We booked the cottage next to the pub with friends of ours (4 adults; 4 children) and from start to finish the weekend was simply fantastic. We were very warmly welcomed on Friday night and we didn't even have to walk outside to get to the pub for a few excellent pints of Landlord before tea. The kids settled in immediately and made straight for the den (bunk room). Saturday was a great day out at Whitby with fish and chips for lunch and a relaxing afternoon at the cottage followed by a few games of pool before tea. Sunday morning we went to Robin Hoods Bay for a blast of sea air then back for Sunday lunch at the pub which was superb in every aspect - an amazing amount of different vegetables! The highlight (for me) was not being rushed out of the cottage on Sunday afternoon and being able to bring a pint through from the pub to watch the England rugby match in the comfort of the cottage in front of a roaring open fire. All in all a FANTASTIC weekend and we will be back! Thanks.

Forget the building and the countryside; forget the perfectly kept real ale; forget the fires, the fishing paraphernalia and the hunting trophies. This place is made by the staff! Nigel and Elaine have built a team around them that ooze confidence but with a mildness and gentle serenity that is overwhelmingly welcoming. You immediately feel as if you have returned to a place that is home from home. All the finite details just finish the whole package. Elaine's cooking is sumptuous, the menu is consistent and everything is delicious; Nigel is a cracking host behind the bar, a kind word and a never ending supply of tales.
The list can go on, but just go and enjoy it. My word, it's up there with my all time favourite places to stay.

We visited this restaurant when staying near York. Restaurant review only.

Following a long and scenic drive over the North York Moors we arrived at the picture-postcard village of Egton just as it started snowing.

We settled in to the warm and cosy surrounding and enjoyed a sumptuous, yet great value meal. My vegetarian girlfriend found that it catered well for her, and I thoroughly enjoyed the grouse. An absolute must when in season.

The staff were very friendly and the service was attentive and subtle.

If you can, reserve a table by the windows near the bar as this offers an even cosier setting than the main restaurant area.

The journey back was quite eventful as the snow had caused a bit of a tailback getting back over the Moors. Highly recommended, even if staying some distance away!

We were in Egton on a freezing day looking for somehere to get a coffee and warm up my friend mistakenly tried the Wheatsheaf's door not realizing it was over half an hour before opening time. The door was opened and we were welcomed into a gorgeous little room and placed before a roaring fire. Bottomless cafeteires of very good coffee and mini stollen appeared and only £1.75. We will be back, at correct opening time next time :) And hopefully will indulge in something off the lovely looking food menu. Highly recommend.

We stopped here for a late lunch and had a very enjoyable high quality meal the choice was good and well priced. I had pork belly which was delicious my husband had a angus beef burger and several of our party had various other items which were all cooked to perfection with lovely fresh seasonal vegetables. We had to squeeze a pudding in and they were fantastic our waiter was friendly and professional. We would definitely return on our next visit to whitby
