“What a find!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 July 2014

We turned up at 1.45 after a rather wet walk on the moors. Sadly the kitchen had closed for lunch, but the owner happily organised great sandwiches and then to compensate for us missing lunch offered us delightful trios of mini desserts and coffee. Our visit to the Wheatsheaf was a rare example of outstanding customer service. The warmth of the welcome, delicious and imaginitive food and a landlord more than happy to go the extra mile made a refreshing change. An outstanding example of the great british pub. We will certainly come back to try the legendary Sunday lunches! Thank you, to all at the Wheatsheaf.

“Simply outstanding!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 July 2014 via mobile

We turned up at the pub without booking around 1.30pm and the welcome was lovely, really friendly guy behind the bar who happily showed us to our table (7 of us)

The staff couldn't have been more friendly and nothing at all was a trouble. Menu was perfect for what we wanted.

I really recommend the fish stew, wonderful!!

My wife was going to get the steak pie but isn't keen on kidney "no problem, we make it fresh so I'll just leave out the kidney" was the reply from the chef. Great!!

Food was hot, fresh and perfect! Kids had homemade lasagne and fresh burger. Again, great value.

Cannot say much more other than give it a try!! We'll be back on our next visit from Australia!

“Outstanding Sunday Lunch”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 June 2014

Vegetarians rejoice - a restaurant that serves a proper roast for non-meat eaters, a superb nut roast, really flavourful, with its own gravy and Yorkshires. Meat choices were also thoroughly enjoyed. All were served with a wonderful array of vegetables, think I counted ten either separate or in combinations, along with beautifully crisp roast potatoes. The desserts were so tempting that we were unable to resist and all were gorgeous. The staff were attentive, very pleasant and friendly and well versed in menu options. I think this was the best Sunday lunch out we have had for a very long time - maybe ever. Highly recommend.

“Excellent food and service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 May 2014 via mobile

Absolutely lovely people here who serve great food and good ales. Would highly recommend this place. We rang half hour ahead and waited no time at all for our table. We were made so welcome on arrival. Everything was cooked home cooked and imaginative. Thanks for a lovely evening. Best meal of our holiday.

“Top notch restaurant food at pub prices”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 May 2014

We headed out to Egton with our dog, having heard the Wheatsheaf allowed pooches in the bar. It does - but does not normally serve food there. Happily, the landlord kindly took pity on us and brought some menus. Hoo boy, are we pleased he did.
T'other half had belly pork from the specials menu and I had shoulder of lamb in masala, bacon and mushroom sauce. Wow - both were stunning and served with an array of fresh veg, but the sauces were out of this world. Sorry - I can't remember the exact ingredients, but it was out of this world; the meat (from Radford's in Sleights) was melt-in-the-mouth.
Servings were huge and came in at under £27 for the two and - believe me - this is restaurant quality at the price you pay for fish and chips in some Whitby restaurants. I would rate this food more highly than Ditto in Whitby.
Too stuffed for a pudding, but we will be back. We may even leave the dog at home.
