We stopped here in July for 1 night as we were going to a wedding in Dunmow, Essex.
The hotel has by the looks of things been fairly recently re-fitted (a few marks here and there, but that's about it). The bar and reception area are welcoming and comfortable and the staff friendly and accomodating - they allowed us to check in early to enable us to get changed for the wedding.
There was plenty of secure parking and a welcoming outside garden area with well maintained plants and baskets.
On booking in, the landlady remembered we were going to a wedding and was good enough to book us a local taxi - which I might add was brilliant as we had a guided tour of the essex countryside on the way to the venue with stories and facts, and then he sent us a text message saying 'your carriage awaits', when he came to pick us up, which I found quite amusing. A really nice man and service.
Anyway, we had some lunch here and it was tasty and fresh and good value for money. They also have a good selection of ales on offer , some local and the eating area is clean and tidy and well maintained. The waiter and bar staff were attentive and polite.
We had booked a double room and the room itself was large, clean and comfortable. Out of the window you could see the local church and windmill which is well worth a look.
The bed was large and comfortable with clean cotton sheets and pillows and bespoke throws and cushions, which was a nice touch.
There was a wall mounted LCD TV and DAB radio which was a pleasant suprise. There was also a large wardrobe, with more than enough room for two people's belongings.
The tea and coffee making facilities were pretty standard, but the choice of Earl Grey was nice.
The only downside really was the bathroom - they had obviously redecorated the bedroom to a high standard however the paper in the bathroom was a bit 'peely' with the condensation as there is no window in there and although the bath is enourmous, the tiles, grouting and shower curtain could do with freshening up... it was also really dark in there, which was a little weird if i'm honest. That would be my only gripe though! Don't let that put you off though, it may just be that one bathroom that isn't particuarly good.
The breakfast however was something else, it was wonderful! I have never seen a breakfast menu quite like it... kippers, eggs benedict, scrambled eggs, bacon, full english, kedgeree... I could go on.. and if there wasn't something there you wanted, they would do you something else instead. There was also a large selection of fresh bread for toast, pastries, jams, fresh fruit, cereals and yoghurt. My personal highlight was the enourmous steaming cafettiere of coffee brought to me - which I hasten to add was fresh and delicious.
All in all, this is definately an 'above par' pub/hotel and the staff definately work hard to make it what it is.
A delightful stay in a delightful little town.
