Stayed for one night whilst walking the Offa's Dyke Path.
Decor was a bit dated and the room was starting to look a bit scruffy, we also struggled to connect to Wi-Fi in the room but there was no problem in the pub itself.
The room was a good size with plenty of space for bags it also had tea and coffee making facilities and a hairdryer, the bathroom was spacious and despite being attached to a pub there was little noise disturbance.
Food was excellent (both dinner and breakfast).

Montgomery is a beautiful place, full of Georgian and Timber Framed buildings and a delightful mix of shops.
We stayed at the Dragon for the third time in the last eighteen months. The new proprietors are working hard to upgrade the facilities and the rooms while preserving the character and ambience. Our room with it's oak beams was spotlessly clean. All the staff old and new are extremely pleasant.
We ate in the Restaurant on both evenings of our stay and found the food and the experience very pleasant.
We are looking forward to our next visit to this delightful hotel.

Montgomery is best described as a one horse town, but it does have another pub as well as an Indian Restuarant and a fantastic small museum. But then the hotel..... Very much mixed feelings, the room was clean, spacious reasonably appointed but in some way old fashioned. Not enough to complain about but I feel if you were not used to old English hotels you would have a moan. Talking of moaning here I go! Room 16, if you are offered it refuse it unless you are deaf! The first problem is the main door to the hotel, although its on a closer, it bangs. And shakes the window above it... the window in room 16. Now this would not be a problem if you retire after 11.30pm as most of the hotel bar guests have gone by then but if you try and sleep before that time, you will have difficulty.

Now the main one, creaky floor boards, and when I say creakly... my other half is a very heavy sleeper and they even woke her up. Obviously it depends on who is staying in the room above but I think in our case it must have been a pair of incontinent elephants. Moving around throughout the night and disturbing our sleep.

When mentioned all I got was a shrug of the shoulder from the receptionist.

So over all apart from the noise I would stay at the hotel again (not in room 16), but having spent half an hour exploring Montgomery, I would not necessary go back there.

One other gripe, if the hotel put out bottled water for the first night, why do they not replace for the second, they dont reduce the tarrif for the second night?

Breakfast was good, 8/10

Room Tip: Not room 16 or indeed any at the front of the building as there is the Town hall clock just outside...

Everything was perfect, the location is great just below the castle and in a quiet location with a village clock the finishing touch!, the hotel is quirky but fun and the staff are so friendly and the food for breakfast and on the evening is of a high bistro quality! Local bakery, chip shop, corner shop and pubs all in walking distance... Great for a long weekend stay definately coming back :-))

We visited the Dragon Hotel on our walk along Offa's Dyke.
The room was very small, the floor was very oblique, the shower door could barely open because the sink was hanging too close to the shower.
Fawlty Towers without the jokes.
The breakfast was reasonable.
We will never not go there again.

Room Tip: If you really need to sleep there, choose a large room, but do not pay too much.

We stayed one night here - the building is full of charm and creaky floorboards. Room was well decorated and comfortable, but not the hugest room or bathroom. However quite acceptable. We dined there, very nice dining room and very good food. Staff very attentive and polite. The swimming pool is now open again and was clean and warm. Would go again.

Room Tip: The front rooms may hear the nearby bells, though these don't go on all night!

I Can't really review the hotel as we only saw the reception and the bar. The reception is not somewhere that you'd like to stand for three hours while they try to sort out double booking cock ups, so we adjourned to the bar. The receptionist was very helpful in trying to find alternative accommodation from a small list she had, completely avoiding our comments that we had already had a long day and didn't want to drive to Chester, nor did we want to drive back from Chester the next day. Our offer to bed down in the un-used function room was laughed off and finally at 10pm we were offered accommodation in an unfinished nearby guest house which was owned by one of the bar staff. We were blissfully happy and thankful when this was sorted out and retired immediately to bed.

Despite the hotel having an email with our booking on it, they continued to blame Booking.com for the cock up, and subsequently Booking.com have confirmed that our booking was made and would take this up with the hotel. I suppose it was the easy option to blame someone who could not be contacted to shout at on the night.

We were competing on a rally over the weekend and luckily it was an early finish Saturday and a late start Sunday, other rallies with less favourable start times would have been a completely different story.

In the hotel's defence, we were supplied with a couple of rounds of drinks and offered a "main course" wile we were waiting. (declined as we'd already eaten) Many thanks for that.

I am not sure whether this is a fair review of the hotel because of our situation but it is certainly a warning to not trust communications between hotel and booking agent. I think this one is down to the antiquated booking system being used by the hotel and the booking agent's inability to access or populate this system. Time may tell.

Room Tip: Check that you have a room first. A good room is a bonus!
