“Great location in quiet village and dale”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 May 2014 via mobile

The pub is located in the centre of picturesque Dent village and Dentdale, one of the quieter valleys and a fantastic spot for some good hikes. Many excellent walks out of the village or very nearby. Great Knowtberry summit from Cowgill is a good walk with fab views of the three peaks and beyond. The George and Dragon is a small inn with real ale and ciders on draught. Free parking. Breakfast is very good. Rooms are clean and warm. Bed comfortable. We had a room on first floor over the bar which was a bit noisy, although guests seemed to leave about 11.30pm - midnight and then it was quiet. Evening dining was a very varied experience. First night the starters of garlic mushrooms and potted shrimps, followed by steak and ale pie was good. Second night the meal was terrible. Pan roasted sea bass fillets with a lemon buttery sauce turned out to be poached sea bass with buttery sauce and slice of lemon. Pork belly dish was so dry and the crackling was too bendy and impossible to cut through that it had to be sent back. We were told the cheddar mash accompaniment had run out and were offered chips or new potatoes instead. The waitress did her best to rectify the problem with the pork belly and offered an alternative dish - not wanting to wait too long again (having waited for nearly an hour already) my partner decided to go for a starter instead. Oh dear - not sure what had happened since the day before when this starter was fine, but this time a large portion of mushrooms chopped up in what tasted almost like mushroom soup and heaps of garlic salt was presented!! Not a great meal all in all! Looking at other reviews it seems there is not a lot of choice for eating out in Dent and the quality is about the same at the two pubs. If you don't mind taking the risk with dining, this is a good little place to rest your head after a good day of walking and the chance to sup a good pint or two of local Yorkshire ale.

We stayed in a self catering cottage near Dent last week. On our last night had dinner at The George and Dragon. Young Lady called Lavender looked after us. Explained about the local beers (offered tasters, and got us sorted. Hubby had Liver and onions, something we never cook at home. He said it was so tender and delicious. I had their own version of Chicken Kiev which was really good. Lots of veg. So, service and food was excellent.

I poppoed in with some friends for a few pints. I found the pub to be very inviting, a really great range of ales. It also had some samuel Smith beers, but looked like a free house to me.

The menu looked a bit more upper market to typical pubs, but didnt get chance to sample.

Overall we all had a good time having a few beers after a nice long walk - good times!

Stunning village, great beer and wonderful historic building but our stay was ruined by terrible service.
Asked to move as soon as we sat down because the table was needed for dinner guests, (without bothering to check if we were booked in for dinner - which we were) Despite having booked a table for 7.30 and being early we waited nearly an hour for starters, the main course took even longer, the long hungry wait ruined our evening as we didn't leave the restaurant til 10pm, tired and annoyed. Also what looked initially like a good veggie menu choice was typically lacking in thought as 1 of the 2 starters and 2 of the 4 mains were mushroom based. The restaurant was clearly understaffed despite the fact we had booked in a week before and just appeared to have 2 very young people running around doing their best to serve -which again made us feel uncomfortable. To top it off our room was absolutely freezing as the central heating was switched off, not helped by a bathroom window that wouldn't close. There was a small wall heater but it had little impact on a cold April night. Even getting to sleep was a problem as loud music started playing from the bar underneath us as we got into bed.
Breakfast was totally unmemorable and luke warm, the 'veggi full breakfast' sounded promising but then made no attempt to offer veg sausage or anything remotely interesting so was actually a standard breakast without the meat (but the same price).
Very dissapointing, would not stay there again.

Room Tip: check if room has any heating or broken windows before you stay in cold weather.

£50 for a double room including a delicious cooked breakfast - bargain!

Dent is small & quaint with one other pub, great walks along the valley.

If you like real ale - this is ideal, lots of local Dent Brewery beers on tap.

Recommend for a night away in the middle of nowhere :-)

We stayed here for thee nights as part of a walking based trip.Good position in the centre of Dent with its own carpark which is great advantage in this tiny town. Friendly staff and a nice atmosphere when the fire was lit, most evenings. The ale that was available on draught was very nice, all was available in bottles. The food was OK but we felt it was overpriced for what it was.
The room was comfortable and cosy.

Having never been to Dentdale before both myself and my wife wanted to spend our special wedding aniversary in a peaceful part of the country. The area was all we wished for and the choice of staying at the George and Dragon was the icing on the cake. Curtious and helpfull staff, great food ( real ale heaven) clean and comfortable rooms. A special mention to the landlady who dropped us off at the station for our journey home which left us with some wonderfull memories. A visit when a music or beer festival is on will be our next objective. Well worth a visit
