“Not 4 star but very good and value for money.”
Reviewed 3 January 2014

I stayed here january 2014 with 3 family members to attend relative's funeral.I must say I do not recognise some of the negative comments. I am a retired business executive and have eaten/stayed all over the country in different hotels. It does not pretend to be 4 star , it is an old building but bedrooms very comfortable and clean.WE ate in the restaurant on their specials menu and food was excellent well presented and well cooked. SErvice was impeccable.BReakfast was one of the best hotel full ENglish I have had for many years. The staff were very obliging, cheerful, nothing too much bother.AFter all the bad comments they are doing their utmost to turn this place around and on the evidence of our stay they are succeeding.ALL our family were impressed and no negative comments. This hotel is excellent value for money and was perfectly suited for our requirements .

I stayed here for business quite a few times during 2013. The decor is 'unique' (not bland; not modern; not old fashioned - a bit of an inbetween) and the furnishings in the bedrooms are comfortable. The beds and pillows are perfect for me - quite firm. Bathrooms a little in need of modernisation but the showers are powerful and the hot water plentiful. The staff are all very friendly and helpful and nothing is too much trouble. At breakfast, they sometimes seem a little rushed off their feet but they don't make it obvious. They seem to have to juggle between the restaurant and the reception at various times but if you find one in one area, they are always helpful and manage to sort you out in the other area! If you ask for a room overlooking the sea, then the experience is wonderful. Looking out over towards the supermarket is not so great. I like the place. It has personality as do the staff. I hate bland hotels. So if you are the same, you'll enjoy a stay here.

Room Tip: Ask for one overlooking the sea.

My girlfriend and I booked in to the hotel on a cold dark October night, as it was the only hotel nearby. On entering, we stood at reception for 10 minutes before I was forced to go into the bar to find someone who could check us in. We were met by the so called manager, who briskly told us that "she can't be in 2 places at once". After some persuasion we got our key for our double room which was mediocre at best, with 2 single beds pushed together and a dated interior.

We thought what the hell, as it was around 10 o clock we would order room service. After another 10 minutes on the phone trying to get someone to place our order with, we were informed that we had ten minutes left to order from the kitchen(if they only had to have answered 10 minutes before hand we would have 20 minutes to order, imagine that). I ordered a tower burger and chips, which arrived to the room quickly enough, the chips were freezing and the tower burger which was just a normal burger with 2 onion rings sitting on top was okay but the toasted bread was reheated.

The so called manager knocked and I went to open the door, she then informed me that I had kept her waiting a couple of minutes at the door. Which really annoyed me, as I only heard the door knock once.

This manager shouldn't be in hospitality, we found her moody, rude and in need of customer care training.

On the plus side, we were blown away by the view we were greeted with the next morning. It was beautiful, but the horrible customer service and second-rate food ruined our stay.

We were booked in for the following night but we decided to go somewhere else and found a beautiful cheap hotel in Brighton the UMI hotel on the promenade, which meant we had to pay for both hotels but to be honest we didn't mind, It was worth it.

Thank you for your comments. Please be assured that the staff member you describe will be re-trained to our high standards of friendliness and excellent customer services. Please also note this was NOT the manager who was off duty the day of your stay.

Yes, perhaps some of the decor is a bit tired but the friendliness and good value of this attractive sea-front hotel more than compensate. Personally, I would rather have friendly attentive staff, good food and reliable service than swanky bathrooms and ultra modern decor - and that is what the White Horse provides. The bedroom was serviceable, the bed comfortable and the bathroom and shower clean and in good working order. When we arrived, the tv was 'on the blink' but we phoned reception and within a couple of minutes a friendly young man had fixed the problem. (He later reappeared as our waiter at dinner.)
The hotel is on the sea front, has free parking and is well situated for exploring the coast or the downs.
We would certainly stay there again.

Room Tip: Rooms with sea view are likely to be quieter than those on the road side which will certainly get so...

Charming hotel built in 1930's right on the water. Comfy beds, good shower and if ur lucky enough to get a room by the seaside then you are set! Breakfast was hearty and included in rate. We secured a great deal of two nights for £99 and booked an extra night only to discover on checkout that our third night was over £90 leaving us feeling a bit blah. Overall we felt truly at home at the White horse and would definitely return. Parking and breakfast included. A very overly smelly ambi pur that seems to have penetrated all the rooms and now my clothes needs to be unplugged to earn an extra star.

Stayed 2 nights having booked and paid for superior room in this sea front hotel. Reception entrance off car park on the seaward side. Pleasant welcome and was even helped up with luggage. Worn stair carpet made us wonder but when we were shown to Room 110 we found it very superior indeed! Very large, wood-panelled room with 7 windows overlooking the shore. Fairly new carpet, good quality curtaining, comfortable large bed, crisp duvet and pillows - everything very clean. Plenty of storage space. Bathroom fairly small and less smart, needed a lick of paint and large showerhead could do with replacing, however all acceptable and plenty of hot water. Audrey and her team were all very friendly and helpful. Usual Old English Inn breakfast was very good - only downside was cold toast. For dinner on first night there was a function and we expected slow service but the second night the service turned out to be considerably slower! 40 minute wait for first course. No excuses offered by staff for long delay, so reasons unknown - suspect short of staff. Food was inexpensive, very well-presented, tasty and hot - when it arrived. Pleasant village, several walks available, and plenty of buses to Brighton, all made this a good break. I would return but hope Audrey sorts the kitchen delays out.

Room Tip: Room 110 (superior) on seaward side was worth every extra penny. No noise on sea-facing side of the...

Hotel is a nice building, stayed in room 105 which has a balcony overlooking the sea. Seen the other reviews about they need updating, room 105 needs some decorating to get rid of a leak from the room above and some painting for scuffs from suitcases. Bed was really comfy.

Restaurant - First night three courses took nearly three hours from start to finish, microwaved mac and cheese took an hour and when got the pudding it was the wrong one but was quickly changed as Chef Mike O'Wave was there to fix it.

Second night slightly quicker, mixed grill was a joke. I asked for a plate for the food on I was sending back to the kitchen and the manager asked why. The chicken is cold and then showed him how the breakfast sausage from that morning 12 hours ago. Every time I time I tried to get a fork in it kept running away from me as it was so hard and looked like a 90 year olds finger after being in a bath for 2 hours.

The manager was really sorry and it's not the first time food being sent back (if it's cold Chef Mike will heat it up). They have so much potential and this is letting them down.

Real shame, the staff are really good, ideal location, good rooms & comfy beds.

Room Tip: If you book late you might get a free upgrade to a balcony room
