“Good, but reception needs organising!”
Reviewed 26 July 2012

Recently has a weekend at Tortworth Court Hotel celebrating a friends birthday. First, let me say that overall we had a wonderful time and the hotel itself was amazing.....apart from reception. When we checked in, we were told which room we had and where we would find it. After 30mins and asking numerous clueless staff on the way we finally found the room. It was in the new part of the hotel and what few signs there were were absolutely useless. We we finally got back to reception and I spoke to the manager, he produced a map from his pocket and said "you should have picked up one of these"! However, this aside, we could not fault the hotel and we will be returning. By the way, check you bill before you pay, we were overcharged by about £30.

We are pleased that the guest enjoyed their weekend at Tortworth Court and our reception team do try and give all our guest's a map of the hotel and grounds, we are sorry that on this occasion we did not supply the guest with all the information. We look forward to seeing this guest again.

Went on a Travelzoo special weekend but upgraded to a room in the main, older part of the house with a fabulous view over the gardens and three bottles of wine and chocs.

The hotel is huge with beautiful high ceilings and walls lined with bookcases. It has been extremely well renovated. Guests feel like they are not in a hotel but in someone's stately home.

Breakfasts were good, a better selection available on Sunday morning than Monday where there was little choice of cold meats, cheese and fresh fruit. However the evening meals were very good. Service was prompt and efficient. The menu changed each night and there was a lot of choice. The desserts were especially tasty.

The arbouretum was well worth walking through and was very well kept. The gardens were just glorious in the sunshine.

All in all an excellent stunningly beautiful hotel to stay in.

Room Tip: Get a room in the older part of the hotel with a view of the gardens. Rooms 36 or 37 are excellent.

The hotel was originally built as a private house in 1853 and we are pleased that our guest enjoyed not only their stay but also the walks in the Arboretum.

Appalling does not describe this

I booked a meal to entertain clients on the evening of 17th May in Moreton’s restaurant. Never ever again! We waited an hour for our starters, despite my complaining politely and quietly to the restaurant staff. People on an adjacent table had already started their main course but had arrived a lot later than my party. The starters were bland, and nothing at all to whet the appetite. We then waited nearly another hour for our main course, despite further complaints. When that main course arrived the steaks, served on wooden boards which were fashionable in 1970 were cold. I complained and was unbelievably told they were hot when they left the kitchen! There was absolutely no point at that stage, close to 10pm, to order anything else as an alternative.

The coffee was also cold, but by that stage all we wanted to do was leave. The restaurant manageress came with the bill which only took 15 minutes to arrive. She told me that in view of our disappointment (a gross understatement!) we would not be charged for the meal. I told her I was pleased about that because I would have refused to pay for it had I been asked to do so.

The manageress promised to e-mail me the following day. She did not so I assume it was out of sight out of mind. A few days later I telephoned the hotel manager. He did apologise and has since e-mailed me, but I am sure had I not telephoned it would all have quietly been swept under the carpet. He also offered me a complimentary meal for 4, which I might well have donated to charity, but that was not forthcoming either.

I have eaten at Tortworth Court on many occasions and have also booked business clients in over-night. I have seen the quality of service slide steadily downhill. A stunning edifice, but it is what happens inside which is of more importance. Never again. A local pub will produce better food and a lot better service.

What a wonderful hotel. The staff, the rooms, the food, the building itself, are all excellent. The building dates from the mid 1850's but feels older and the hotel have produced a history handout for those of us obsessed with the past. The gardens are extensive and well cared for with a number of trees, all of which have been labelled and I can thoroughly recommend a walk through the grounds.
There is an on site spa, pool and gym and, although the building has been extensively rebuilt and added to it has been done extremely sympathetically and it is very hard to "see the join".
It seems churlish to pick fault but i do have to say that the bed was a little hard for my liking and the mobile phone signal was patchy to say the least.
Will I stay here again? Oh yes, and soon!

Room Tip: Stay at this hotel - you'll love it!

Beautiful building and grounds, good food and wines decent room with decent staff. A few quibbles over the bill (part company account part cash) and found a pair of someone elses socks in the bedroom... Despite the quibbles I like the place and will be back again this week! Would recommend as a weekend retreat or for a spa break.

From the moment you enter the property taking the long driveway from the road to the hotel entrance, it is like another world. The feeling is as if you have been invited to someones fabulous home for a weekend. Everything about the hotel from Reception, to the rooms, the Bar the restaurant and the beautiful surrounding parkland are superb, and so relaxing. The hotel is not a budget establishment, but given the facilities, it is excellent value. The building have undergone extensive refurbishing but several features have been retained, for example the wood paneling in the restaurant which is just magnificent. All in all a great place to stay for few days break, a wedding or a company Group Hug Session. Like the TARDIS, the Tortworth Court takes you to another world and another time, but will all the modern trappings..

We stayed at this hotel on a Friday evening and didn't expect the hotel to be as busy as it was. This is our second visit to the hotel and still enjoyed as much as the first time. The hotel looks impressive as you arrive and the grounds are lovely to walk around. The hotel is kept up well and the rooms are comfortable. It is an old building so you can hear creeking and people in rooms above but there's not much you can do. The restaurant is good, the food is lovely with a good choice, the later it gets the slower the service as they get extremely busy but still all in good time. The breakfast was lovely with a good variety but again its good to miss the rush. Its in a good location just of the motorway but extremely close to the open prison. Would definately recommend this hotel the staff are polite and friendly, the hotel is nice, food is good & the pool is nice for a swim.
