The Swan is set in an attractive old English village, opposite Thaxted church and although it's difficult to modernise these medieval buildings, the room we had was very clean and the bathroom spacious with newish suite, fluffy towels etc. We had a room at the front which was a bit noisy first thing in the morning as it is very near the road and of course Stansted airport is not far away so the flights do start quite early. The pub and bar areas are typically beamed, cosy and welcoming. Prices are excellent for food and drinks being part of the Old English Inns chain owned by Greene King. Breakfast was excellent.

Room Tip: Perhaps a room at the back may be quieter as right on the road.

Stayed 2 nights weekend getaway. The rooms are definitely tired and shabby in places - yes there is mould above the windows but I find myself asking perhaps there should be considering the age of the hotel??? It did add to the character but was it healthy? However the room was clean and comfortable, toilet was a bit of a nightmare!. On the whole the staff were helpful, breakfast was a bit of a disappointment on both mornings. The tables were poorly prepared or in a mess from the previous occupants. One staff member decided to sweep the wooden floor with a yard broom whilst we were eating. I understand that there was a staff shortage and did empathise until I was served with a cup of tea which could only have been described as still in the pot from the previous evening. Evening meals were on the whole very good.

Room Tip: Take a hair dryer if you need one. Be prepared to contend with a mouldy room and poor toilet system...

Another mini break to the Swann !
Lovely staff, comfy room. Room 10 again, loo still not fixed !
Nice food, and excellent value at £45 b&b . A nice get away in beautiful North Essex , nice choice of ales despite pub being Greene king. Who would stay in a travel lodge.

We stayed overnight in one of the rooms in the rear building to the hotel. The bathroom needs a thorough clean and the mould in the bedroom window needs urgent attention. Such a pity that a couple of hours scrubbing and cleaning was amiss. Otherwise we enjoyed our evening here and our meals in the bar were tasty and the staff very helpful and friendly. Breakfast was good and the lady on duty very efficient. We found that we had a good value overnight stay.
The village is quirky and lots to wander about and see.

Cannot fault the staff - super friendly & helpful but totally let down by the standard of the rooms. Bathroom was old, lime scaly, mouldy, terrible shower no toilteries apart from hand wash - no hairdryer either!

Room was fairly pleasant apart from the stretch of mould across the entire window wall. Bed was clean, comfy but creaked at every turn. The beautiful sash windows not double glazed and as my room was overlooking the street it was very noisy.

Kettle was v furry & full of dust, tea cups were stained & the TV remote was so sticky I hardly dare touch it...

Old, dated & shabby I could deal with for £40 a night inc breakfast but there is no excuse for the poor standards of cleaning.

We as a group of four ex colleagues booked a night at the Swan at Thaxted for early March as a reunion having spent the better part of three months staying there in 2011. Our booking was made on 29th January but we have just been informed on 19th February that they are overbooked and we have no rooms. There is no explanation and no apology but it's not hard to guess that they had a request for a longer stay so simply cancelled us. Be warned if you book with the Swan through Olde English Inns that your booking may be cancelled at any stage and your plans ruined. I've been staying in another of their chain the Feathers at Wadesmill a couple of times a week for the last 9 months but Olde English will get no more business from me. Appalling behaviour.

We visited the Swan with a few friends for lunch and had high hopes with it being a Greene King managed house having visited some excellent Greene King sites around Bury St Edmonds. The food was Ok but very average, service was also average but it would have been nice to have a check back, and the beer wasn't great. Maybe I went on a bad day so will try again in a few weeks time.
