Let's get the headline out of the way - the hotel has cutlery and china by Villeroy and Boch and most attractive it is too - unless you are left handed (i.e. sinister as opposed to dextrous - no wonder we suffer). The handle of the latte glass actually digs into your hand, but I struggled on after a satisfying dinner of fish and chips. Breakfast was more of the same - good cup of tea, but a distinctly right handed cup. In fact, the hotel has left handed cups, so speak up early on!
The Farmhouse is in the countryside with no sea view and that's about the only complaint I can think of (apart from the china) . Just enough of an old farmhouse has been retained to give the impression of - a farmhouse. Everything else is tastefully modernised in the extreme. The overall look of my room was Turkish/Moroccan with heavy drapes, birdcage type lights and uplighters in between the downlighters, including two blue ones set into the wall, one each side of the loo. The bed had enough cushions on it to tick the "boutique hotel" box and to infuriate the average male who has never understood the need for cushions anyway. A well laid out wet room type shower rounded off very comfortable and well thought out accommodation.
I had dinner that evening and thoroughly enjoyed the meal in a dining room that again tried a bit too hard - lots of bare wood floors, woven reed lamps, too much background music and very attentive service. Good value and well-prepared and presented. Difficult to judge overall, as there were very few other diners on a weekday evening.
Full English breakfast was very good – and was included in the £99 room rate (upgraded without request).
So, the Farmhouse sets out to be a boutique hotel and finishes up as a pretty good example of this. The whole thing is a bit twee for my taste - tries harder than it really needs to, but it seems churlish to complain about that!. I've stayed in far less attractive surroundings and with much less attentive service for the same price.
And remember, there are left-handed cups for the afflicted!
