We stayed for one night at Matfen Hall for my wifes birthday.

The hotel staff were welcoming and friendly.

We made use of the pool and spa facilities. They were clean, but in need of a little freshening up which I believe was due to happen shortly after our visit.

The room was lovely, more of a junior suite so nice and spacious.

The biggest plus for me was the restaurant. The food was delicious. The staff were brilliant, attentive but not over the top. It isn't the cheapest in the world but you get what you pay for so can't fault anything about it.

Chose this hotel for proximity to Hadrian's wall and other history sites. But it had other benefits such as Champion golf course, spa and great surroundings.
Bedrooms to good standard and quiet. Food to a good quality, especially in the Lodge. Staff were friendly and efficient.
Would highly recommend.

Room Tip: Rooms at rear of hotel were quiet.

Lovely setting. Great back massage. Fantastic evening meal with great choice on the menu. Attentive staff. Disappointing breakfast though, waiting staff were confused as to who had ordered what. When the full breakfast arrived it was distinctly minimalist! Overall though clean, polite staff, lovely surroundings.

As a party of 4 (2 couples) we had a thoroughly enjoyable experience at the beautiful Matfen Hall staying for 2 nights. We had deluxe rooms in the main hall which were clean and well furnished with large bathrooms.
The staff at the hotel were friendly and keen to help their guests. We ate both nights in the Library restaurant and found the food to be of a good standard and reasonably priced for the type of venue.
The three 9 hole golf courses were all in excellent condition and very well presented. The only slight disappointment on our stay was that not all the spa facilities were available due to maintenance, however to be fair we were made aware of this prior to travel. All in all we had a really great time and would reccomend this venue.

This is a lovely hotel which we have visited quite a few times and always enjoy it greatly, but this is the first time reviewed. Every care is taken by the staff to make your stay as pleasant as possible. All the rooms we have stayed in have been very comfortable but this time we were fortunate enough to be in a Premier room which was outstanding and an experience to treasure. Golf facilities are very good: in fact all the hotel facilities are first class. Dining in the historic Library restaurant is another great experience. Food is first class, and service is very friendly. Can't wait to go back!

We stayed for 1 night only as we were passing through the area but wanted to stay in a nice location at a good hotel.

The hotel is in a very pretty village and the golf course and grounds are stunning. We arrived on a very sunny evening which probably helped and sat outside.

The room was very nice, perhaps a bit smaller than I had hoped but it was comfortable and clean. We did have some noise from the guest upstairs walking about their room at 1am which was annoying but not the hotel's fault. There are some very nice public rooms within the hotel, the library and lounge rooms have that nice old feel to them and if we had stayed longer I would have enjoyed spending an hour or so in the lounge to catch up on my reading. We intended to use the spa area but in the end didn't have time to do so (partly as the weather was so nice outside).

The staff service was very friendly during check in/check out.

Our only real frustration came at breakfast time. The sign when you arrive for breakfast states 'wait to be seated', this wait was for more than 2 minutes without sign of anyone prepared to show us where to sit. Once seated we had to wait a further few minutes before anyone asked us for our breakfast order. After our order was taken we noted that we hadn't been asked if we wanted tea/coffee and toast so I had to call someone over to ask for coffee and toast. The coffee arrived (in a noticably smaller pot than those of the tables around us) with no milk and no toast. At this point we had two clearly empty bowls on the table from our cereal, so had expected these to be cleared away but the waiter left us without removing them. We were then brought our milk, there was still no toast and again the empty bowls were not taken away. So I asked again about the toast, this time to another waiter who I hoped would be more efficient. Our breakfast order then arrived and at this point they also removed one of the empty bowls?! The breakfast itself it has to be said was tasty and enjoyable (as had the food from the self service table) so we didn't have too much problem with the food itself. My wife had ordered eggs florentine and was however slighly disappointed at the minimal hollandaise sauce that went with it but assumed that this was just the way they served it, that was until we noticed that a lady at a nearby table had the same order presented to her with a jug with the sauce in it, we weren't sure why the presentation of the breakfast would be different unless she had specified extra sauce in advance. Notably there was still no toast and at this point we didn't have the enthusiasm to ask again. We just felt very disappointed and felt that we had been neglected by the majority of the staff and had received a 2nd rate service. They were busy but it felt that others around us recieved a better service than we did.

I've swayed between going with a rating of 3 or 4 but having now typed this up I feel that the breakfast experience has tainted my view of the hotel and would make me feel unsure if I would book to stay at Matfen Hall again. I guess in considering giving a 4 I hope that ours was an infrequent bad experience but hopefully other guests can prove if this is the case.

Stayed here for a birthday and didn't get told the spa was out of order, had to find out as I went to the spa The spa was far from a spa, could have gone to my local swimming baths. Dust on bedside table in the room and chocolate and make up all over the remote. Breakfast lady couldn't under stand us as we asked for coffee, not tea. small portions at breakfast too. Carpets were stained and dated. Stayed at 'Slaley Hall' the night after this as I was that disappointed. Will never return to this hotel. Receptionist wasn't very welcoming and also manager was useless after complaining about our 2 night stay. Only thing that was good was the bed and the room size. Definitely not worth the stars given and especially what I paid.

Dear Guest

I am sorry you were disappointed with your recent stay at Matfen Hall and as you will see from the majority of our reviews, this is certainly not the 'norm'.

We are currently installing a new thermal suite within our spa and whilst the benefits of doing this will be fantastic, unfortunately some disturbance to the facility whilst doing so is inevitable. We have been contacting all guests in advance of their stay to inform them of the work being carried out and I apologise if you did not receive this information.

Our Breakfast Supervisor is French, but her English is very good, so I am surprised by your comments.

Thank you for your feedback.

Yours sincerely
