“Poor room, poor security, poor service”
Reviewed 10 August 2014

We booked a room at the Lodge on the Loch, and the rooms on the website looked ok for the price. When we arrived, our initial impressions were of setting foot in an old people's home rather than a hotel, functional arm chairs and plastic flowers in the reception. But the helpful Leon showed us to our room on the ground floor.
As we weren't paying a great deal for our room, I didn't have high expectations, but the room was pretty disappointing. The twin beds didn't have matching bedlinen, and sagged and creaked when you sat down. The decor was pretty dreary as well.
Our real problem started when we decided to go out. My husband went to the window to check it was closed, and discovered that the latch to close the window was missing. As we had valuables in the room, which was on the ground floor so anyone could get in, we weren't happy with this. We went to Reception to seek help. The receptionist didn't really have a solution, there were no other rooms available, and the only solution was to put our valuables in a small room on the first floor. We declined this and asked to talk to the Manager. This was Leon, who didn't think we had a problem, and said that people around here were honest and had never had any issues with theft. That may be true, but as paying hotel guests we believe we have the right to have a secure room. His solution was to drill a screw into the window from the outside. Not that secure, one screw that could easily be undone from the outside.
We decided to leave the hotel and explained our reasons. We requested a refund and were told that we would have to request this from the owner, who is in China! Despite several emails to the email address Leon gave us, we have had no reply and no refund.
We understand that this area of Scotland is safe and it probably is ok to leave belongings unsecured in your hotel, but were disappointed in the lack of empathy for our request, and the lack of response to our many requests for a refund. We wouldn't recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Not Room 8.

We chose the hotel mostly because all others were full. We had three different rooms. All rooms were clean and in a good condition. The lake views are terrific. The owner is a very warm person and helpful person. Ask him about the places to visit! The bar is small, but the choice of whisky has it all! We'll come back.

Reception has obviously seen a redec but not staffed, rooms need a redec. Biggest problem is lack of staff, on a busy Friday evening only 2 front of house staff to run dining room, bar and reception. The staff did their best but the whole experience could have been so much better. The location is fantastic, beautiful views, a pity about the noise from the road.

Room Tip: Request a loch view.

After reading the reviews on here I was worried that we would be checking into faulty towers and first impression was Mrs basil faulty at the reception desk who was pleasant but was harassed and looked like she wanted to cry!! She gave us our room key and said to come back in an hour as our room wasn't ready(we were there before the check in time). When we came back we thought we better check at the desk and a very pleasant young man gave us a different room key + showed us to room 12,terracotta room! We had booked a deluxe loch view room with a spa bath! The room was extremely spacious with a king bed and a huge spa bath, separate toilet and a bay window area to admire the view with 2 comfy seats and a table. Room was clean with eclectic wooden furniture. Really nice room. Spa bath filled quickly and worked well. The reception lady had calmed down and was perfectly pleasant after our proper check in. We didn't have breakfast so can't comment on the food. Had a good sleep. Yes,you can hear people going about and shutting doors but it's an old building! It didn't disturb us at all. Shower didn't work in the morning but when we phoned we couldn't get an answer. Was fine though, just had a bath. At check out, mentioned the shower to the gentleman at reception and he was going to look into it. All in all a good stay but they could do with more staff and maybe a bit of money invested here + there! We saw into a few rooms as they were cleaning them and the ones we saw looked pleasant. Not sure if some reviews are overly critical. Make up your own mind if you go for a stay!

Room Tip: Go for a front facing loch view room

I stayed here for one night with my husband.

Positives: It's a nice 3* hotel. The view from nearly every room is stunning, the lodge is just across from the loch nearly all the rooms have a lovely seating area nestled in a bay window where you can sit and enjoy the scenery.
The staff were pleasant and check-in and check-out was nice and easy.
The room was large and the bathroom was really large and well presented.

Negatives: We had dinner there and if we had been staying another night we wouldn't have ate there again. The food was below average. I ordered steak and was informed they were out, then I ordered stuffed chicken but what I got was a breast of chicken with the 'haggis stuffing' draped over it. It tasted like it had been reheated.
The room smelt of damp although there were no signs of any damp but it was that smell that is hard is not overpowering but difficult to get used to.

Overall we had a pleasant experience, it's situated in a lovely quiet area and we felt it was very good value for money particularly because of the breath taking views of the loch.

Room Tip: Ensure you get a bay window room. There are only 2 rooms with restricted views so make sure you don...

AVOID AVOID AVOID

I made the terrible decision of booking at the last minute this hotel, i didn't check up on the reviews before i went and i paid the price.

We had a tired bad smelling room, the plumbing sounded like a sick rhinoceros, spiders webs in the room, terrible food

But worst of all as mentioned above was the scottish breakfast, really it was evident that they were using the cheapest ingredients available to them, even they served my breakfast undercooked and raw, really the ingredients in our ASDA cafe are better quality.

There is nothing really scottish about this place and they did a bad job with the food.

ALSO when i wrote to them to discuss this, they ignored all 3 emails, they really are a dis reputable business

AVOID AVOID AVOID

what else? terribly overpriced -- nice views though -- even this crowd couldn't spoil that

Stayed here for one night, ate in the restaurant and it was very nice, couldn't fault it. Had a family room, it was big and spacious. The staff were helpful and friendly. For dinner, bed & breakfast is was reasonable priced for 3 of us. We had a room looking out onto the Loch.
