“Excellent, charming historic hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 July 2014

Stayed at the GAH for 3 nights while visiting Galway. The hotel is on beautiful grounds overlooking the golf course and the Lough Corrib. Very picturesque. The front desk staff is very friendly and was very helpful in organizing tours and coming up with ideas for activities. The pub is cozy and has a nice selection of menu choices. Breakfast buffet w/hot food addition is adequate and included in the room price. Rooms are a good size, with very comfortable beds. A big plus is the complimentary water and the wifi which worked great.
Two things that would make this a true 5star hotel would be: 1. if it had a fitness center...while the grounds are lovely for a run, occasionally the weather does not help.
2. The hotel is about 15 minutes from the city centre and the taxis cost about 12-14 euro one way. would be great if the hotel operated a shuttle into town.

Room Tip: Pick a room on the second floor or higher for best views.

We were turned off at check in with the snooty blonde. She was rude to the boy assisting guests and she even cursed at him right in front of us. She called him a smart @zz. The type that thinks they are funny but they're not. There was 2 adults & a 14 year old checking in. She put us in separate rooms that weren't even connected. Mind you, I booked this trip in Feb and our stay wasn't till June. The rooms had twin beds, coffee service and the bathroom was tiny. No vanity to put your stuff on and the towels are kept in a closet outside the bathroom. No instructions on how to operate the complex shower. The handles were behind the shower doors so you had to get inside to turn it on. The whole night doors were opening & closing and they were heavy slamming doors. Then before the crack of dawn staff was moving luggage for a bus tour who was leaving in the morning. More door knocking & slamming. This place sits on a golf course so the views are amazing and is well kept. Except the atrium that was littered with dead bugs on the floor. The trolly car restaurant is $$$$. Only bar food was affordable and decent, small selection. Irish breakfast was $22 Euros. The coffee was so strong a pot of cream barely changed the color, after that the coffee was cold. The Abbey was small & disappointing. They roped off the stairs so it was just a small unimpressive chapel. No pool, no gym and no spa. This place is about 2 miles from town so we ate & stayed there most of our stay. Next time we will find another place to stay.

Room Tip: Sorry, no good rooms that I saw.

It's a really nice hotel but not for golfers as we thought it was proper course. Our mistake but assumed it was 5* therefore.

Close enough to Galway but still far.

Lovely Irish castle feel so we enjoyed that.

I booked 2 nights in Glenlo Abbey as a treat for my other half to celebrate 5 years together.
The hotel is lovely on the outside and the reception area and staff were very helpful and professional; however, we were disappointed with our room.
Glenlo Abbey claims to be a 5 star hotel and although our room was large and the bed comfy, the room itself (215) felt bare and the bathroom had a broken sink and tiles on the bath that had been repaired very badly. There were also marks on the wall in our bedroom.

I was expecting to be wowed by room but found this very disappointing. We overlooked a small garden, but most of the view was of open grassland that appears to be undergoing some work.

The staff were wonderful though. The breakfast was excellent and it was our second visit to the Pullman restaurant which was fantastic, if a little expensive, but the food was very tasty and the experience is unique.

The bar food is also very good and the staff are efficient and friendly, it's just a pity that the room let it down, especially for the price I paid for the 2 nights. I've stayed in other hotels in Galway that had nicer rooms for a better price.

having brought my father home to Sligo my partner decided that a treat was in store for me as well. He could not have picked a lovelier spot... stayed 2 nights with breakfast and a meal on the Orient Express train in front of the hotel. The reception staff all such lovely ladies and not forgetting Dan who give you all the information and help you could possibly need. We had a fabulous room with a view of the golf course and lake beyond .. yes there is no air con so opened up the windows which I found was adequate and am sure if you asked for a fan one would be available they give the guests what you want if you ask. Breakfast is more than adequate hot or cold and there is something to suit all tastes. The meal on board the train is divine. The chef needs to be commended, and also excellent service and very attentive without being a nuisance. We had the four poster bed room which has recently been refurbished by the looks of things and absolutely lovely. You get what you pay for and if things are a little overpriced for some then don't stay is my advice - if you want a 5 star break then this is the place and everyone deserves a treat from time to time and at some stage in your life then Glenlo is the place to be. I think the new owners have done a good job so far and my partner and I will be back. My partner does play golf and thought the course was adequate for a 9 hole course. Taxi fare into the City centre is around 10 euros - don't walk though - we did one day and needed a stiff drink on our return, its further than it looks. Thank you to all of the staff for making a break something to remember. Lynn and Robert Wroe.

Room Tip: rooms on the right side of the building have a good lake view along with the golf course.

This is an expensive hotel. It's a new facility built onto the old abbey. When I booked I asked for a queen or king sized bed - we were given a room with 2 very small singles (we only stayed one night so I didn't ask why). The room was large enough, well decorated. The bathroom was nice, however, the door was on a swing close lever as a fire door. I've never heard of a bathroom door being a fire door. We had to find a way to prop it open due to steamy shower. The shower / towels were good. Separate cold/hot water faucet in the sink were the same everywhere we traveled in Ireland. They do have turn down service. Breakfast was served in a nice room and was average. DO NOT PLAY golf here - it's a 9 hole course which I'm OK with, however, esssentially there are no greens. They tell you the greens are a bit rough AFTER you pay. The fairways are in better shape than the greens...the greens are essentially non existent. If it was free or 10 euro to play fine, but it's not!

The staff here are wonderful, and the grounds and rooms are beautiful. Breakfast was delicious. I had to give it three stars though because not only was there no air conditioning, there is no ventilation whatsoever except for the windows, not even a fan in the bathroom. If you're staying in a room where you cannot benefit from the breeze, you are in for a restless night. The price they charge does not match the experience, and if you want to eat in the Pullman Restaurant, expect to pay 50 euro for a 2 course meal.
