We stayed here for 2 nights in early August . Our room had superb views over the Meni Straits. The hotel staff were lovely and the children thought the pool was great. We had more than enough space for the four of us in our 2 bedroomed apartment which also had 2 additional beds in the at the far end - the children chose those as that was where the huge picture windows were! Which then meant we we had a spare empty twin room! My only comment would be that for the price it would be good if breakfast was included even if it was the continental rather than a full English . Our room had a lovely table with seating for 6 and a microwave and sink and fridge which made making lunch a cheaper option for day trips out.

The Hotel Plas Dinorwic is ideally situated for both Anglesey expeditions and trips to Snowdonia. A drive to Holyhead takes about forty minutes and the journey to the Snowdon Ranger car park is less! Additionally its wonderful location right next to the Menai gives amazing views of the straights especially if you have one of the appropriate rooms. There is a lot to like but if you're expecting the uniformity, and dare I say, quality, of a 'chain' hotel prepare to be disappointed. This is a characterful family run establishment with all the pros and cons which that entails. In brief, the advantage is that all the staff are friendly and approachable and responsive to any requests which you might raise. The disadvantage is a certain familiarity or way of doing things which some guests may find uncomfortable.

I'm going to preface my comments by saying that overall our stay was pretty good and none of the points I'm going to raise seriously detracted from the experience. However they should be mentioned if only to give potential guests some idea of what to expect, after all that is what Tripadvisor is for, right ?

No toilet paper in our bathroom. Yes we arrived about 1:30, half an hour before the official 2pm check in time, so understandable. This was raised with the staff and was rapidly fixed.

Breakfast not included in the price and you have to notify the staff the night before that a) you want it b) what sort you want and that c) what time you are going to turn up between 8am-10:30am. It appears that basically the conservatory which is used as the breakfast room isn't large enough to accommodate all the guests at one sitting, which is fair enough, hence the prior warning. Note that 'continental' or cooked breakfast both cost the same so if you are a light morning eater you may not be getting the same value as your cholesterol loving buddies.

Dinner, if you want it, also requires fair notice. I didn't try this so can't comment further.

Room: I noticed the following:
The double bed I slept in had a very peculiar feature; I could feel the tops of the springs in the mattress as I laid on it. Didn't detract from sleep as such, just a bit weird. The other beds in the suite had more accommodating mattresses.

No phone ... guests are supposed to use their mobiles or walk to reception if they want something!

Fire escape instructions: these were positioned at the bottom of the suite door upside-down .. as it happens I am quite adept at reading inverse text and could see that the assembly point was ‘car-park’, bizarre though, n’est ce pas?

Bathroom: a few cracked tiles (mostly higher up the wall so not a biggy) However, the air extractor vent blades had gunk on.

Living area: LED spot lamps were being used (sound eco-credentials) but there was obviously an issue with the driver on one set of lights as they started to flash on and off after a minute or so of being activated. We kept them switched off so as not to attract party-crashers.

Finally ... I am not sure when friendliness becomes familiarity, but as they say familiarity breeds contempt. My issue here is that the matriarchal family granny decided to 'stick the boot in' after we returned from a walk up and down Snowdon. She believed that I was not supporting my companion enough and launched into a castigation drama. This was further repeated on a second encounter. An appropriate way to treat paying guests? You decide!

From the minute we arrived to the minute they waved us goodbye, the staff here were amazing. Helpful, welcoming and always there. The room was lovely, spacious, comfy and clean. Breakfast was well worth it as it filled you up for the day ahead and was well priced. The location was fantastic for getting anywhere in north/west Wales and Anglesey and was only 15 minutes drive to the base of Snowdon. We really didn't want to leave and will most definately be returning!!!

Had a great time at Hotel Plas Dinorwic in July. Lovely welcome, very clean rooms, lots of choice for breakfast. Historic renovated Slate Masters house overlooking the old Slate Port. Staff more than welcome to explain the history of the house and area. Didn't use the pool or eat at the hotel so unable to comment on these. No cooking on Sunday night when we arrived but Hayden booked a table for us at a local bistro. Fabulous views of the Menai Straits. Suggest you book direct with the hotel to get the best rooms. Highly recommended and will be staying there again.

Room Tip: Book direct with the hotel and ask for rom with a view.
