“A perfect midweek break”
Reviewed 28 November 2013

As a birthday surprsise for my wife (a real 'foodie') I booked a one night midweek dinner, bed and breakfast break to Matfen Hall. Although it was a 150 mile journey each way, I was convinced to book by the sheer number of excellent reviews - and suffice to say we were not disappointed in any way. The location is superb and the staff are very friendly and thoroughly professional, but not in any way intrusive. Our room was spotless and our evening meal in the Library restaurant was extremely good and imaginative. The Library is very impressive with the traditional very high ceilings and tables far enough apart to provide suitable privacy for everyone. Breakfast was also excellent. Although it was a long way to travel for a one-night stay, we were both so impressed that we plan to return in 2014. Totally recommended without hesitation.

First visited Matfen when looking for a wedding venue in 2006; subsequently married there in 2007 and have been back several times since, most recently for an overnight stay, with dinner, as a treat with my husband. Love everything about this hotel, except that they do eventually make you go home at the end of the stay and I waste considerable time trying to think of a way to move in permanently with nobody noticing... Have never met a member of staff who was less than charming in all my visits, and they all go out of their way to make you feel special. Add delicious food, lovely rooms and the spa and it's pretty much perfect.

Room Tip: Room 36 was full of character but the beams might not be so good for tall people!

Such a lovely historic hotel ,well maintained ,with very friendly staff who were all most courteous and efficient.Breakfast ,as many reviewers have said already, was of excellent quality and a great experience sitting in the library room.Even when there was a delay in finding a table due to so many guests appearing at the same time the staff worked their socks off to accomodate us as soon as was possibe. We will return most certainly someday in the future.Thank you.

Room Tip: We stayed in a room in the older part of the building.

Booked a one night break, dinner bed and breakfast with Travel Republic. Was allocated a double room which was in the new part of the hotel. Lovely room, Patio doors leading onto a furnished balcony ( to cold to use, pity ) two comfortable chairs, massive bed and large flat screen TV, with sky sports channels. Made use of the excellent spa before a pre dinner drink. Evening three course meal was faultless. All in all a great stay. Would recommend.

It's hard to imagine a better evening than that we recently spent at Matfen Hall. The Hall itself is mightily impressive. The view from the front of the hotel across the beautifully manicured and landscaped golf course with its magnificent specimen trees is wonderful - especially when the sun is going down and the shadows lengthen across the lakes and lovely little bridges. As you enter the Hall you really feel like you're going somewhere special and once you get inside it doesn't disappoint. The Conservatory is relaxed, light and airy, a perfect place to take in those evocative views and ideal for pre-dinner drinks. We'd been a bit concerned that the hotel's much vaunted Library restaurant might be a bit overly formal and stuffy but we couldn't have been further from the mark. It's certainly grand in the majestically authentic way that only old stately halls can be, with its enormously high ceilings, huge full length windows and its lavishly leather book-lined walls - but the staff are warm, friendly, welcoming and helpful. They made us feel at home from the minute we set foot in the place and were brilliant throughout - attentive but not in your face and more than happy to chat if you wanted. The food was every bit as good as we'd hoped for - expensive but very tasty. We were given a little cray fish sushi as a gratis appetiser and while sushi is not really my thing I found it to be delicious. Our starters, main courses and wine were all equally excellent. We noticed that most of the other diners (about 20 or so) all seemed to be thoroughly enjoying their meals too. After our meal we took our drinks into the Drawing Room, sat by the roaring open fire and leafed through a big and interesting Blackett family album about the opening and development of the hotel. When we left the hotel the sky was full of stars - the hotel is not quite in the dark sky area of Kielder but it's more than far enough from the City lights to make for a marvellous starry finale to a wonderful night.

Had a wonderful night in the hotel, used the pool in the morning and was pleased with that too. Corridors where a little dirty though for a 4 star hotel. Apart from it was amazing. Will be going back at some point.

We cannot speak too highly of this hotel. We stayed for the first time as wedding guests in May and have now been back to stay on three occasions and looking forward to our next visit.
The location is spectacular in the heart of the Northumberland countryside.
The staff are friendly and very helpful.
Rooms well appointed with safe, fridge and robes.
Food is excellent both in the Library restaurant and the conservatory
Cannot think of anything negative to say about Matfen Hall
