“Loved the Connemara Coast Hotel”
Reviewed 1 August 2007

The hotel just underwent a huge renovation and the newer section is beautiful. Older rooms, however, are great. I had a beautiful view of Galway Bay (when the fog finally lifted). The food was delicious (we had breakfasts and dinners there). Note that there are no elevators, only stairs in the hotel.

However, don't use the laundry services. My daughter did a load of laundry on the night before we left, and the machine broke with her clothes in it. It took the hotel almost 2 weeks to get the clothes out of there! It did take several emails and phone calls to get the clothes back, but they finally arrived 2+ weeks after we were home.

We recently stayed at the Connemara Coast Hotel which has lovely views of the bay, a nice lobby, great staff, ok+ food...

To start out on a positive note, Trevor (Assistant Manager) was truly a gentleman and went out of his way to be accomodating. We also found every other member of the hotel staff to be polite and attentive. It's too bad they don't have much to work with.

Even though we read the comments here before our trip and wanted to book another property, our travel agent assured us that this place was where we should stay and if we didn't like our room, we could get a better one quite easily. This was not the case. (We also heard another woman ask for a different room.)

The lobby is updated and clean so we had hopes the rest of the hotel was the same. We started off with a terrible, dirty and smelly room with cloudy windows. The carpet was filthy with cigarette burns throughout. I would not have walked on the carpet with my shoes off. After complaining to management, and standing our ground, we were "upgraded". It took over an hour of frustration to get this "upgrade". This room was better in location and size, but not much else. Our view of the bay was clouded by the broken seal in between the two panes of window glass. Located on the second floor, it was extremely hot and not much window area to cool it off. The cleanliness of this room was still questionable. Everything in the room was old and in dire need of updating, from the ceiling to the carpet.

We had a nice dinner in the dining room. The food was pretty good. However, looking around the dining room the window sills, vases, etc. were quite dusty. At breakfast the chairs we were shown to had crumbs on them and the table cloth had sugar on it from the previous seating.

The grounds around the rear of the hotel are not well maintained. The biggest laugh is the hot tub which looks like an oversized whiskey barrel (see photo) then look at their page under "Fitness and Relaxation". The planters around the pond should be removed if no one is going to take care of them and the decking re-stained and re-nailed (see photo).

Given the state of what we saw elsewhere, I would have never considered entering the pool, etc. (leisure area).

During our stay, we walked by several "non-smoking" rooms where people were clearly smoking in them.

Part of the property is under construction which starts at 8 AM.

The online brochure shows a beautiful property and nice, clean, up-to-date rooms rooms. The front of the property looks a lot different than the rear, the lobby area is quite nice as is the small bar area. The room photos must have been taken from the couple of rooms we walked by, where the doors were open during the day (all made up).

If Sinnott Hotels would take the time to transform the rest of the property so it is in keeping with the entrance, they would be able to increase their rates and keep it occupied. But, I suspect they get enough bus tours to keep the status quo. In our opinion they should close the Connemara Coast Hotel down for a couple of months and do all the renovations and construction at once (inside and out), instead of piece meal. This would make for a much happier clientele who would want to return.

Just returned from a second visit to this hotel. And yet again just what the doctor ordered in terms of a relaxing couple of days.

Great service, very friendly staff who couldnt do enough for you. Lovely location overlooking the bay with great leisure facilities. Food is good but would tend to be over-elaborate (but they will cook special food if required). Breakfast is excellent.

Overall a good experience, some nearby building going on but that thankfully didn't disturb our stay and we look forward to returning next year.

My GF and I stayed and dined there on our tour through Ireland. We arrived right at dusk. To be honest we didn't get a chance to experience the full range of the hotel, we were only there one night and left the next morning. Since it was the off season there were not many people around. The place had the feel of a summer retreat I just felt like we were missing something. The food was okay, but we were the only people under 40 in the restaurant. The view was beautiful from our room but the heat was not up to par. I wouldn't be opposed to staying there again, just not at the full rate. It really felt like a place for the retired crowd.

  • Liked — The view was nice
  • Disliked — Heat not on all the way in November.

We arrived at this hotel on Sunday 1st April for a prepaid 3 night stay at the end of a four week trip around Europe. At first glance the lobby and public area were beautiful - but being April Fool's Day, the joke was on us!

Although we had prepaid B&B this was the only property in four weeks that demanded they be allowed to swipe our credit card "for incidentals" upon check-in!

When we got to our "superior" room we discovered problems. We had reserved a non-smoking room yet it was one that had been previously occupied by a smoker. There is no non-smoking floor. Non-smoking signs on room doors seem to be changed at random all along the corridor.

The kettle and base in our room were absolutely filthy - and remained so despite our placing them conspiciously for cleaning on the desk. We found ourselves walking on discarded peanuts when our bare feet mistakenly strayed beneath the bed.

The blue upholstered chair at the desk had holes worn through the fabric. Furniture in many cases had all traces of varnish worn down to the bare wood.

The view from our side room was a glimpse of Galway Bay - seen through the hotel's construction site and blocked off gardens and inaccessible seafront.

The restaurant was another situation entirely. Upon arrival one is greeted by a "please wait to be seated" sign - and then told by staff to "sit anywhere". Great, BUT, as soon as we sat down another staff member says we can't sit there because "the table is not set for breakfast"!

Unlike most hotels we stayed at there is no buffet breakfast. One must order from a menu. This became a challenge when we ended up with a waiter whose only ability to speak English was to attempt to convey that he could not speak English! Well, we did manage to get our breakfast, one tiny egg plus a few assorted meats.

We just cannot believe this property can get away with treating customers/guests so indifferently. On their website they make a great point in dissociating themselves with Galway's water problems. However, this open attitude does not continue into being honest about construction. Only upon arrival and checking in does this become obvious. Too late for many, especially guests who have prepaid or being cajoled into swiping their credit cards!

A great way to celebrate our 39th wedding anniversary!

My boyfriend and I visited recently and weren't overly-impressed with this hotel. Our room was right next to the maid's closet and the floors were VERY creaky. We heard the maid walk in and out of the room starting at 7am probably 50 times. We also weren't impressed with the food and the dining room. We ate most of our meals here and every time we went to the dining room they played this really awful elevator music that made us opt for room service. The population of the hotel was also older--as thirty-somethings we were hoping for some place a little bit more hip. The bar was nice and our view was great. We also liked the chocolates left on our pillows. Overall though, a forgettable experience.
