Stayed one night on a spa break, included a treatment and dinner in the print room restaurant.
Our room was comfortable and very clean. Nice view across to the church and so quiet and peaceful. The spa has just had a refurbishment so as expected all elements were in good order and the pool was lovely and warm. Therapists were every nice and I had an elemis facial which was very relaxing.
The evening meal was good but having eaten in he restaurant in the past I would say a recent change in chef is evident and the portions were small for the price and the food did not deliver on flavour or imagination either although well presented. I was looking forward to dessert but to be honest there was nothing out of the ordinary to get exited about, I chose baked blueberry cheesecake and it was boring. In the past there has been a much better choice of food that was imaginative and felt like value for the price. Matfen seem to have trouble holding on to chefs so consistency is not guaranteed.
Breakfast was good which was a relief as I was ready for it.
Overall a nice hotel if a little pricey, would consider B&B and take the evening meal in the keepers lodge in site or in the conservatory where you can get nice salads, fish and chips etc.

Room Tip: Choose a room in the new wing if possible,

I booked a room here due to attending a wedding reception. The grounds and the building itself were spectacular. I was blown away by the history of it all and wanted to go exploring. The food at the reception and the breakfast the next morning was very, very nice.

During the reception. we were suffering with headaches and we were directed to a ladies toilet where a machine was located to buy some nurofen. The machine rejected all coins so we asked a male member of staff if there were machines in the mens toilets with nurofen and if he could get us some if we gave him the money. We were laughed at and told that he doesn't think there is. He didn't even offer to find out either to be certain or offer to find out why the machine wasn't accepting any money.

We had early check in at 12 however it was a case of quickly getting changed once getting in the room and then driving to the church as the wedding was at 1pm. The next morning, we got to really check out our room. It was very hot due to the weather and even with the window wide open and a fan on, it was unbearable. After speaking with other guests, it seemed we were the only one who had a problem with the heat as their rooms were a lot cooler. The water pressure of the shower was very poor, you couldn't wash your hair in it and even with the shower being on the hottest temperature it would go to, it was only luke warm. The water wasn't draining away so we took the plug out of the bath completely and it didn't drain at all. We spent about an hour and a half away from the room with breakfast and speaking with other guests before checking out and when we got back to the room it had finally drained. The bathroom smelt of urine and it became apparent this was from the shower curtain which was a deep yellow at the bottom and it stank! We also found rubbish in the room at the sides of the bed. We only found this out because we had dropped something on the floor which rolled to the bed.

I paid £170 (this was with wedding discount) for this room and I am deeply disappointed. I expected more for a room of this price and because of where it is at and it was apparently a deluxe. On the website when you look at the wedding part, it states that all guest rooms would be next to the Great Hall where the reception was taking place. Our room was on the other side of the hall. I was the first person to book a room for the wedding which was confirmed from the bride and groom so it can't be an excuse of there being no rooms left.

We booked our stay through a discount website which made this stay excellent value for money. We were then upgraded on arrival free of charge which made it even better - guaranteed to put a Yorkshireman in a good mood.

The Room:
========
Couldn’t really fault this – if I was being really picky the fabric headboard was ready for a more thorough clean.
Separate bath and shower.
We stayed in one of the balcony rooms. The balcony overlooks outbuildings and then towards the church. A pleasant but not a stunning view, and you’re not going to get a lot of privacy if adjacent guests use their balcony at the same time – would benefit from a little screening between each balcony.

Spa:
====
Decent sized pool and range of sauna & steam rooms. It was quiet when we used the facilities and we felt like we almost had the place to ourselves.

Dining
=====
The hotel sensibly provides additional informal dining by the golf course if you’re on a budget or want a more relaxed experience. We managed to watch Wimbledon on the big screen whilst enjoying some decent ‘pub-grub’.

Good cooked breakfast with quality ingredients.

Staff
===
Friendly and ‘switched-on’.
Check in and out was a breeze.

Location
=======
Website shows it off well - beautiful.

Would I come back again? – Definitely, if the price was right.

Have to say the surroundings and the hotel were great...but if your going here and not golfing or using the spa it is waaaaay overpriced so look elsewhere.This place based on bed and breakfast,which is what we did (we were eating away from the hotel at night) is overpriced. We have stayed in nicer places at half the price...far better rooms and breakfast, well, if you consider 2 bacon,1 sausage, a tomato, 5 tiny mushrooms, and an egg....Full English...have fun.The surroundings at breakfast were nice but I paid for food not scenery (180 pounds for 1 night) the continental was average and toast weirdly cooked on one side.Overall 6/10
