We are delighted to learn that you had a lovely birthday treat - Thank you so much for writing and for your recommendation.
If you have to spend your money anywhere for a short getaway spend it here. The hotel has a warm welcoming atmosphere with its cosy fires, library and wonderful grounds. There are lots of activities to take part for adults and children alike and our meal in the restaraunt was nothing short of outstanding. Really good value if you can get a package including a meal and not far from chester town centre. The spa is wonderful with underfloor heating. Just a lovely relaxing top class experience that is fantastic value for money.
Thank you for writing your kind review about the hotel having a warm welcoming atmosphere, as this is our aim. We want all our guests to be comfortable and explore the vast grounds we are set in. Our Executive Chef and his team are delighted that you found Redmond's Restaurant to be outstanding and value for money. We look forward to having an opportunity to welcome you back soon.
We've just returned from a 2-night stay at the Carden Park as a treat for my dad's 60th birthday. I booked back in October and at the time of booking mentioned that it was for a special occasion. They remembered this and left a card in his room wishing him a happy birthday which I thought was a very nice touch.
We booked a Golf View King room for my dad and myself, my partner and our 2 year old Daughter stayed in a Standard King room. They'd put the rooms next to each other which was great and we weren't in the main building but in the rooms on the side. Having read some of the previous reviews regarding the noise from wedding parties etc I think this was probably a good thing. The hotel as you drive up to it is magnificent and the setting/grounds are lovely. The rooms were immaculately clean and well decorated and spacious. It's worth paying the extra if you can for the golf view king because the room was huge and the view across the course lovely.
It's only about a 15-20 min drive from the centre of Chester and about 2 miles up the road is a pub called the Egerton Arms where we had a lovely meal on the Saturday night; I'd highly recommend it there.
Breakfast was very good, my dad reckoned it was 'the best hotel breakfast' he'd ever had! We didn't eat an evening meal at the hotel so I'm not sure what this is like.
Overall a thoroughly enjoyable stay with just a few niggles to mention;
-We found out from a letter in our room that the spa was undergoing a refurbishment which affected the changing facilities (the letter suggested you change into a robe in your room and then traipse over to the spa?!) I feel quite strongly that we should have been made aware of this prior to our arrival.
-The friendliness of the staff was quite inconsistent; they were either very friendly or not very helpful at all as was the case with a male member of staff in the spa who was borderline rude when speaking to us/having another conversation with someone else in the background. He couldn't be bothered giving directions to the male changing area which at the time was upstairs and didn't offer us towels.
-The children's play area doesn't have anything for younger children - My Daughter is 2 and the climbing frame was too big for her to play on safely.
-The pool and surrounding area were quite cold, as was the jacuzzi.
I know this sounds like a bit of a list but they were only minor things and wouldn't put us off returning. It's a lovely hotel and somewhere we definitely hope to return to. I spent a lot of time reviewing hotels in the area and am very glad I made this choice, we all had a fantastic time there.
After reviewing hotels in this area we are pleased that you chose to stay at Carden Park whilst celebrating your Dad's 60th Birthday. We are especially pleased that he found his breakfast to be the best hotel breakfast he had ever had. Thank you for also mentioning your rooms being immaculately cleaned and well decorated and spacious. We are also pleased that you enjoyed the views surrounding the hotel. During your visit however we had been updating our leisure facilities. We are sorry if this caused you any inconvenience but they are now fully open and much improved. We have also noted your comment regarding a male member of staff on reception and do apologise for his manner. Overall it's reassuring to know that you had a fantastic time and that you hope to return. Thank you for taking the time and trouble to write.
I stayed here for one night in January as a guest at a wedding held in the hotel.
The first thing that strikes you about this hotel is the scale of the grounds - entering down the mile long drive you can't fail to be impressed as the grand main building comes into view. The golf course outside looked well maintained and seemed to be popular even on a damp British winters day.
Finding your way to reception from the residents parking area at the back is a little confusing - this is a big hotel so be prepared to do some walking to get around! The staff at the reception desk were very quick and polite; I was impressed that my room was ready in spite of the fact that I had arrived well in advance of the advertised time, enabling me to freshen up and get changed before the days big event.
My room was a king sized room and very very spacious. Bathroom was relatively standard, nothing special but perfectly functional with a few toiletries provided. The view from the small window in my room was negligible (mostly of the roof of the adjacent building) but the sheer size of the room itself more than compensated for that. The bed was a super king size, a good 6 foot wide and very comfortable. There was also a sofa, two armchairs and a desk in the room, as well as a decent sized flat screen tv.
The wedding and reception were held in the 'Shooting Lodge' which really was a brilliant venue and decked out beautifully for the occasion. My only qualm about the hotel at all was that the drinks in both bars were very expensive - around £6 for a single spirit and mixer and even more for a large glass of distinctly average wine.
The breakfast buffet in Redmonds Restaurant was delicious with a wide variety of foods to suit every taste. I enjoyed indulging in the full cooked breakfast which was all fresh and well cooked; however there were plenty of alternatives including cereals, muesli, fruit, porridge and some very sinful (but delicious!) looking pastries.
All in all I would definite visit here again; hopefully next time finding the time to check out the spa facilities and make the most of the beautiful grounds.
We are so pleased you will visit again. We are set in 1000 acres over looking the Welsh hills with our very own Vineyard, so we do hope to welcome you back soon so that you can explore and check out the Spa facilities which we are sure you will enjoy. Thank you for writing your kind review as a wedding guest, we appreciate your feedback.
First let me say I am a frequent guest at this hotel staying at least twice a year and it has always been a favourite place to relax and unwind. I even wrote a glowing recommendation on tripadvisor on the 17/9/2011 after yet another excellent overnight stay.
However, to say I was disappointed on my stay on 27/12/2011 would be understatement. Firstly we booked on a B&B deal and booked a reservation in the Brasserie. However, we noticed another deal for £99 for a Golf view room with BBEM. We telephoned to change to this deal only to be told that there were no golf view room available.
On arrival at 4pm we were informed that we could have a golf view room but would have to wait as it was being cleaned. We were fine with this and decided relax in the bar.
This is where things started to wrong. The bar was very busy and my husband was onto his second drink before my first drink (a cocktail) eventually arrived.
The second disappointment was "The Brasserie". We had eaten there before and been delighted with food and service. However, on the 27th it was a different story. It was obvious from the outset that they were very short staffed as they even had reception staff sering in there, and consequently we waited ages to order both drinks and food, The drinks we ordered were then taken to a different table which caused some confusion! The meal that eventually arrived was awful. The chips were cold and very hard and my husbands steak was vertually inedible. We then tried to order dessert but I ended up getting the menu myself as I was fed up waiting for a waitress and was losing patience by this point. When the desserts arrived I have never seen a sorrier fudge brownie in my life.
During the time we sat in the Brasserie waiting (and it was some time!!!) many of the other guests within our hearing distance complained about both the service and the qualty of the food.
I did leave comments regarding this matter on a guest questionaire and my husband mentioned it at checkout to the extremely helpful, pleasant young girl who by coincidence had served us in the Brasserie the night before in the absence of "real" waitresses.
All in all, and I am very sorry to say this about a favourite hotel of mine, but I would definitely not recommend visiting this usually fantastic hotel during Christmas week
We are very concerned and most disappointed to read your review. If we have not already written to you, please can you contact the hotel direct so that we can look into your findings. As a previous guest we are sure you will appreciate that this is definitely not the norm.
This was our second stay and definitely won't be our last. We got a real bargain with a 2-for-1 January offer and at £59 a night for B&B we couldn't go wrong. Lovely room, gorgeous spa treatments, fab breakfast, beautiful grounds, friendly helpful staff...couple of tiny niggles - £7 for a medium glass of wine in the bar seemed a bit steep, and staff were a little slow to clear breakfast plates from the table, but it was very busy and they were doing their best.
The restaurant looks lovely and the menu sounds good, but on both occasions we have eaten at the nearby pubs - Edgerton Arms and Cock'O'Barton both brilliant.
All in all it felt like a special treat for a bargain price. Can't wait to go again!
Thank you for writing. We are delighted you found your room lovely and enjoyed your breakfast and spa treatments. We are also pleased you found the staff friendly and helpful and that you mentioned our beautiful grounds. We do hope that you will return and visit Redmond's Restaurant which over looks our golf course. We are pleased this stay was a special treat for you.
