Description: CLOSED FOR THE SEASON Back mid March 2018 Lochleven Seafood Café, Deli and Gift Shop is situated on the north shores of beautiful Loch Leven3 (on the B86 in North Ballachulish) on the west coast in the Highlands of Scotland. Allowing the sea loch and mountain views to take centre stage alongside our simple yet elegant seafood dishes, our café is designed modest and unamusing. Live shellfish for our family run Restaurant and Deli is kept in onsite seawater tanks where the water is pumped continuously from the cold clean sea-loch on our shore. After being caught locally by our own fishing boats, the shellfish is stored in these tanks. This allows our Chefs to access the freshest possible west coast seafood for the Restaurant and our Deli.

Okay, so you want to take time to enjoy the scenery while driving along the twisty road next to the Loch. You might want to ask why they would almost hide this restaurant. The shellfish are amazing and the presentation is unique. All of our entrees were well worth the trip and the dessert, chocolate syrup and espresso over vanilla gelato was exceptionally simple and very tasteful.
After dinner, the returning drive along the Loch was a nice cap to a great evening. If you are in the Fort William area of Scotland, take the time to slow down and enjoy a relaxed drive and dinner along the Loch.

This is not a fancy restaurant. Looks actually very simple and bit cold interior for my liking. We came for dinner at 6.30 pm and it was almost full. We had starter and main and were out in an hour with a bill of 60 pounds:-) that included the food and one glass of wine. But the food was amazing. The best seafood we had in a very long time. If you go, you must have the mussels in cider (500 g for 10 pounds) and the scallops (5 pieces for 10). These were perfect starters and both was sooo fresh and delicious. I had fish of the day for main which was thick white fish with asparagus and gnocchi. It was nice but not great. My husband had seafood soup which was amazing. Big meal on its own (17 pounds) full of seafood incl mussels and scallops and much more. The soup was made with safron and about half a liter of cream:-) Great dinner. Bit too fast and it would have been nice having more romantic environment but food was great.

Pros: Very good seafood and wine in a lovely spot overlooking the Loch. Hip minimalist decor.
Cons: Hip minimalist decor. Service was slow. Place is hard to find along a tight road and on the other side of the loch from where the travel guides say it is. Call for directions.

This is a small restaurant overlooking Loch Onich. The place probably seats about 40 inside at most. There is a also deck with additional seating, but it was sprinkling so we and everyone else stayed indoors. It was almost full-up busy at about 5PM, but we had called ahead so there was no wait.

This place is a bit out of the way, unless you are a climber or avid hiker. It is several miles from any town, but you cannot miss it when you are on the loch road. There are great views of the Pap peak from lakeside in front of the restaurant (just becoming visible through the clouds when we were leaving).

There is a commercial shellfish prep and storage facility next door that pumps water in and out of the loch to the live shellfish storage tanks. I took this as an interesting sign.

The staff were friendly and the food was excellent.

We had local clams and salads for an appetizer and had a shellfish soup-for-2 (see photo). The soup was in a light cream sauce with medium-size langoustine, mussels, small clams, razor clams, and a bit of haddock. We skipped the desert as we had a long drive ahead and needed to rush get gasoline before it was too late.

The soup portion looked large, but with shellfish in the shells the portion was a little small for 2 hungry people.
Order plenty of courses and you will do fine.
Our meal was a reasonable 47 pounds, but we did not order beer or wine.

I would have given it 5 stars, but the portion was a bit small in spite of the large size bowl. Value is reasonable.
The flavor of everything was excellent!
Order more courses, allocate a couple hours time, and you can probably give it 5 stars.

I can't understand the reviewer who complained about the decor of this restaurant. Yes, it's minimalist - but that suits the exquisite setting and it's great to be able to eat top quality food in a relaxed and unstuffy atmosphere. We hesitated before ordering the shellfish platter for two as it is pricy. However it was an excellent choice and worth every penny. As well as a whole crab and lobster, we got razor and surf clams, mussels, langoustines and oysters. Really fresh and delicious and the puddings are good too.
