We have recently returned having stayed one night on a Travelzoo deal. The staff were very welcome when we went for our evening meal but it was strange on arrival for no-one to be there to book you in instead there was a key and a welcome letter telling you which room we were in. We were in the stable block and the room was ok, if a little dark although once we went to bed the room was filled with light from the emergency light above the door! Whilst there was a good supply of everything is tea, coffee, biscuits, toiletries etc we did find the bathroom was all a bit tired. Having looked at the Inn's website wre were really looking forward the food especially having seen the menus online. We were disappointed that we were given different menus (perhaps this was because we were on a two course deal). I had venison which was OK but all there was with it was cabbage with a few girolle mushrooms. Included in the deal was prosecco wine but as teetotallers we had a much cheaper soft drink so we were surprised on checking out to find we had been charged for two teas we had at the end of the meal! What I will say was that the breakfast was excellent. I've seen replies from the owners on this site saying you should complain at the time but to be honest we were not aware of who was in charge of this establishment. Perhaps a questionnaire in the room would be a good idea.

We stayed here for 2 nights when attending a nearby wedding. There were 5 of us in 3 rooms and we had similar experiences and comments.
Firstly the good - a traditional Inn in a lovely quiet backwater. Our room had a lovely view over the valley. The room had a decanter of sherry as well as tea-making facilities.
Our party all commented that the rooms were in need of some decoration and our bathroom was decidedly 80's with carpeted floor, shower door that was losing its seals, towel rack loose on the wall and a shower mixer that leaked very hot water on your hand as you went to turn it off. Clearly maintenance has been overlooked.
We ate in the restaurant the first night and were not impressed with the food / portions / price. Breakfast on the first morning produced curdled milk and tea that was not made with hot, let alone, boiling water. All was rectified but shouldn't have happened.
Breakfast on the second morning produced a kipper that was, at the same time, both burned and raw.
From the awards and reviews we were expecting far better and it did not deliver value for money, all the more disappointing as our stay was not cheap.

Room Tip: Jade - good outlook but tired.

Just a quick snack..........my husband had a wonderful beef sandwich with crisps and salad.
I opted for a starter the pigeon breast with black pudding. It was fantastic, a pesto of dreams and the bits of apple complemented the dish. The service was fast and polite. All the staff were excellent.
We sat outside as it was a wonderful day, but the garden was so neglected and this a top hotel.
This let down the wonderful setting.

Arrived after three and check in closed but instructions as to where room was and key available we had Epsom room in the stable block across the road ...very quiet location no mobile signal though
Room was compact and clean and hot but it had been a very hot day.the shower door needs a replacement other than that it was really nice for the travelzoo offer we paid for.the meal was excellent well done chef....I had the fish and chips and they were the nicest chips I had ever eaten!!! The views are to die for from every angle a quiet secluded village ....excellent my husband enjoyed walking and I enjoyed relaxing.the staff in the restaurant were very courteous and we had to ask what time breakfast was as there was no info in our room at all....
Beds were comfy....I didnt like the green exit light in the room above the door as it made the room very light and you can't turn it off!!! Other than that it was excellent.
Breakfast was good and served with a smile....adequate as well.
At check out I did mention the fact that as no mobile signal and no information within the room about any emergency numbers to contact in case of anyone needing to see a doctor in the night??? And no phone in our room...but the girl told us that we should have had an info pack in our room..and will look into this for future...just worth a mention...but do visit and enjoy it as much as we did the food is five star the hotel/inn is not quite that but a eat deal and well worth the money
Well done we will recommend to our friends....but a new shower screen would make that room perfect...I almost got stuck in the shower !!!

Stayed for two nights on a good value Travelzoo deal and can't fault the value.Hawnby is beautiful, the Inn is characterful and the food was delicious on all occasions. The owners were preparing for a very large wedding so there was a bustle everywhere, but the staff were unfailingly relaxed and obliging; as regular guests we did not feel short-changed.Our room with its sprigged wallpaper and pine cone filled little fireplace was delightful, although if beige, bland and corporate floats your boat you may find it old-fashioned.Hospitality tray was well stocked, toiletries were good quality, wi-fi was free and worked fine in our room(Heather) .Loved the bathroom tiles! We are bookaholics and always appreciate places with lots of books and magazines scattered around. The owners even suggest you take them home if you can't finish them in time: a lovely offer.
Hope the wedding went well.Hope to return soon.A real treat in lovely weather in a gorgeous place. (also fell for the resident Labradors)

This is an excellent base for exploring the local area and beyond, located away from the man roads but still easy to get to, with great views. Food, drink and accommodation were all really good and we were made to feel very welcome.

Lovely views and courteous staff never compensate for poor fare coming from the kitchen , I'm afraid . Greasy fish with terrible chips ; a cremated venison burger in a wedge of ciabatta bread instead of the bun indicated on the menu and accompanied by more awful chips ; and a seafood salad which was dull and unappetising and came with - more chips !! . We didn't complain at the time as we were accompanied by an elderly parent who hates fuss so stumped up £40 for a really bad lunch and left . What a pity - it looked so promising , but not promising enough to make me return or recommend to ANYONE

Well dear me. As I always say to customers there is no point in complaining after the event if you don't deal with it at the time. We are very approachable people and would have done everything possible to solve your problem. Although your comments are only a matter of your opinion. As other readers will see we get a lot of very good comments about our quality food.
Might I just add all of the dishes you ordered come with chips, there is a range of other choices that didn't come with chips but that is what you ordered so that is what you were given.
Perhaps the elderly parent doesn't like you complaining as maybe they have heard it once to often - just a thought.
Anyway other readers if you EVER have a problem at our establishment please talk to us we are real people that like to solve issues not really hear the first thing about them on trip advisor.
