Review of Parham House & Gardens

Parham House & Gardens

Recommended length of visit: 2-3 hours
Owner description: One of the top twenty in Simon Jenkins's book 'England's Thousand Best Houses'. Idyllically set in the heart of an ancient deer park, below the South Downs, the Elizabethan house contains an important collection of needlework, paintings and furniture. The spectacular Long Gallery is the third longest in England. The gardens include a four-acre Walled Garden with stunning herbaceous borders, plus Pleasure Grounds. Parham has always been a well-loved family home, and only three families have lived here since its foundation stone was laid in 1577. Its tranquillity and timeless beauty have changed little over the years. Now owned by a charitable trust, the house is lived in by Lady Emma Barnard, her husband James and their family. Open from Easter Sunday until the end of October. Please see the website for days and times.

“The "Spicer" Review”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 November 2013

This is not your usual 'Stately Home' in that its not cluttered with stuff but has a raft of fabulous paintings and interesting things including its history and restoration. Fabulous buildings and gardens. The guides are super and well informed. Our only disappointment was not being able to take photos but one can understand why.

“Excellent Art and Tea Rooms”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 November 2013

This lovely was quite a surprise and I would recommend to anyone who appreciates art and antique objects.

The house is lovely and well restored and maintained and the guides are expert and very informative. The book explaining the history of the house and the paintings would be useful if purchased beforehand, as this will really enhance your enjoyment and appreciation.

The gardens would be lovely in summer.

Excellent location for a picnic, but the tea rooms have very fresh produce and sitting in the old original kitchen surrounded by the cooking tools of long ago was charming.

A hidden gem.

“Don't go for lunch”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 November 2013

The house is very nice although rather lacking in historical atmosphere. The gardens are really lovely. But we went to have lunch before going around the house and it could only be described as extremely mean. The food itself was ok but tiny portions. Supposedly quiche with 2 or 3 salads but they divided a desert spoon of couscous between me and my husband and we only had a few bits of lettuce and tomato and the quiche was minuscule and they charged us £7.50 each. My teenage children had the smallest baked potatoes I have ever seen served as a main course. We were all left very hungry. The cakes were nice and adequate portions for the price. Sadly, I will always remember Parham as the house where they serve really mean and over priced lunches.

“Autumn Foraging Day”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 October 2013

We have attended the Autumn Foraging Day for the last 4 years, but never had time to visit the house until this year. What a wonderful house, the guides in the house are approachable and know so much history - they are fascinating to talk to, they really make the house history come alive. It is a wonderful drive through the estate to get to the house and unfortunately the weather rather spoilt the outside activities as they had dispensed with the large marquee this year. In previous years we have been on the mushroom identification walk - very informative and also the deer walk, again very interesting. It is a definite must if you are down near Storrington. We will be there again next year.

“Wonderful Historical House”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 September 2013 via mobile

The approach through the large estate gives a clue to what lies beyond but once inside, the sheer quality of the house and the amazing collection of furniture and paintings makes this an exciting journey through history. It is on of the most compelling great houses in England and is a must see if you are in the area. The church in the grounds is wonderful too.
