We got this stay as part of a discount deal so were apprehensive as to the attitude of the staff, but we were pleasantly surprised. We were welcomed warmly, our room smelt of smoke from the customers before and they were so good at rectifying the problem. In every department there was not one member of staff who we had anything negative to say about, they were fantastic and extremely accommodating.
The pool and spa were excellent, the room was beautiful (apart from the fact that our view from our tiny window was of the top of the spa roof) and the surroundings were outstanding, the only negative was the meal which we had in the conservatory dining room. It was far too expensive and you didn't get enough food to warrant the price, just eat out instead.
We will definitely be staying here again.
