“Great simple food, great staff.”
Reviewed 3 October 2013

Whilst this restaurant is on a main road what does it matter if the food is good and wholesome?
If you're looking for haute cusine then this is not for you, if it's good quality well cooked simple food then it's well worth a visit. Good rustic ambiance Four of us had very varied items on the menu and we were all extremely satisfied. The service is excellent and the staff friendly and helpful. Try their Gallette Bocage it was really tasty. Our visit was Saturday lunchtime and the restaurant was full by l pm. It is well frequented by the French so this must say something.

“Welcoming staff and great food”
Reviewed 30 August 2013

We ate at this restaurant on two occasions during our recent stay on the Cotentin Peninsula. We were lucky enough to be only a 5 minute drive from this lovely restaurant. The menu was varied and good value and meat was cooked on the fire on the hearth at the back of the restaurant. It was always busy and the staff, although run off their feet most of the time were very attentive and helpful.

On the last night of our holidays, we chose the 21 euro menu which got you a choice of starters, main courses, any dessert off the menu and cheese. My husband had the fish soup which he said was superb and I had the smoked ham salad. The steak was beautiful with high quality of beef and the dessert - crepe pomme caramel was sublime. Along with a pichet of wine (1litre is 9 euros!) we felt this was great value.. We did eat at the Moulin next door but we much preferred The Forge, as we thought the food was better and the service much more friendly!

Would definitely return if in the area again.

Cafe/restaurant at side of fairly busy road (parking on opposite side). Listed by our gite owner so we called for lunch. Had the 21euro menu. Starters pleasant enough but not special, mains very ordinary – one a very mean kebab with 3 tiny sausages and 3 or 4 small pieces of meat; the other a slice of what appeared to be processed ham covered with a sauce. Both mains with a goodly portion of very nice chips [perhaps they aim to fill the customer up with chips and cut down on the other parts of the meal]. Cheese had to be pre-ordered from a choice of 3 very ordinary cheeses (surely a choice from a cheese board at the table can’t be too difficult?). Very small portions arrived. Desert was a wide choice but those we chose were nothing special – Tarte Citron turned out to be Lemon Meringue Pie which had been in a freezer so the pastry was soggy (hardly touched – but no comment from the waitress) – the other was a crepe which was ok. Bill 49.8 euros (including 2 small glasses of draft beer at 7.8 euros!). We sat by "The Forge" where I watched my kebab being cooked - accompanied by the "cook" fore-ever fanning the flames with a plate - lots of ash flying around, and not at all impressive or professional!! We’ll be in the area again later in the year but will eat elsewhere.

“Great restaurant - it deserves more accolades.....”
Reviewed 21 October 2012

...but it wont get them from the Brits cos it's in the wrong place on the map! We discovered it by chance on the D902 from Briquebec to Valognes one Tuesday evening, which again was lucky because it's closed on Sundays & Mondays.

The forge is just that - a double bellows affair that in the UK would have an entrance fee & a gift shop but in France is a rustic restaurant with the biggest barbi outside of Oz.

We (6 of us) got there around 7.30pm and it was already buzzing with French families at big bench tables. I wont go on about how French children are so much better behaved than ours but they are. No fawning to the little darlings there; they eat with the adults, eat what the adults are eating and join in the family conversation.

Our little cherubs got the drift and were soon tucking in, one to a pasta dish and the other to a steak. Because of the barbeque this place is really best suited to carnivores but I understand our vegetarian was quite content. There were flagons of wines & various ciders and excellent Calvados to wash down the usual sweets & puddings.

Absolutely no English is spoken and it matters not a jot. Everybody is friendly and their happiness rubs off.

We visited this restaurant 3 times in August 2012, whilst staying in Bricquebec. The food was lovely and the service good and friendly. The meat is cooked over the open fire at the front of the restaurant and was really tasty.

Kid's portions were huge! Our only crticism is that it doesn't open until 7pm, but that is a French thing, not just this restaurant! The kids were quite happy stasying up later though!
