Was told the Brown Trout had changed and was great, with a new chef. It has been fifteen years since I was last there and fifteen years will be too soon before I go again. Nothing seems to have changed. Being generous it is stuck in the 80s but it is more like 70s and that includes the menu. The bar area still smells like there is no smoking ban but that could be accounted for by the open fire. It was extremely dark and depressing. Still at this stage had an open mind. Went upstairs and we were put by the large window. Good as then at least we could see the menu without a torch. Starters arrived and they were adequate. Nothing special but ok. The mains arrived. Having studied the menu, which was very dated, I chose steak. No problem having tobacco onions instead of onion rings. Oh dear what a mistake. How any chef can make soggy, grease limp tobacco onions is beyond me. Dreadful. The chips were frankly inedible. The sauce (creamy mushroom) was vile. Finally the steak itself was dry and tasteless. All the other meals varied from bad to ....ok. Did not stay for dessert. The service was ok. The best thing about the place was the two scruffy feral cats in the car park. Needless to say none of our party of four will be back. Could not recommend it. Overpriced for basic food and stuck in a time warp.

Mother and I had a invite from our two friends to join them for lunch.
On arrival we were met by Jane who made us most welcome.
She always makes sure that the table and chairs met our requirements.
We all had a lovely meal, great atmosphere.
Staff were very efficient and helpful.
Thanks again Jane, we will be back.

Literally just back from staying at the cottages in the Brown Trout for 3 nights. This was our first time staying and we definitely couldn't fault the cottages at all, very spacious and all the home comforts you could ask for and the best was being able to bring our dog with us, he was also allowed in to the hotel while we got something to eat, dogs are allowed on the tiled area which is spacious, he behaved himself while we were eating. Food great in the hotel and staff very friendly, can't wait to go back, will definitely be recommending to friends and family, well done Brown Trout

Quaint country setting. Accomodations for a cottage were changed quickly when heat and tv were not working. Moved to main hotel to spacious room. great pressure and temp in shower made it easy to relax and enjoy our time there. Food was great, staff was exceptional in service, and beds were so comfortable. staff spent time with directions and nearby attractions. Jean was outstanding! Would stay again and again on future trips.

Room Tip: Rooms closest to the reception area have a longer wait for hot water. Dog friendly also.

Booked on Saturday luckily we got a room.On arrival we were given the key for room 12 which had a foosty smell, immediately we were moved to 7 a great big room, spotlessly clean and sort of old fashioned, but there was something missing , a change of colour and change of duvet can work wonders. The staff were really friendly so were the locals, made you feel really at home.Food was really exceptional, breakfasts and dinners. After a long day and a lovely meal it is nice to just put your feet up and watch tv, a 32"would be a better size to watch as the bedrooms are large.

Room Tip: If you are going as a family the cottages would maybe suit better.
