“Perfect in every way”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 July 2011

We stayed two nights mid-week outside school holidays and cannot criticise anything about the Rampsbeck Hotel. The situation in its own grounds on the shore of Ullswater is very picturesque and easily accessible from the motorway at Penrith and provides a good base to explore the Lake District.
Our room was large and nicely furnished with a vast bed and a nice view over the gardens and to the lake and hills beyond. I'm not that bothered by bathrooms provided they are clean and functional but this one certainly went the extra mile in terms of its decor and fittings and Mrs Bear certainly appreciated it (and a long soak in the bath after our challenging walk across Striding Edge to Helvellyn in very poor weather).
We ate in the restaurant for both nights and have no hesitation in recommending it. The staff were helpful and attentive and we were even provided with a packed lunch for our walk.
All in all, the Rampsbeck gets our unreserved recommendation.

We have just returned home for The Rampsbeck after having the whole afternoon there enjoying afternoon tea, I booked for my Mum as her Mothers Day treat and we thought it was absolutly fab outstanding value for money and unbeatable service. We took my 23wk baby with us and they were very helpful with our needs and nothing was a problem.
The interior made Sharrow Bay look shabby!! We will definatly be returning!!

What a lovely place only stayed one night as a treat, and what a treat it was. This is a fantastic hotel in every way it was a perfect end to a holiday. We stayed in the Martindale suite which overlooked the fab gardens and part of the lake it was quite warm in the room. Had drinks and canapes in the lounge before being shown to our table. The meal was something else everything I had I had never eaten before and it was delicious and plenty of it. Staff very attentive, just a superb place to stay.

Room Tip: Quite warm in the room the radiator was on. If you leave window open watch out for the midges.

My husband and I have just spent the most wonderful weekend at this hotel in the lakes. I must have looked at every hotel in The Lake District, trying to decide which one would be best for our Anniversary and I can honestly say that on booking The Rampsbeck, we could not have made a better choice...it is PERFECT in every way. The hotel grounds are beautiful. The welcome is friendly. The rooms are extremely tasteful and comfortable. The staff are so capable. The atmosphere is delightful and most important of all..the food is STUNNING! And it's all done so effortlessly!
So if you are thinking of visiting the Lake district, don't waste any more time ..JUST BOOK The Rampsbeck.....You'll love it!

The location on Ullswater is excellent with wonderful views, the house overlooks the lake and is set in beautiful landscaped grounds.
The internal decoration is tasteful and stylish, our bedroom was very comfortable and spotless.
Unfortunately we did not have dinner in the hotel as we met up with friends who were staying in the area, but will certainly do so on our return.
Breakfast was served (how I hate buffets) and was delicious; with plenty of choice.
The staff were charming and efficient.

We had a fantastic 2 night DBB break here at the beginning of the month. My husband & I had stayed at the hotel before (as part of a larger griup celebrating my father's 60th birthday) as immediately thought of The Rampsbeck when we were looking for somewhere to stay in The Lakes with relatives visiting from Australia.
As two thirty-something couples, we were warmly welcomed by front-of-house staff on arrival. My in-laws had been upgraded to a beautiful room (22) with amazing views over the gardens to Ullswater, which was an unexpected bonus. Our room was a standard room in name only; still luxuriously furnished with plenty of space, spotless bathroom & very comfortable bed.
We were lucky enough to be able to have pre-dinner drinks and canapés out on the lawn adriming the immaculately kept gardens (there is even a croquet lawn if you investigate further). We were then taken through to the dining room to indulge in some exceptional food (a Michelin star is really deserved), whilst being looked after by the team. We really felt all the staff were excellent but Daniel, in particular, deserves a mention for his excellent combination of professionalism and friendliness -
no stuffiness here.
Breakfast is of the same high standard and generous portions, giving you ample energy to tackle the fells!
The hotel is well situated for a good variety of walks, including Aira Force and one involving use of the steamers (boats) from Glenridding. However it is also 15minutes from the M6 (not that you would ever realise this once you enter the valley), which meant we were easily able to fit in a walk on our last day before driving back to The Midlands.
The only problem with staying here is that you won't want to leave! Thanks to all the staff for a fantastic stay. We'll be back...

The hotel is situated on the north shore of Ullswater, with stunning view of lake and hills. Very friendly welcome. We stayed in a superior room - fair sized, beautifully furnished and stunning views. But wouldn't suit a minimalist. Wifi in room. Bathroom luxurious. Food is memorable - dinner begins with canapes (think foie gras, wild musheroom tartlets etc). The meal begins with a soup; starters and mains are a choice 5 or 6 options each. Everything is freshly cooked and is of the highest quality; perhaps a little on the nouvelle side of the flavour thesaraus, but even so you certainly wont leave the table hungry. The meal finishes with coffee and home made petit fours. Service is unobstrusive and knowledgable. Wine list is manageable and not too pricey. The kind of meal that makes you think "Wow". Clietele are 40+, couples, quiet. Overall, a 5* experience.

Room Tip: Lake view invaluable
