“A foodie heaven....”
Reviewed 22 November 2011

A foodie heaven.... a walk through the garden with a glass of champagne, and Raymond Blanc himself rushing out to the garden to pick some herbs... looking like an excited school child rushing out to trick or treat for a pillow case full of candie. A pleasant hello.. followed by "enjoy" in his french accent made this the start to the best lunch I have ever had. I won't spoil the story... you need to experience and finish it for yourself. Beware of the most magnificent cheese trolley the most incredible foodie has ever seen....

I have been pondering over this review for the past month!!

There is so much attention to detail in everything that happens at Le Manoir and so much of it is so perfect for the guest that it seems a pity to hold back with only a 4 star "Very Good" rating but, after a month's reflection, I think this is fair.

And, without doubt, the room, the service, the grounds and, of course, the food were all five star perfection. One very small example: we were looking at the Apple Compote on the breakfast table which was delicious and a young waiter overheard us discussing it. Without any prompting, he came over and carefully explained how M,Blanc made his compote with equal portions of three different types of apple to get the best flavour, colour and texture. This says so much about the staff training and their genuine enthusiasm to make your experience special and it is quite typical of every moment that you are there.

It would have been absolutely perfect but the whole experience was really spoilt by the wine prices: Two glasses of non-vintage pink champagne before dinner - over £50. Two half bottles of wine with our meal - one white and one red, neither particularly special - over £160.

I am always happy to pay higher prices for outstanding food, special accommodation and outstanding service but there is really no justification for such hefty mark ups on pretty average wines.

But having said that, we really did enjoy the experience and would recommend it to anyone with this one caveat.

Room Tip: I suggest that they might take their own champagne to the bedroom!

A christmas gift from my girlfriend for a day's cookery course at Le Manoir resulted in dinner bed and breakfast the night/day before. From the moment of reservation to the bill paying....perfection at a price was the result.

"RB" as all his loyal staff call him..has Le Manoir to his perfect standards...( he was even dining in the restaurant the same night with friends...other restauranteurs/Hoteliers please take note)

His non-intimidating staff were amazingly friendly, highly trained and expertly confident...the room was an exceptional 6* standard...we were upgraded without asking...and the food/presentation was to die for....even though the overnight bill came to 4 figures +...gulp!

But what the hell...I do not mind paying for such perfection and neither should you...Just grin and bear it...you will still be smiling and talking about it for months and years afterwards.

For this Christmas I have asked my girlfriend for some socks.

Room Tip: Check which room/location you prefer...we booked one room but were automatically upgraded to a super...

I stayed for one night in the Snow Queen room with dinner included. It was absolutely fantastic, upon arriving and being shown to our room, I actually thought we'd been upgraded, or that they'd made a mistake on my booking because the room we were taken to was absolutely stunning and equipped with everything you might need.

The meal which was included was simply one of the best I've ever had and it really was an evening I'll remember for many years to come. The breakfast was also fantastic with smoked haddock and poached egg being beautifully presented.

I also have to mention the staff, who were faultless in their service. This is the only hotel and restaurant I've observed such high standards from, usually places of this calibre miss that friendliness and can be a little pompous but that was quite the reverse here, making for a perfect stay and dinner. I must also call out the sommelier who was very attentive and helpful.

I cannot recommend this place highly enough and hilst perfection comes at a price I'll most definitely be back.

Room Tip: There aren't any bad rooms but the hotel website doesn't do the reality justice!

I surprised my husband with a stay. We had the botticelli room. The room was fantastic! Sprial staircase leading up to 2 baths and classical music playing too..We then had the 9 course dinner, again amazing!!! Nothing was too much trouble, the staff were friendly and it was like staying in a luxury home and not a hotel...in a good way. The little touches we're fab and a walk in the gardens after a fantastic breakfast. Price wise, it's not cheap, however it does represent value for money and the experience of it will leave you relaxed and happy and very full... We will be going back for sure!

Room Tip: If you want the perfect couples experience then Botticelli would be a fantastic room...

We had a fantastic stay - both the hotel and restaurant were great experiences, the staff were equally as chilled out as we were. Our special occasion became very special in memories - nothing is too much trouble and everything is simply stunning, the gardens, the rooms, the service and the food - we shall be returning.

Room Tip: What you view on Le Manoir website is exactly what you get - if not better

The title says it all. It will be difficult not to run out of superatives for these comments. Right from driving into the car park, when the porter opened the car door as soon as we were stopped. They directed us to reception and phoned through so that we did not have to check-in as we were met at the front door and shown directly to our room. (We had booked a mid-week package so a deposit had been paid so this might have been a factor). The room was very comfortable, warm and included such items as free fruit, water and a decanter of a very nice Madeira! We were told of Afternoon Tea being served in the lounge and decided to unwind from the journey by enjoying a cup. The list of tea's to choose from must have numbered 50 !! This made for some interesting reading but we soon made our individual decisions. When the tea's arrived - with 2 gorgeous pastries which just had to be shared as they both looked so good :) - the appearance and flavours were all we might have expected and more - as indeed was the whole time we spent there.. ... After enjoying the superb bathroom to freshen up we moved on to aperitives and the meal, where again the total attention to detail was so obvious. The experience was the best meal I can remember ever! We kept it 'simple' opting for the 6 course 'tester' menu and all courses - and wines, bought by the glass - were explained by the waiter(s) when the plates and glasses arrived at the table. Not only did we enjoy it but we also learnt more about it. The following morning continued the high level of satisfaction with a real 'gourmet' breakfast to pick form. I opted a Oeuf Benedict - which again turned up to the best ever! Before we left we made sure we walked around the gardens, which were full of lovely sculptures practically everywhere you went. Were there any 'issues'? Well the bedroom was a little warm for us and the temperature control we were shown how to use didn't actually seem to control the temperature as it told us it was 17 degrees but was certainly well into the 20's. I found the radiator control, so that a quick twist and an open window soon made it comfortable. It is certainly not a cheap hotel to stay at but it is such a memorable experiance it is worth every pound.
