“Overall enjoyable but a few rough edges”
Reviewed 21 February 2014

Second time we've stayed here. First time for our ten year wedding anniversary which was lovely and this time was for a bday celebration for our children. I'd alerted the hotel to this and said I wanted to make the stay really special. I asked for soft drinks in a champagne bucket and a card saying happy birthday. I got what I asked for, and no more, drinks all charged for, tiny card. Fair enough, just thought they might have gone the extra mile but didn't get anything, not even a 'hello' to the kids at check in. Room was nice, great size for family room and traditional style, smelt slightly musty and lots of flies a little off putting but I guess that can happen! Was a little surprised for a 4 star spa hotel that there was no conditioner amongst toiletries? Left me a bit stuck, asked at spa and reception but none anywhere! Maybe my mistake, I must be spoilt! Dinner in restaurant couldn't be faulted, excellent food and staff really put kids at ease. Slept ok although corridor bit noisy, creaky floorboards (fair enough?) and voices carrying. Breakfast nice enough although buffet uninspiring and surprised no baked beans?? Sounds like I'm moaning a lot, we did enjoy overall. Perhaps I was just expecting a bit more for the price we paid (vs other places we've stayed).

Lack of communication pre-arrival, despite the communication being us responding to an e-mail from the hotel. Telephone calls no better - put on hold and then disconnected on three occasions.
On arrival, perhaps the most hostile "welcome" we have ever received, from an obvious graduate of the Rosa Klebb charm school.
Very pleasant double aspect suite but poor service. Toiletries were not replaced and even when my wife requested more, she was provided with one set - for two guests!
The full breakfast was good but the remaining buffet selection was poor quality, unimaginative and poorly presented.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else

My wife and I spent 2 relaxing days at Headlam Hall recently, From arrival to departure the staff were most polite and helpful , throughout the Hotel.
Our room in the spa wing was very comfortable and clean.
I used the Gym and Pool which were exceptionally clean and well equipped.

We enjoyed our meals very much, particularly dinner on the second night as we were dining in the small room off the orangerie. I particularly enjoyed breakfast as we were served with toast that was actually toasted and not bread that had been merely threatened with heat!

Would certainly consider a return visit.

Stayed at Headlum Hall last weekend to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary. We had an amazing weekend. The food was outstanding - lots of choice, beautifully presented and yummy! Really enjoyed being in the outside Jacuzzi in the rain. The staff as usual are attentive -Andrew , manager is a superstar. . We can't wait to return in the autumn. My only negative comment was the bread served at breakfast , normally serve walnut breadrolls this weekend appeared to be warmed up pre-cooked breadrolls- just a small comment!!!! We highly recommend!!!!

Room Tip: We normally stay in Gainford Suite - a gorgeous room with four poster bed.

Perfect spot for a small wedding party, lovely food, spa and comfortable after dinner relaxation rooms. Friendly staff and beautiful location, great value! We were given the private dining room which helped to give the party a special feel.

Room Tip: We stayed in the main house as we wanted the old charm and to be all close to the dining room &...

Enjoyed lunch here for £17.50 for 3 courses. Absolute bargain!
Lovely, freshly cooked food and great service.
Will go back, although they have recently added a couple of quid to the 3 course lunch menu.
