In recent years the short break has been our mainstay, seeking out restaurants of note. This time it was Le Manoir and it falls so dramatically short of it's peers.

You could argue that it's all about the food. The food is very good and certainly worth a revisit but just for the food, we certainly wouldn't ever stay here again. The room was good but not good value.

From the moment we arrived we felt like we were tourists rather than a couple out for dinner and overnight stay.

We were offered a souvenir card with our dinner reservation on it, a souvenir welcome note stating which room we stayed in, the gift shop was pointed out and a price list provided, then a number a ‘maps’ of the grounds provided. The same type of thing you’d expect when visiting Disney. When you do wonder around the rather small grounds you can’t help but note that other couples are following the same well-trodden route that you are. It just does not feel private or personal.

The same goes for the staff, they are everywhere, loads of them trying to engage you in an ‘Hello’, ‘Enjoy your day’. It sounds nice but I when I’m trying to talk to my wife I don’t want to be interrupted every 5 seconds by a member of staff.

What amazed me was with so many staff, how come I had to ask them to clear an empty table before we could sit in the lounge. Over the weekend we constantly came across dirty glasses and plates throughout the buildings. Staff just walk past them.

They have got greedy and try to get more people in than the building can comfortable handle. The result is overcrowding. This runs through to the dining room. You are so close to other dinners that you can’t help but overhear their conversation and when leaving the table you can expect your chair to be knocked. Take some tables out, make it a better experience and reduce the number of staff.

The high number of staff and constant new faces at the table provided for confusion. Of the nine course dinner with accompanying wines, they failed to deliver one course, got the wines out of sequence, correcting this took time and we were being rushed through the final course and out of the dining room. Wonderful experience!!!

Also, watch out for the drinks prices. We regularly drink a particular Champagne at a restaurant that is renowned for its wine list. Le Manoir charge four times the price for the same bottle!!

When you charge for perfection you have to deliver it and Le Manoir doesn’t.

There is a long list of the little things they do wrong. Perfection is doing all the little things right and that’s why they miss the mark.

We stayed at Le Manoir for our 10th wedding anniversary on 22nd March 2012 and this was olur 6th time. We absolutely love this hotel - the staff are so friendly and professional, the rooms are beautiful (everyone is different, this time we were in the main house in Hollyhock) and the food deserves its Michelin star status.
The room was large and beautifully decorated. Everything you could possibly need is available including a small fruit platter and a carafe of Madeira. You are greeted at the entrance to the hotel on arrival and there's music is playing in your room when you enter. It is just so relaxing whether you are in your room, in the public lounge or bar or walking around the extensive gardens.
Yes, it's expensive, but we think it is worth every penny and hope that we can return again and again as we just adore staying here.

Room Tip: We think the best suite is Lemongrass but you cannot go wrong with any of the rooms.

Fabulous building and grounds and rooms are spacious, luxurious and relaxing. The staff are as attentive as they can be and you never feel crowded or anything other than the centre of attention. We had the six course menu on night one and the a la carte on night two - both very good, with excellent wines at the suggestion of the somelier. It was a special occasion and fitted the bill perfectly - even if it did cost the same as a small wedding.

First visit to this hotel for our special birthdays. What a delightful experience! From the moment we parked our car, we arrived to a very warm personal greeting and this continued through to our departure. We could not fault a thing. We were shown round the hotel before taken to our room, which was very comfortable and inviting. The attention to detail in the hotel and from the staff was very impressive. The nine course tasting menu was lovely, even though overwhelming for me, was really enjoyable. The gardens are a nice feature and a chance to take some memorable photos. Everything was done so very well and we cannot wait to visit again.

Room Tip: We had a standard room but even so this was lovely and spacious enough with a sitting area where we enjoyed our in-room champagne and breakfast in the morning .

April 2012. This was a Birthday surprise for my husband’s 50th, and we were blown away.
From the moment you arrive you are treated like a VIP, the staff are very attentive but in a relaxed informal way, you are encouraged to treat the hotel as home from home, and to ask for anything you need.
We chose a courtyard room which turned out to be Sandalwood; it smelt lovely, looked lovely and had everything you could wish for. After being shown around the hotel and then to our room, we had a courtesy call 10minutes later to make sure everything was alright.
We chose the 9 course decouverte meal which was absolute perfection, it’s such a good idea to be able to try so many different courses, not only does the food look incredible, taste delicious, but after you have finished the flavours go on in your mouth, truly amazing.
Probably the only tiny criticism was the price of the wine, you do expect a large mark-up, but it did seem a bit excessive on some of the wines we knew, although the individual drinks were a similar price to any other quality hotel. But this is not a good enough reason to mark the whole experience as anything other than 10/10. We would love to go again, and hopefully will.
