“Doesn't get any better...”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

Just over two years ago we visited this hotel and were very unimpressed. We complained about our evening meal and when the Manager came to discuss this with us he was completely disinterested, so we left, never to return.
Having been compelled to cancel our holiday this week we decided to give Chilston Park a second go as it's conveniently local.
We were booked in for a gourmet evening with wine paring so we decided to grab a sandwich at lunchtime. We sat in the lounge area where they were serving afternoon teas. The barman came over with the menu and said that he would be straight back, after 30 minutes we asked another barman if he would take our order as the first guy never returned. The second guy never reappeared. The first guy finally came back and took our order, we also asked for some peanuts and the timings for the gourmet evening. He said that he would find out and let us know. He never returned with the information or the nuts!
By the time we were eating our sandwiches ALL the tables were dirty, crockery everywhere and no-one to be seen.
Outside there were beer glasses in the flower beds.
At reception we overheard someone booking in to attend the gourmet evening and being made aware of the timings etc.
We couldn't wait to leave next morning but breakfast was served late, although the staff pleasant enough, it was so slow.
Maybe we should have learnt our lesson and definitely improvements to the service should be made.

Dear Guest
Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay and the occasion that you previously visited the hotel. It is of course disappointing to read that your stays with us have not been enjoyable and I offer my most sincere apologies for this. Your comments will most definitely be fed back to both my management team and all team members that were on duty during your stay and we will use them as a learning tool on where to concentrate our efforts to improve the service offered. Whilst it clearly has not be evident to you during your visits to the hotel, I am confident that Chilston Park has made great strides forward within the last few years in both our service delivery and standard of product. This can be clearly be seen by the volume of positive experiences and reviews listed on this site that vastly outweigh the negative experiences a few guests may have had. I am naturally disappointed that your stay was one of these very few poor stays and assure you that we will do our best to continue to improve our guest experience where ever and whenever we can.
Best wishes

Stayed at this hotel overnight for the wedding of my sister. We had the Cromwell Suite, a rather large suite of rooms, including two bedrooms. The room was lovely, but you have to enjoy a little bit of character. The bathroom was lovely, with a rather large bath, with a lovely view out of the window, but there was no shower, and some rather interesting gaps in the not quite level floorboards. The bedrooms were lovely, and clean, but there was a lot of bumping of heads in the middle of the night due to sloped ceilings. The staff were attentive, and the breakfast rather nice. The outdoor grounds were safe and wonderful for the children to run around in. The hotel is rather hard to find (you certainly would not come across it by accident). All in all, a rather pleasant stay.

We have picked Chilston Park Hotel for one night of our trip to Kent. We stayed in Gilt room in the main part of the house. We found the surroundings and interior of the hotel really special. The staff were very attentive and offered great service even though it was very busy bank holiday weekend. Dinner was delicious and clearly showed the experience and care of the chefs. Breakfast was also equally delicious and of outstanding quality.
The only thing we missed in our feature room was comfortable seating which we believe was removed and put in a hallway having seen previous images of the hotel on the website. All we had was chairs at the table so we had to sit on the bed to watch TV. It would have been nice to have had an armchair or cushion in the window bay.

Dear Guest
How delightful to read that your short break with us was such an enjoyable experience. I am really pleased to read that the standard of cuisine and dedication to there craft shown by our kitchen team stood out for special mention within your review. The pictures that you have posted of our Gilt room are really nice and thank you for sharing them with our future guests. We are in the process of having the soft furniture that you mentioned reupholstered, in fact the second craftsman approached to undertake the work was here with us today looking at the items for refurbishment. I do hope that we will be able to get these back into the room soon as they will really finish this beautiful space off.
Thank you for taking the time to review your stay and I hope that we will be able to welcome you back to the hotel again in the near future.
Best wishes

I'd booked a Mews room. The rooms have beamed ceilings and are a little bit low in places but full of character and are comfortable. The main hotel is a lovely old breakfast.
I've stayed here several times in the past and always had a good dinner.
This time was starter was really nice and the venison on the main course was good but it's the first time I've been served "burnt black potatoes". I'm amazed this plate was allowed out the kitchen. This was acknowledged and i was not charged the £15 upgrade cost to go from the standard TDH menu to the A la Carte menu.
Service at breakfast was very slow.
Reception staff were very friendly.

Dear Guest
Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us. I am sorry that the issue described regarding the quality of potatoes served to you took away from your experience. Please accept my apologies for this. I see from your review that the team acted promptly and took corrective action to resolve the situation at the time and I whole heartily support them in the action that they took. I do hope that this glitch in an otherwise enjoyable stay will not stop you from returning to us in the future.

Had a very pleasant one night stay to celebrate my wife's birthday. The friendly and helpful staff make a big difference. Although our room Raj was lovely with a four poster, it had no outlook and was overlooked by other windows, but that did not spoil our enjoyment. Breakfast was excellent, Dinner was good although to my taste the chef got the seasoning a bit wrong.Again the restaurant staff were friendly and attentive. We were lucky with the weather and took advantage of the interesting grounds and lake. This is the third Hand Picked hotel we have stayed in and is the best so far.

A big thank you to all the staff at Chilston Park for a wonderfully relaxing and special way to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. We had a 2 night break mid week and it felt like we'd been away a week, it was that chilled. Fantastic food from the al a carte menu in the restaurant on both evenings, absolutely couldn't be faulted.
Loved the 'do not disturb' lamb. Had to buy one for our grandson.

Room Tip: A feature room in the manor house is a must.
