The Queens Head Hotel
Reviewed 6 September 2013

We arrived late afternoon and Bev greeted us with a warm and cheery welcome. The room was clean and comfortable. We ordered our food in the evening, and were amazed at how quickly we were served. The quantity and quality was exceptional. Breakfast was another treat. Excellent service once again, and the full english was so filling and tasty. We stayed in three hotels whilst house hunting, and this was by far the best. I am booking rooms for my children and their partners over Christmas, so they can enjoy the hospitality and try the skydiving experience, which is nearby.. I will stay again, and am looking forward to their Christmas menu. Good value for money.

Stayed for 1 night prior to spending the day at the Bedford Aerodrome.Arrived quite late in the evening and received a friendly welcome. Although just after hours for the kitchen they offered to take an order and the staff seemed out to look after their guests during their stay.

Unfortunately our upstairs room, which was a good size, was directly above what seemed to be an air con unit which was forever switching itself on and off and when it was on boy it was noisy. This made it quite difficult to get a good nights sleep especially as it was avert hot night and we had to have the window open.

What was most noticeable as we were made our way to our room was the general poor maintenance of the paintwork. Every bedroom door or fire door was dreadfully presented with every inch of woodwork needing a good coat of fresh paint as there were black scuff marks everywhere.Along with the somewhat tired decor it gave the overall impression of lack of proper investment by Old English Inns. This is a shame because it could look so much better if they splashed a little cash.

Finally beware if you are staying at the weekend.Breakfast is only served from 8pm and therefore with our early start we had to miss it. This seems a late start for breakfast in a hotel with many guests no doubt moving on quite early in the day and I'm sure many others have found themselves in the same boat.Whilst the room was still relatively good value for money and we knew we would be able to eat at the Aerodrome future visitors need to be aware of this restriction.

Thank you for taking the time to put your comments online. Being part of a large branded group we do have to follow their guildline with opening times. I will pass your comments on to the relivant person about both sound proofing the room you stayed and the opening times. I hope this has not put you off the Queens Head and visit us again when you are in the area.

We stayed here for one night as we were going to the Body Flight experience which was just up the road from this hotel and travelling down from Lincolnshire. We arrived around 7pm.
We were greeted by a friendly lady at reception, asked if we wanted to eat there that evening, and given the key to our room.
On first impressions although very small with the smallest bathroom I have ever seen, the room was clean and pleasant, although very hot, as it was one of the hottest days of the year, and only one window would open a little.
The toilet had a big chip in it which didn't seem very hygienic, but there was a kettle, biscuits, and tea, coffee and hot chocolate. No hairdryer though. Also the room was very dark and dingy so make up had to be applied in the bathroom.
We went down to have dinner after freshening up and found the dining area to be even hotter than our room.
To top it off we ordered our meal and was told after ordering that there were no prawns so we could not have a prawn cocktail which was the only cold starter on the menu.
As it was so hot this seemed very silly indeed.
We were also asked if we wanted to pay at the end of the meal or when we were checking out, we said we would pay in the morning when we checked out. This was a big mistake as we had a voucher for £5 off the food bill. When we came to pay for the food next morning we were not able to use the voucher because they said we should have told them about the voucher the night before.
The evening meal was okay but not brilliant and the room being so hot made it hard to eat.
Next morning we came down to breakfast and the reception lady asked us what we wanted for breakfast. There were no menus offered or explanations of what was on offer. We had to ask and were told...well, the cooked breakfast, eggs or toast.
I had a poached egg on toast which was over cooked and hard and my other half had the cooked breakfast which was okay.I would have liked more choice such as kippers or something.
In summary I would not say this was value for money as we paid £80 for bed and breakfast and the breakfast wasn't up to much, the décor was extremely outdated and dingy, and they need some sort of air conditioning in the public areas.
On the positive side the staff were friendly and everywhere was clean. If we had paid £40 I would not think there was cause for complaint.

Thank you for taking the time to fill in your comments online. We are sorry to hear that your stay at the Queens Head was to our normal high standards at Old English Inns.

We are working with our managers to make sure our high standards in all our hotels and pub. In the older hotels it takes time to redecorate and get the standards right

We checked in on a Sunday night prior to a track day at Bedford Autodrome. The location of the the Queens head was for the track was perfect. The staff were friendly and the food was really great- much better than we could have expected. Our room however seemed to be located over over a noisy air conditioning unit that just came on and off all night, and a hot July night with the window open that meant a broken nights sleep. The shower was broken also.
When we checked in we told by the lady on reception that breakfast was at 7:30. We said we had to leave before then and were told that we would have to miss breakfast. However when we were checking out at 7:10 we were surprised to see 4 other guests having breakfast! This annoyed us. We asked a member of staff if we could have 2 bacon sandwiches to go. This sparked some debate in the kitchen and someone else came out to chat to us and then check some book on reception. In the end we didn't want to cause a fuss so we had a glass of juice and left.

Room Tip: Don't have room 8 if you need to sleep with the window open. Dinner was excellent though!

Although the hotel is old and characterful and the staff are very helpful and friendly the service and facilities are not good. Our ground floor room was very cramped and there was almost no light in the room at night as very low powered energy efficient bulbs are used - we needed to use our own supplementary reading lights. One curtain rail was broken and there were cobwebs and dust over the windows and in the corners of the room. The bathroom was even more cramped with hardly enough room to sit on the toilet with the door shut! The shower head holder was broken and there was a lot of black damp mould visible.

WiFi which is advertised as free was down although it became available a few hours before we left. Worst of all the room was not serviced and we had to ask for some new towels, toilet rolls and tea bags etc which were left outside the room!

On the positive side breakfast was fine and check in and check out were friendly and efficient.

We booked here for two nights to attend a motorbike rally in Oakley. Bev and her team were super, and really looked after us. The food was excellent - from the breakfast to the dinner! Our room was lovely and quiet, in this delightful old pub/hotel and we slept well. Nothing was too much trouble for the team, and we shall certainly be coming back. The car park was nice and flat - good for motorbike parking!

Room Tip: There are rooms on the ground floor if you struggle with stairs.
