St Mary the Virgin Church
Reviewed 6 September 2013

St Mary the Virgin Church was the village church where my mother-in-law got married and it's seen many a family wedding, funeral and baptism.
We wanted to look around it and thought at first it was closed but a very helpful Churchwarden told us to give the handle a good push! We spent quite a lot of time looking around and a relative was able to share the many happy memories he had singing in the choir.
It's a lovely church, used and well maintained.

On entering, I was struck by the wonderful Norman arcades (my favourite period of architecture) leading on to the 13th century east end.
The stone on the arcades is warm in tone and very attractive. In the chancel there are two twentieth-century stained glass windows of a deep and vibrant richness - purples, ivy greens and deep sea blues. They positively glowed in the late morning sunshine. The church is large and cathedral-like in proportion and the purity and simplicity of both architectural periods made a powerful impression.
