“Very enjoyable meal.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 April 2014

We went for a drive out and decided to visit Matfen Hall for lunch only. Although disappointed that the main restaurant wasn't open we decided to try the Conservatory meals (which I presume come from the same kitchen). Suffice to say we weren't disappointed. The sirloin steak was beautifully cooked and this was followed by the renowned old favourite - sticky toffee pudding. A very pleasant experience and certainly well worth a visit. The staff are young but appear to be very competent and polite. There are ample parking spaces very close to the hall entrance. It can be very relaxing to stroll around the grounds and admire the surrounding area.

Room Tip: Unless you want to savour the ambience of eating in the up-market restaurant you can save a few poun...

We had a lovely relaxing stay. The room was very spacious and very comfortable.

All the staff throughout our say were very courteous and most helpful with a very friendly relaxing manner. Nothing seemed to be a problem.
We dined in for the two nights we were their and what an excellent dining surprise we had both nights. The food was excellent and had a great wine list to compliment the food.

Overall a great stay and would highly recommend this hotel to anybody traveling to that part of the country.

If you wish to be treated with true professional TLC then Matfen Hall is an excellent place to be.
Even though there have everything you would need to have a relaxing stay, with the leisure & spa facilities available, we did not need to use them as we found the warmth and immaculate kept room and the serenity of the grounds and surrounding area a total relaxing experience.
The meals were of exceptional quality, both evening meal and breakfast and worthy of the AA rosette award the restaurant carries.
We wish to congratulate and thank the accompany of staff involved with our stay, for an unforgettable experience.

My wife and I recently returned to Matfen Hall to celebrate our wedding anniversary and we remained as impressed as our previous visit. The location is perfect for walks in the country, particularly Hadrians Wall, and offers golf and fishing which we have yet to do. With excellent food, outstanding staff and comfortable surroundings we find the setting relaxing and tranquil. Perhaps our one negative is that areas of the spa, which is free to guests, are looking a little dated (also didn't seem to work properly?) and would benefit of a refurb. That said, the pool, steam room and jacuzzi add an extra bonus at the end of the day. All things considered a great place to stay.

Room Tip: Rooms on the back of the hall sometimes lose mobile phone signal.

For my first ever mother's day, my husband treated me and my mother in law to afternoon tea in the drawing room. We had read reviews on the internet, and the menu on the website looked good with a wide selection of sandwiches. On arrival, we were presented with our menus. My mother in law had a different menu with the full sandwich selection as outlined on the Matfen website, while the options on my menu and my husband's were rather less inspiring. Unfortunately our waiter confirmed that our menus were correct and the more interesting alternative sandwiches on my mother in law's menu (and the website) were no longer available. We ordered three afternoon teas and one champagne afternoon tea. Tea for four arrived, but only three afternoon teas. There were no members of staff permanently in the drawing room, so chasing up the order did prove difficult, and the waiter had to go and check with the chef which took a bit of time. The fourth afternoon tea did eventually arrive, but no champagne - and we again had to go and hunt staff to rectify this. We also had to request extra jam and cream for the fourth tea as they didn't automarically bring extra with it. Not the levels of service we would have expected from such a venue. The sandwiches were at best average, but rather dull. The scones were delicious - the best I have had at an afternoon tea. The cakes were average but the chocolate tart was excellent - so overall the cakes were not disappointing. The pots of tea seemed small given they were to share between two - we got a cup each then needed to search out staff to request a top up. The setting itself was fantastic - a relaxed room, with a fireplace and cosy sofas. However I do not feel I would recommend this afternoon tea, given the poor service and uninspired sandwich selection. Given the price and the venue, my expectations were not met and it was a disappointing first mother's day treat

Our Hotel room was modern and nicely decorated with the most comfy bed and beautiful bathroom. The only issue which I had with the room was the clock on the church which was chiming every hour. I cant comment if it did this during the night, but it woke me up at 6am and continued on for the rest of the morning. Breakfast was great.

Now for the Spa.....

The staff at the Spa need to get customer service skills urgently, they were so miserable, not willing to help and made you stand at reception for ages. When they did speak to you it was an effort, I don't know if they were more willing to help those who were members. My partner had an issue with his locker in the changing room and the gentleman at the spa reception didn't do anything to assist.

The pool area is in urgent need for a makeover, it is so so dated. Paint peeling from the sides, and hardly any loungers. The Jacuzzi is tiny, and if there is a couple of people in you wouldn't really want to go in, some people take ages as well in leaving. For anyone who has difficulties walking up stairs, the lift in the spa area is out of order and to be honest I think it should be removed as it looks disgusting. Sauna and salt rooms are tiny, you would only get three people in at a push. Nobody from the spa showed us around, I got the impression they didn't like people from the Hotel entering. The photos which Matfen show to advertise the spa are shocking, as they are so edited to make the place look nicer.
