My wife and I have just had an overnight stay at Friars Carse hotel , on a dinner , bed and breakfast basis , which was booked as a special deal through Travelzoo . The overall deal was excellent value ..... a 3 course evening meal complete with £21.00 towards your wine bill and full Scottish breakfast all for £85.00 ! so basically you got your room for nothing .
The hotel itself is set in a stunning location on the banks of the River Nith , with lovely views all around , and is an oasis of peace and tranquillity set so far away from the main A76 that you would never know it was there . Inside the hotel its the usual wooden panelled walls and leather sofas that you would expect in a Scottish country house hotel , here and there it does look in need of some TLC , but don't let that put you off ...., the food is lovely and the staff very attentive . This place could be stunning if a little more attention was paid to the small things ..... but all in all a great value break from Travelzoo , and if you are into salmon fishing its paradise as it has its own beat on the river !!

Room Tip: all rooms are named after trees .... we stayed in " willow " , which had a lovely view of...

I had my first visit here last week-end with my husband, friend and dog. We all enjoyed it and would find it hard to find fault. Our room was "Maple" It was large, bright, had a large settee and matching stool and a large coffee table, a comfortable King size bed and the furniture, though not new was of good quality. Breakfast was excellent, plenty choice and dinner was excellent too, rather expensive at £24.99 but well worth it. Best of all was the wonderful walks in the grounds and onto the riverside. There was a mat, bowl and packet of treats waiting for our dog too. We will definitely be returning.

We have just returned from a 3 day stay at Friars Carse which we booked through our membership of Classic Hotels. Friars Carse is part of a family of hotels that includes the Waterhead Hotel at Coniston and Dumbleton Hall at Evesham.

I'll start with a few negatives/tips for improvements. Firstly, Friars Carse is not, in our opinion, as stunning a hotel as its sister hotel, Dumbleton Hall. The bedrooms are tired and in need of an upgrade.

Secondly, This is not really a hotel that allows you the luxury of leaving the car in the car park for a few days. You do need it to get to places as there are limitations to what you can do within walking distance (very few footpaths, villages, attractions, pubs etc within walking distance). And the busy A76 is at the end of the driveway and not really to be walked alongside! That said, the road network is good so its easy to get into Dunfries (6 miles or so) and down to the Solway Coast (a few miles beyond).

Thirdly, the service in the restaurant varied dependent on who was serving you. One morning we had to wait 40 minutes for our cooked breakfast. A breakfast did arrived after about 25 minutes, but it was clearly the wrong breakfast sent to the wrong table. After being told ours was "on its way" it arrived about 15 minutes later.

Now the positives:

The hotel is a beautiful buliding and the restaurant, lounges and well stocked bar area are all well maintained and in keeping with such an old stately property. The gardens are lovely and the location of the hotel, right on the bend of the river Nith which the gardens run down to meet, offer a splendid view up the river. As the sun sets and the hotel is bathed in the evening sun its a beautiful spot to sit on the grass and enjoy an evening drink. There are walks along the river, through the woods from the hotel grounds, but sadly these only run for a few hundred yards and there is no access to nearby Auldgirth village, which is a real pity. There is quite an abundance of wildlife in the grounds with grouse, red squirrels, rabbits and many species of birds in constant view.

There is plenty of car parking.

The hotel has its own full sized snooker table which I was delighted to use. A real find!!

The food was of excellent quality and would not have been out of place in a 5* restaurant. Credit to the chef.

The hotel is clean and the staff are very friendly. The beds are very comfortable. We stayed in Pine room which is a corner room and offers windows to 2 sides and overlooks the fields to the rear. Although Holly and Chestnut offer views over the gardens and river to the front of the hotel, we were happy with our room.

We would defintely return to Friars Carse again.

Room Tip: Holly or Chestnut provide front facing rooms ovelooking the garden and river. Pine offers a corner r...

The Friar’s Carse Country Hotel is a 19th century country house situated in 45 acres of beautiful countryside about 5 miles north of the town. This hotel was chosen partly for its location and partly because we’d previously visited Dumbleton Hall (a sister hotel) last summer and were delighted with that trip.
As with Dumbleton Hall the house has seen better days and, as you would expect, some of the fixtures and fitting have been well used. That said, this is exactly what one should expect with this type of 19th century country house hotel and it does not detract at all from the grandeur of this fine old house.

Our king bedroom was of modest size, bright and airy, with plenty of wardrobe and drawer space and we found the bed extremely comfortable. The bathroom was quite small but sufficient and came with a modern shower unit (no bath) but with minimal water pressure we found this a little lacking. Both bedroom and bathroom were well maintained and complete with tea and coffee making facilities and biscuits…

Breakfast was excellent and the choice of items on offer should cater for every taste. Dinner too was very reasonable and our party of four was generally pleased with the fayre.

The hotel staff really were a friendly bunch and we’ve rarely stayed at a hotel where we’d felt so very much at ease and our particular thanks go to Nick for his exceptional affability.

Car parking is plentiful and there is a small lift for anyone not wishing to take the wide staircase to their room.
If this isn’t enough to whet your appetite there are 45 acres of gardens and riverbank to wander at your heart’s content.

Bottom line… Would we go back? Yes absolutely. Do we recommend the hotel? Yes, unreservedly.

We took a break at Friars Carse so my partner could fish. We arrived early in pouring rain but the friendly receptionist said our room was ready so we could get in. Downstairs is a lovely wood panelled lounge bar area with the restaurant further through. Our room was Ash which was on the first floor. It was very clean but very dated. The wall coverings, curtains and furniture were all very old and a drab colour scheme. The bathroom had had some work done but the grouting was dirty, the shower not very good and the bath panel was dangerous as it was all cracked on the outside and you could quite easily cut yourself stepping out of the bath. From the window which need repair and painting was a view over the kitchen courtyard, looking up you could see grass growing from the guttering. When the sun came out we went for a walk along the riverside which was quite beautiful, the setting stunning. The front garden area was well maintained with some outside seating. From a distance you could see the grand old building which once would have been beautiful. Sadly it needs a massive cash injection to carry out a maintenance programme both inside and out to return it to its former glory.
We went down for drinks before dinner and enjoyed sitting in the lounge. The staff were all really nice and friendly. Once in the dining room the decor was very sad but the views over the garden lovely. The food was very iffy, the starters of avocado and prawn salad and smoked venison were fine, both main courses were very basic both in presentation and the combination of ingredients. The smoked haddock was tiny, piled on top of crushed potatoes with a poached egg on top then it looked as though carrots and tiny florets of cauliflower had been thrown on the plate. The chicken stuffed with Brie didn't have any Brie it was so hot I think it had been in the microwave and burst out, it was served with a berry sauce and rice. I didn't know if I was eating main or dessert, very disappointing. Both desserts were ok. We went on an offer and even then I don't think the food was value for money. The next night we ate elsewhere. The breakfasts were also disappointing and very little choice. The fried eggs were the saddest eggs I have ever seen. I think from my experience and reading some of the other reviews the kitchen has serious issues which need urgent attention for the hotel to move forward.
Putting the negatives aside I would probably stay again as I really appreciated the beautiful tranquil surroundings. With lots of TLC this place could be magnificent but the work needs to start now! I feel very sad to mark it down but I am doing it on the whole experience.

Room Tip: I guess over looking the garden would be best but don't expect grandeur in the rooms.

Booked on a Groupon deal of £99 for 2 nights bed breakfast and evening meal on the first night together with a bottle of wine in our room and tickets for Ellisland Farm . What fantastic value this deal was, the grounds are picturesque and well maintained and the staff welcoming and friendly. Full marks go to the chef who provided 1st class meals way beyond anything we have experienced on past Groupon deals. Highly recommend.
