“Pleasant village pub garden”
Reviewed 20 June 2014

We wanted a traditional pub lunch near Bishop Stortford and that is just what we got today. The bar was manned by a very organised manager and helpful barmaids and we were quickly seated and given menus. There was a good choice of reasonably priced dishes and plenty of seating both inside and in the large sunny garden. Both the meals were good, although the vegetable lasagna was a tad greasy. We finished with coffee which actually tasted like coffee, a rarity these days!

“Well that was a surprise!”
Reviewed 9 June 2014 via mobile

We accidentally came upon the Three Willows when travelling home from London and thought to try a village for a meal rather than endure the motorway services. And what a find!

Being big meat eaters, the mixed grill was awesome! The staff weren't fazed by our request for no chips but suggested, and delivered, a very nice salad instead! The cheese plate was huge - with apologies for having run out of cheddar there was still plenty of cheese on offer!

Now we know this is pretty much en route of a regular journey we will be happy to revisit!

“First Class Pub, so close to Stansted Airport.”
Reviewed 6 June 2014

We called at this pub while staying overnight near Stansted airport. It was just perfect in every way. Beautiful location, delightful interior and exterior. The food was delicious. The best we have had in an English pub. John, the landlord was so friendly and made us feel very welcome. The staff were very efficient. All in all a great pub with a wonderful atmosphere. Can well recommend to anyone visiting this area.
For sure we will be back again!

“If you have a couple of hours for lunch you will be delighted”
Reviewed 2 June 2014

What a great pub and so near to Stansted it is ideal for pre-flight food, our party of four ordered starters and main courses, a total of seven different dishes, and all were fantastic. Staff very friendly and towards the end of the lunchtime period it was nice when the chef came round the tables chatting and checking that all was well (the waiting staff had also done their customary check).

The quality, value and friendliness cannot be doubted but it did take nearly two hours from start to finish and the place was not that busy. For a lazy, friendly meal I can highly recommend a visit but if you have a deadline still go but give yourself plenty of time.

“A top-of-the-line English pub”
Reviewed 31 May 2014

This would be the best pub meal I have ever had - in pleasant spacious decor, with a manager who is committed to quality and courteous efficient staff.

What I liked about this pub and the meal is that it was very English without being in the least corny or pretentious - no fake patina. The interior looked mid-20th century and there were no fake beams - on any fakery at all. It was a good honest product. This is the sort of pub where locals really are regulars. There were no 'treats', nothing twee, nothing cute. Just good food, prompt service (very prompt), other patrons clearly satisfied and a relaxed atmosphere among the diners.

The food itself was excellent. I do hard physical work and prefer largish serves. The Three Willows must have seen me coming. I had the mixed grill which must have been 500-600 g (20 oz) and the grilled mushrooms were the best I have had and I will be trying to match them at home till I replicate their wonderful taste. The side salad was restaurant quality: all the greens were tasty and varied: there was no Iceberg lettuce thank goodness. The steak came as ordered.

The manager dropped by our table briefly and unobtrusively and gave the impression of enjoying his job and taking diners' views seriously.

The pub walls and mantle pieces are decorated with cricketing memorabilia, focusing on the manufacture of bats (from willow).

The prices were surprisingly low - I would have paid £10 more per head and still thought I'd had a bargain.

Not only will we return when we are in the area; we will make a point of being in the area so we can return.
