“NOT the Best Ibis”
Reviewed 2 August 2014

Adequate - But Not the best Ibis I have stayed at.
As always with Ibis the rooms are clean, spacious & comfortable with adequate facilities and a good shower & bathroom. Checking-in was very slow as only one person was manning a busy Reception, but he was very pleasant & helpful. Unfortunately I can't recommend the restaurant, very slow service, despite not being busy, & the pizza, when it arrived, was still half frozen..!

Room Tip: If you like to open a window overnight - request a room that doesn't overlook the main road.

I’ve got an hour spare to write this review having just been informed by the girl behind the bar that meals aren’t served before 6.00pm (it’s now 5), despite the ‘Around the World’ restaurant menu located in each room clearly stating at the bottom of page 3 “Menu is available 12 noon to 10pm”. Am I missing something here?!! Not the best of starts as I’m b****y starving after the 130 miles’ journey down from Leicester. Still, that’s three minutes just been killed - only another 57 to go.

First off, then, parking up – no problem whatsoever, plenty of spaces although I did arrive just after mid-afternoon. I would imagine it to be a completely different story for those checking in during the evening as parking spaces could be limited.

Check-in itself was pretty straight forward, the simple A4 registration form completed in a couple of minutes – aided by a smiling face and courteous manner from the girl behind the reception desk. Top marks.

The room is accessed by keycard – simple and no fuss with getting inside.

Anyone who can find substantial complaint about the standard Ibis bedroom, particularly if only using it for an overnight stop-off, needs their head examining. I simply don't understand the poor reviews I've read on Trip Advisor. While basic, Room 7 (ground floor) was nonetheless spacious enough to move around in, containing the usual facilities such as LED TV, hairdryer, wardrobe with hanging space and shelves, small couch, tea/coffee-making equipment (no biscuits though! “Hah, see, told you Ibis is substandard” I hear one or two moaners gleefully informing me. Yawn, yawn.), loads of electrical sockets for re-charging whatever equipment you carry, and a workbench type table by the window for computing upon (or whatever else you might like to use it for). Found the seat a wee bit hard when sat at the table – thought I’d slip that one in quickly before the complaining brigade start up again.

(Just another 27 minutes to go ‘til food!).

The modular shower/WC pod is just like Dr Who’s Tardis – looks small from the outside but you’ll find it’s large within. Spotlessly clean as well. Towels, soap dispenser and shaver socket as standard. Instant hot water on demand and the power-shower is excellent. But no, I didn’t find evidence of any mould, cracked floor tile, missing ceiling panel, dead crane fly or whatever else some reviewers take great sadistic pleasure in seeking out – sorry to disappoint the complainers out there.

The twin beds were each provided with clean, fresh linen and pillow (spare one provided in the wardrobe – not that I was going to sleep there, you understand), the mattress a case of personal taste (there again, I suppose everything else is!).

Free WiFi access – easy to connect throughout the hotel.

Noise not an issue whatsoever.

Good location close to the Queen Elizabeth II bridge on the M25 i.e. easy access to London, Dover crossing, south coast etc.

Anyway, must stop there – it’s 6pm and time to eat. Unless, of course, we’re running on Ibis bar time in which case I have another hour to wait.

UPDATE: Just got back from a jaunt to the bar where I ordered the ‘Signature Dish’ – Cajun chicken pocket (Cajun chicken and pitta bread served with a mixed light leaf salad and tzatziki sauce). In my opinion, this is the biggest waste of £6.95 I’ve suffered in a long time. Four bits of chicken, a mini-pitta, small bowl of salad, and some sauce. In the main, the meat was dry to the degree the edges of each piece was crunchy. Asked by the staff member how I found my meal, I hadn’t the heart to inform her it was dreadful (I know, I know, I’m a coward. But I found I just couldn’t tell her the truth as she’d made such an effort in serving me).

Wonder how I would have found the £16.95 10oz rump steak, £9.95 fish and chips, £10.95 half-chicken (with chips), £6.25 tuna melt baguette or £9.95 hamburger? And £2.00 for a 330ml Coca-Cola, I think I’ll eat out at McD’s next time.

(There, see, I did have a moan after all – happy now?!!).

(I've awarded four stars despite the food issue as this could have been just one of those things. Giving this review just three stars 'average' isn't, in my opinion anyway, a true reflection of the overall experience. 'Good' is more like it).

Room Tip: Room 7 ground floor - easy access, pleasant spacious-enough room, noise not a problem.

Stayed for 4 nights. First impressions of the room was that the bathroom REALLY stank of sewerage. Not nice when you wake up. The bed was really comfortable though.
The food was OK but beware if they haven't got it, they will change the dish! I had this twice out of the four nights.

went to check out and the guy could not work the system. I have tried in vein to get a VAT receipt for the hotel stay and the lottery food! I have spoken to the hotel at least about 4 times, sent 5 emails and yet I still don't have a receipt. absolutely disgusting customer service. I have not started procedures to make a high level complaint and its is unlikely I will stay at an IBIS again.

So if you chose this hotel mostly its fine but take a peg along for your nose incase you experience the same pong

Room Tip: if you chose this hotel its mostly OK but now you may need to take along a peg for you nose to blank...

Check in not conducted with the confident, guest-friendly approach I would expect at an Accor hotel. Not helped by hotel's reservation system not showing same amount to pay as Accor's booking system. Morning staff were much better.
Room clean but decor & fittings rather tired (other than bathroom unit which was newish. Hotel is right next to Queen Elizabeth Bridge but double window provides effective noise insulation - the cooler unit worked so this was fine.
Wifi worked fine.

For the price of £ 45 per night it's very good value, the room was plenty big enough & bed very comfortable. Didn't hear any road noise & had good nights sleep. Staff friendly & breakfast good. Only downside was another guest being a total prat but girl on reception kept control & called police. Will recommend to friends & stay again
