I was a little worried about some comments on another review but I needn't have been. Family run by the wonderful Peter and Isabelle, the White Hart is a charming hotel that offers exemplary service, extremely hugh standards of housekeeping and fabulous food in their resteraunt.

Our room was a good size (then again it was the family room) with a TV, kettle, hairdryer etc and the, very very clean, bathroom came with an electric overbath shower. The room was cleaned daily (we stayed for nights) and towels were also changed daily.

Breakfast was simple and delicious (we had the full English, but continental isavailable also, along with a range of cereals) and served quickly. Breakfast times are a little early for our personal taste (7:30am - 8:45am) but very well organised. The evening meal in the resteraunt (additional cost) was excellent and fairly reasonably priced, our party of 4 had steak, mixed grill and Lamb and all were delicious, again, with excellent and prompt service.

Yes they close in the afternoon (between 2:30 and 5:30pm) and the bar closes, promptly, at 11:30pm but you have to remember that this is a family run hotel, they have to have some time off.

If you want somewhere that is open 24 hours with a late bar, then go to the Hilday Inn, if you want a charming, family run hotel with excellent service and standards, then stay at the White Hart in Martock.

A mixed bag at the White Hart, I'm afraid. Wonderful location, its easily accessible within the gorgeous but quaint Martock. Excellent car parking facilities and a small but inviting outdoor area for a beer and a ciggie. The menu in the window was impressive and certainly got us salivating. Eager to get in and fill up, we were soon reminded that quaint often means dry as at 3pm, the hotel/pub was now shut until 5.30pm. Blimey, glad i took a book.

Once opened, check in was quick and cheerful but I wouldn't advise as suitable for those prone to cardiac arrest as the stairs are steep and unforgiving with no option of a lift. Unfortunately i had packed enough clothing to last me until retirement which caused a little difficulty in getting to our top floor room. Lesson learned.

You always know things are going to be disappointing when the your travelling companion opens the door and announces, in a tightly cheerful voice, 'Well, at least its clean...' The rooms are in desperate need of updating with tired carpets, peeling paint and toilet doors that won't shut tight. Cleanliness was faultess but that indescribable sad and tired smell of an old B&B hung around like a disaffected lover. The shower is a little coffin like due to its small but boxy proportions and whilst i may be considered curvy(I'm a UK 14), the towels provided would have left Jordan feeling exposed they were so tiny.

The restaurant was lovely, food was a pleasant surprise and the wine list was more than adequate. I can't recommend the courgette and stilton soup enough and plan to recreate it at home, delicious. The only downside was that we were a large party and were told off for moving chairs without permission. Naughty.

The bar had a wonderful atmosphere although this may have been down to the fact that the Celts had taken over as the majority of the drinkers were visiting for a family wedding (including my friend and I). The craic was only spoiled when last orders were called at 11.30 and the lights turned out at 12, whilst we were still finishing our drinks. Ok, we can take a hint...

The continental breakfast was ok but took forever to arrive as we all seemed to visit for breakfast at the same time, which is forgivable. Checking out was swift and friendly however the 10am check out time is ridiculously early.

All in all, I'd stay there again as the location was perfect and the restaurant worth visiting however those who like a more plush or modern environment, or are shy about their ablutions, may do well to look elsewhere.

A warm welcome from the owners made this hotel a pleasant place to stay. The rooms were clean, comfortable and warm, so nice to return to after an evening out in mid- November! There is an excellent bar and cosy seating. There are 2 dining-rooms, well presented and inviting, oh! and a French chef in the kitchen!
