We like to try different pubs/restaurants on our holidays and some recent guests at the cottage that we stayed at had mentioned the Wheatsheaf and recommended booking. So we called up for a 7:30 meal and were told that 7:30 had gone but 7:00 or 7:15 was OK, so we went for the 7:15 slot. We got there at 7:15 and then ended up waiting in the bar until just past 8, so I'd had a couple of beers before going through to the restaurant area and wasn't best pleased with the wait - although the draft beer was good and they obviously take care of it. But the meal was very, very good. Choice of courses is 'limited' - about 7 or 8 of each - but that usually means that they are all pretty good and that was definitely the case here. I had the best chicken and bacon pie with chips that I've ever had. The pie had obviously been cooked to order rather than stuck in a tureen and heated up and the chunky chips were properly deep fried rather than 'oven chips' or 'fries'. My wife had a meal off the specials board - Chicken Normandie - which was also beautifully cooked and the accompanying vegetables were also freshly cooked. For dessert we split a selection of 3 mini dishes and they were also freshly prepared and were very good. The meal was excellent and very reasonably priced. A nice little pub which the locals obviously use for drining - and eating! I would recommend eating here if you want a change from Whitby.

We came for an early dinner with our children. Nice friendly welcome. The pub area is small but lovely. I found the restaurant a little cold. We had 3 courses and all were lovely. My husband had lamb kidneys and I had scallops for starters - both excellent. Our main courses were good with lovely veggies and the best chips I've had in ages. Good choice children's menu as well. Puds were very good as well. Reasonable price for excellent food.

Wife and I had Sunday lunch. Beef was nice and rare and the small portions of 8 different veggies were all fresh and perfectly cooked - especially the white beetroots. For the £10 price it could not have been bettered.
But it was. The apple crumble with real vanilla ice cream was superb and worth our 50 mile drive. The apple was still in discernible pieces with a bit of a bite and nothing like the mush that most places serve in crumbles. Cant wait for the rhubarb season
And the really good news. The place was full for 2 sittings at lunch and about 30 people were turned away.

Having recently eaten at the Wheatsheaf Inn, a compliment to the chef is certainly deserved. Both my boyfriend and I thoroughly enjoyed the evening, our meals were simply excellent!
Thank you and we will certainly spread the word that, the Wheatsheaf Inn is by far the best in our local area!

Went here for lunch on Saturday......we were very happy - food excellent. I had a soufle which was superb - their homemade chips are fantastic. All ingredients were fresh, sauces to die for. Would highly recommend.

Children grown up...starting to have a life....decided to book a few weekends away.
I am so pleased to have found the gem at Egton. Recently re-furbished into a three bedroomed self contained cottage or three B&B Bedrooms, it was absolutely delightful.
Elaine and Nigel the owners of this property are so hard working and make you feel really welcome and want you to enjoy your stay there. The rooms were lovely, as was the farmhouse kitchen where you can go down and help yourself to drinks etc and also use the sitting area which is tastefully decorated...all this and in a pub and restaurant to boot!! Heaven!!! Please do not stay and not book a table, as the food was outstanding....The starters, mains and puds were all cooked to perfection. The pub is only small but the locals were so pleasant and made us feel so welcome. We went down to breakfast the next morning only to find Log fires lit, breakfast served in the farmhouse kitchen, sunday papers of choice...Nothing was too much trouble.
Because of this, I am hoping to return and book the cottage for our family. A Big thank you to Nigel and Elaine.
